I know I was there. It's still immature. Also for all the hope 1997 gave us, where did we end up?

Better at the end it than we are now after 14 years of tories…
At least we had an NHS, clean water in rivers and beaches and drinking water at the tap.
And many many other things that feel like a dream just now 😢😢

Because they always run us into near bankruptcy...

Again........the Labour government was not responsible for the 2008 recession. The recession was caused by the housing bubble bursting in the US which led to subsequent financial crises in other countries.

Are you impressed with the way the current Tory party has handled the economy then @JosiePosey ? Because to me it looks like a disaster of epic proportions and we are all paying the price of that.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 22/05/2024 21:38

Can we all just agree they're all lying bastards who promise the earth and deliver nothing, whatever colour they brandish

My dad was made redundant twice and not able to access benefits that would support a family of 4 including a dc at uni. £94 a fortnight simply wasn’t enough. My family were the poorest they’d ever been so I remember it well. We were sold a dream but it didn’t come up fruition. The Labour Party took out more loans than they could afford but sure. If it was so great why didn’t the electorate keep them in power?

I personally think that the answer to this is that the electorate tend to get fed up with any government after a certain amount of time. For different reasons though.

And the Tories ….
Have let people die, purposefully (you remember the ‘let them die’ from Sunak right?)
Gave huge amount if money away to their rich friends - PPE scandal only being one if the ‘sore points’ re contracts
People saw their real wages stagnated since 2010 when the richest, including Sunak, increased their wealth by several millions.

But yay … it’s so much better than Labour

The current government has apparently borrowed more than the last one.

The problem comes when you believe the propaganda about Tories being careful with our economy.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/05/2024 21:41

National debt is higher now than EVER before as they gave all the money to their mates 🤷‍♀️

So it's not true than Labour spend money - the Tories have spent trillions !

It wasn’t for my family so I’m coming from my own experience. They’re all egotistical and totally out of touch with reality. Happy to be proven wrong. Didn’t the last Labour government end with a financial disaster? Am I miss remembering?

There was a global financial crisis, which we were recovering well from until the Tories decided that crippling the economy with a policy of austerity was a better option.

And before somebody accuses me of being a Labour supporter, I did vote Tory in 2010. It was a mistake and one I’m not planning on repeating. I’ve never voted Labour.

No, I'm not.

I believe utilities and essentials like transport and internet should be re/nationalised, and we should have an NHS, but I also think people shouldn't be and shouldn't expect to be subsidised and supported by the state. Other peoples kids and families are not my problem to support, I'd rather keep more of my own hard earned money in my own pocket 🤷‍♀️

Agreed. I can't believe someone couldn't stop it.

why should it be stopped? Anyone else playing anywhere else at that volume would have a whole long process to go through before having their equipment confiscated. Why should it be any different if the person being annoyed is a tory rich boy?

Benefits should be a stopgap, not a lifestyle, disability in exception.

I really hope Keir will reverse his own pension protection legislation that he solely benefits from, so that he does not continue to benefit from special tax privileges that everyone else does not receive.

I can't agree to that @MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira because I have lived through various governments and they are not all the same. I ask regularly on here what this Conservatives government had done for us ordinary people and rarely get an answer.

Labour governments’ achievements - Shrewsbury Labour

Between 1997 and 2010 Labour was continuously in government. Here are Labour’s top 50 achievements during those years. Longest period of sustained low inflation since the 60s. Low mortgage rates. Introduced the National Minimum Wage and raised it to £5...

Sir Keir Starmer says he would scrap his own pension tax perk

The Labour leader says he would include himself in plans to reverse high earner tax breaks.

You seriously think he cared? He knows Labour are going to win and doesn't care if they do, and he's probably already booked his flights to California.

If it upset or annoyed anyone it will those, like a previous poster's dad, whose lives got worse not better.

BeaRF75 · 22/05/2024 22:20

You do know that a change of domestic Government will make very little difference to anyone's lives, don't you? Because 1) the two main UK parties are very similar and particularly 2) the things that most impact us are global issues eg climate change, Russia/Ukraine war, US elections.
I mean, yes, it's our civic duty to vote, but I think it's hilarious that people seem to think it will suddenly become a land of milk and honey.

LadyHavelockVetinari · 22/05/2024 22:20

YouJustDoYou · 22/05/2024 18:33

I know, it's so awful of them to pay almost half their wages in tax. Terrible people.

This is just silly. You know that people who earn as little as £43k / £50k also pay almost half their earnings in taxes?

What is so special about the rich, in your opinion? Perhaps it's the constant tax evasion the rich are famous for that makes you so impressed when some of them actually pay their damn taxes like the rest of us.

Thank you, some common sense. I too have lived through various governments.

The ‘they’re all the same’ sound bite is untrue and a total cop out.

DorisDoesDoncaster · 22/05/2024 22:31

Why did he push this legislation through in the first place and why has he not been lobbying to have it reversed already?

Won’t be voting for either of the two useless main parties - they’re both full of snouts in the trough types of self-serving pigs, happy to take their tax payer funded salaries and gold plated pensions.

Would vote for any party that sets MPs’ level of pay at the national average wage and the national average pension. And scrap all of those ‘office’ perks and tax free allowances, such as paying their family generously to do ‘admin’.

Nobody is expecting a land of milk and honey.
We just know we deserve better than we are getting now.

The two main parties are not very similar. Look at what Labour achieved last time they were in power then compare to what the Conservatives have achieved. Look in particular how ordinary people in this country benefit or lose under both parties.

Politics is our only way to interact with the rest of the world on issues such as conflict and climate change.

No, no they don’t. The more people earn the more tax they pay and vice versa. As demonstrated by these examples…

Do you see the difference in income tax paid between 46,000 and 105,000?

And the 46,000 pay nowhere near 50% tax 🙄

House prices increased by ca. 150% between 1997 and 2010 under Labour. They introduced tuition fees which have royally lined the pockets of the universities’ endowment funds and saddled our children with ridiculous levels of debt that the Tories have only added to.

The incumbents have completely screwed the rental market by making landlords pay tax on losses, and people wonder why they are in bidding wars/losing their homes, all to fund more taxes.

These idiots want us plebs to depend on the state so that they can get or stay in power in order to feather their own nests.

Have you ever heard of a poor retired former MP living on the breadline?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 22/05/2024 22:58

We deserve a government who don't actually despise us, so at least we'll get that, whatever else their shortcomings. It's be a nice change.

I appreciate tax brackets are slightly different across countries but compare someone who earns 50,000 to someone who earns double at 100,000.

The higher earner pays 2,620 in tax, taxes home 5,713. So they're paying just over 30% in taxes. Someone who earns 50,000 takes home 3300, pays 1000 in taxes, so 23%. So the person who earns double pays an extra 7%. It's not exactly the rich sacrificing so much more than the rest of us plebs is it.

Edit : I'm a fool who attached the wrong screenshot, the text refers to 50k, not 46k. Don't know how to change it!
