Sensible DH saw something spooky

Recently we went to visit an old jail.
In the reception area DH was laughing and talking to the man on the desk.
All good advised to go through the door into an annex and read lots of information to help us understand and make the most of the tour. There was only us in that part.
Go through the door into the annex which was empty and DH started to feel down.
Read the info and started to the next room DH started to get upset.
After 3 more rooms we had to leave as DH was crying.

Outside the man on the desk told us that a séance had been performed 3 nights before. DH wouldn't say much.
It was nearly 5 hours later DH felt comfortable to say that there was a man following us which made him worried. The way he described the man was that he was dressed in tatty clothes and had something around his legs. He said he was getting upset because of the sight of this poor man.
There is a lot more but he said that he couldn't tell me anymore as he thinks I'd not believe him.

DH is sensible, not prone to exaggerate and always says it is rubbish people seeing things.

It’s good then that he’s been shown there’s more in this world that he / we don’t understand.

I never really get how anyone can disbelieve things, we as a human race know so little of the world / universe around us. Hopefully now he’ll be more open minded.

Mindblownawaybyfog · 24/05/2024 10:15

Was it Tipperary jail op? We went there and it was quite chilling...

ThreeDimensional · 24/05/2024 10:18

That is spooky! Interesting, though.

Oh that sounds scary. Are you sure he’s well/healthy? Getting enough sleep, enough food etc?

some people are easily influenced by suggestion and if you are a bit run down, more likely, but he could have seen something.

how did you feel there?

if it’s not a one off, make him go to the doctor before you assume woo, it might be woo, but also could be he’s unwell. (Trying to be rational when I’ve also had similar feelings although not seen anything in some places)

HappyAutumnFields · 24/05/2024 10:26

A grown man weeping his way around a tourist venue believing he is being pursued by a ghost doesn’t sound at all ‘sensible’.

OhHelloMiss · 24/05/2024 10:33

I work in an old Victorian jail

Hanging a used to take place and the original debtor and family cells are all still there

It's allegedly haunted but I happily patrol the landings in the dark on night shift. I would love to see a ghost

TakeOnFlea · 24/05/2024 10:47

Well after years working in an allegedly haunted jail that is now a tourist attraction (and seeing fuck all there) I would probably suggest your husband gets a check up or something.

Weeping around a tourist attraction to the point of having to leave but managing to stop for a chinwag about a seance on the way out is simply, fucking bonkers

Mydustymonstera · 24/05/2024 10:48

How old is DH? I’d get him to the GP asap. UTI can cause some temporary cognitive changes in older males.
or just a full check up. That’s a bit worrying.

Mydustymonstera · 24/05/2024 10:49

you say ‘recently’ honestly I would not let this drift. Unless u r trolling us… but it could be all kinds of worrying health conditions.

Yes, the switch from a distressed and weeping DH being pursued by a phantom prisoner to having a friendly chat about séances with the guy on the desk on the way out seems a bit much.

There's a jail which opened in the 1820s now run as a tourist attraction near here, and they have a technological ghost projected onto a corridor dead end -- the effect is quite unnerving if you see it out of the corner of your eye.

Listengold · 24/05/2024 11:19

If I hadn't seen how DH reacted I'd have thought what an idiot.
It was a though going through that doorway was as a switch had been turned on.
And off coming out.
He is fit and quite well.
Reading the reviews on this jail others have spoken about their feelings going in.
Something that will not be explained.

Is it Kilmainham jail in Dublin?

AliceOlive · 24/05/2024 11:27

I had a similar experience once. We popped in a small museum on a military base unplanned. I didn’t know it had been been used as a prison. I had zero historical context so no reason to conjure up the sadness and despair I felt in there. It was like I heard men’s voices telling me to get out. My husband and step son felt nothing. I said nothing and just walked out, explained why later.

TakeOnFlea · 24/05/2024 11:30

Which jail was it?

HoHoHoliday · 24/05/2024 11:31

Was he crying because he was scared of this man following you? I've heard of people being overcome with emotion when they are in a place that has a lot of negative energy, which I imagine an old jail has. But it's surprising that he was so scared of the presence of a man that he was crying, yet didn't say anything to you such as 'can you see that man over there' and happily chatted on the way out, when he was presumably only metres away from where this 'man' was. I'd also suggest he gets himself a check-up.

Blahblahblabbaba1 · 24/05/2024 11:34

Which jail did you visit?

We visited one in Dublin. I didn't see anything but I definitely felt something...certain areas gave a really strange/cold/sinister vibe. Spooky!

Fulshaw · 24/05/2024 11:37

I’d suggest he gets himself checked out. This is not normal behaviour, particularly as you say he’s usually quite sensible.

Listengold · 24/05/2024 11:40

He wasn't scared of the man it was the distress he felt about him.
He told me that rationally he knew the man wasn't real.

This was Beaumaries jail.

Of course it can be explained, unless you're wedded to a supernatural 'explanation'. I once had a horrible feeling of oppression in the Old Operating Theatre in London, to the point where I passed out, crashed to the floor and woke up outside with a first aider. I wasn't being sensitive to the lingering spirits of the long dead, it was simply the architecture of the space, which has high tiers of viewing galleries and feels very enclosed and claustrophobia-inducing.

Some spaces will create a feeling of panic or oppression just by the height of the ceiling or the angle of the walls, or the lighting, and 19thc jails are obviously designed to be punitive in aspect.

Arlanymor · 24/05/2024 11:42

If he’s back to his usual self then I don’t think there is anything sinister going on with his mental health; certain places can invoke certain feelings in people and given your location it’s not entirely surprising, unlike it would be if it was in the middle of Tesco’s fruit and veg aisle on a Saturday morning (although the way some shoppers behave it is enough to make you want to weep).

My ex-husband got ‘scratched’ by a ‘poltergeist’ in Edinburgh. It was something we looked up online afterwards and a fair few other people had had some strange experiences in the same place. Plus my ex-husband was a cheating arsehole, so to be honest the poltergeist did me a bit of a favour there really… cheers spook!

Allthehorsesintheworld · 24/05/2024 11:43

Do you mean Beaumaris Gaol, Anglesey ?
I get cold spots in some places, have seen people who weren’t physically there but have never felt upset by them. Hope your DH is ok.

ginasevern · 24/05/2024 11:45

I've never understood why people want to visit places of immeasurable human suffering for entertainment and a cheap thrill. Unless of course the OP was doing historic research?

Because its fascinating. Because if people didn't visit, it would be turned into housing and forgotten.

PalePurplePumpkin · 24/05/2024 11:50

DH is sensible, not prone to exaggerate and always says it is rubbish people seeing things.

So he needs urgent psychiatric help by the sound of it.

Please get him to a doctor ASAP.

Blahblahblabbaba1 · 24/05/2024 11:52

No wonder the NHS is on its knees. One strange episode doesn't make it an urgent matter for a doctor.
