It says once opened keep refrigerated and use within 4 weeks. Jar from Sainsbury’s. Probably been open 2 months. Safe or bin?

Mine’s been in the fridge for about two years. I’d still use it.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 25/05/2024 13:36

Unless it has mould on it, we’d keep using it.

Janek · 25/05/2024 13:37

Mustard lasts till the jar is empty. This could be decades!

Me too. Never occurred to me to look at sell by date 🤦‍♀️

Noshferatu · 25/05/2024 13:38

Completely safe after several years in my view 😀nothing seems to be able to attack mustard
mine has been a bit crusty before but I stir it in if it smells good still

Redshoeblueshoe · 25/05/2024 13:39

I have never put mine in the fridge and it wouldn't occur to me to look at the expiry date.

ViscountessMelbourne · 25/05/2024 13:40

I think after a decade it might lose some of its bite. 4 weeks is utter nonsense. I'd actually complain to Sainsbury's on the grounds that they're encouraging food waste.

SwedishEdith · 25/05/2024 13:42

Isn't it full of vinegar? It doesn't go off.

Pootlepins · 25/05/2024 13:44

Unless it’s got mould growing on it, I would continue to use it.

When I was a kid, 70s, it didn’t even go in the fridge, just brought out every Xmas and stirred 😄

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 25/05/2024 13:47

Until you've finished it, obviously 😀

Notquitethere60 · 25/05/2024 13:48

That’s just a ploy to get you to buy more. I ate home made jam from 2011 this week. I’m still alive. Not kept in the fridge either!

TooManyNiblings · 25/05/2024 13:49

Mine expired in 2021, so it's probably been open in the fridge for about 4 years! I just give it a good stir before I use it.

Teamarugula · 25/05/2024 13:50

Mustard lasts indefinitely as far as I’m concerned. I have multiple jars (different types) in the fridge all of which have been open at least a year and all of them are fine. Who can eat a jar of mustard in 4 weeks?!

DildoHarding · 25/05/2024 13:50

I ate chutney I made in 2004 yesterday. Still here :)

I have to agree. Mustard would survive the apocalypse. Its ridiculous these guidelines even exist..

AdoraBell · 25/05/2024 13:51

I have idea what the use by date is on mine, it’s been open for a long time and it’s still fine <whispers> in the cupboard.

BCBird · 25/05/2024 13:52

I bin most things out of date, but would never bin the best mustard that is Dijon.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/05/2024 13:52

A decade or until I move house Grin

I've replaced it only when I've moved house in last 20 years, so maybe 3 times.

Crispchops · 25/05/2024 13:55

The rim of the jar looks like this. Is it mould? I think some must have accidentally been on the lid last time we closed it

This it really doesn’t go off

GentlemanJohnny · 25/05/2024 14:32

We keep ours in the larder.

Never thought to put it in the fridge.

None has ever gone off on us or gome moldy.

Fraaahnces · 25/05/2024 14:34

If you have to chip it out with a chisel it’s time to get a new one.

Is it inside the lid as well? If it’s just on the jar I’d peel/scrape that off and continue using it tbh!

flairyfairy · 25/05/2024 19:47

Mustard goes in the fridge?

Kitkat1523 · 25/05/2024 19:47

Use it til it runs out
