URGENT - DOG ATTACKED PARTNER **Please read OP's latest updates** [edited by MNHQ]

Hi all, my 6yo JRT has attacked my partner twice this morning. He has recently developed some territorial aggression, and we have to 'coax' him away from his bed each morning. This morning was as normal, but he wouldn't come so we just left him. My partner went to get milk, about 2m away from him, and the dog lunged and has bitten his hand fairly badly. We managed to lock him away whilst we sorted things, and have since boarded a section of the kitchen away so he can get outside but also can't get to us.
Anytime we enter the kitchen he viciously barks. I have a 4yo at home, so this isn't something I can risk.
He has since bitten my partner again when we went to open the back door for him (by leaning over the barrier we've created) and it's really bad - blood everywhere and he is now in a&e.
I cannnot get near the dog. How do I get him to a point where I can get him checked out - or as I'm probably denying to myself, put to sleep..?
I'm in absolute bits - I just need advice please urgently.

To note - I can't get a vet to come to him, I have already called around

  • [Note from MNHQ: We've already edited the title to ask people to read the OP's updates before responding (just click on the See All tab). As that doesn't seem to have worked, we feel the need to explain here in the opening post that the OP's dog has been put to sleep by now as he was found to be suffering from a brain tumour. The OP is obviously in pieces about this so please be sensitive when responding.]

Oh this is the BEST update! Pickle is a beaut! I 💙 pointy dogs. Well done for rescuing him... 💐

sonjadog · 04/05/2025 18:20

Great news! I wish you all and Pickle much fun and joy together!

PoodlesRUs · 04/05/2025 18:22

What a marvellous update, OP ❤

Wexone · 04/05/2025 18:36

Ah amazing news. love the fact its a greyhound- they are a fabulous dog amazing pet. 👏 congrats

FlangeBoil · 04/05/2025 18:42

Thanks all! He’s the sweetest old boy I’ve ever come across. He just wants a cuddle & somewhere comfy to snooze, nothing more. DD has been out today and picked out some treats and toys for him and has ‘set them up’ as she says in his new bedroom. She’s super excited!

He's beautiful!! 🤩

FlangeBoil · 04/05/2025 19:33

He’s stunning. This will make absolutely no sense to anyone, but we didn’t get a ‘senior’ years era with Donut, so we’d like to think that having Pickle in his senior years will help heal the part of us that wishes we saw Donut through that. We could never replace Donut, we’d never try, but it felt like he missed out on so much, and there are so many dogs living their twilight years out in kennels that it really seemed like a positive thing to do after having Donut taken so soon.

I love your logic about twilight years. It absolutely makes sense! I read your previous post a s you showed true and decent ddog ownership skills in doing best by everyone..
Enjoy your Pickle!

Atethehalloweenchocs · 04/05/2025 20:05

I remember your post, OP, and am so glad for you. Senior dogs are great to take it, they are so grateful and can be so loving - how lovely you can have time and space with him.

Hi all, FlangeBoil here under a new name. For anyone still following, we have a little update. It’s been almost a year since we lost Donut and the house has seemed so quiet and we have absolutely longed for a dog since then however the idea of a puppy again isn’t something we fancy right now. So, we’ve decided to adopt! Our adopted greyhound, Pickle, will be joining us on Tuesday after a successful meet with DD and a good few meets with DP and I. He’s 9.5 years old, an ex race dog and has a few medical issues that he needs ongoing treatment for, all of which means he’s been in the rescue centre for a long time. We’ve done the research, considered the cost and are so excited to welcome him into the home so that he can enjoy his twilight years doing what he does best - snacking and snoozing on the sofa.

Everyone meet Pickle!

This is the loveliest news. Greyhounds are fantastic family dogs, love snoozes, snuggles, and sniffy-strolls. I just hope you have a big sofa……

So happy for Pickle x

XenoBitch · 04/05/2025 20:54

Greyhounds are the best! Enjoy your new long boi!

EdithStourton · 04/05/2025 21:07

Lovely news, OP. Wishing you many happy years with Pickle.

Nawwww that's so beautiful! You will be wonderful owners for Pickle. ❤️

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/05/2025 04:39

Awwwwww Pickle, you've landed on your paws now! :D

ThankYouAgainAgain · 05/05/2025 06:43

That's really lovely. Thank you for the update. :-)

Glittertwins · 05/05/2025 07:13

Ooh, the couch potato of the dog world, ex racers are fantastic. Enjoy your new home Pickle!

FlangeBoil · 05/05/2025 07:39

Thanks everyone. Luckily we have 2 huge sofas and a big pouffe thingy so plenty of room for him to relax. I’m creating an office in the living room too so I can work downstairs and keep him company too. We’ve also sorted him his own bedroom so he has his own space when he needs it.

Tomorrow is the day!

So pleased for you OP. Pickles is so cute 😍 (tell him I said handsome). I've just looked in the mirror and I seem to be developing a strange green tinge 🤔

VoluptuaSneezelips · 05/05/2025 14:15

Thankyou for the updates OP. What a handsome old boy Pickle is and he shares the name with my 24yr old daughter. Well her's is a nicknames because she was such an ickle pickle as a baby.
Love the reasoning behind your choice of a senior dog, lovely way to honour Donut and im sure Pickle will bring you as much love and joy as he will be feeling towards you his forever family.

EmeraldDreams73 · 05/05/2025 18:16

What a lovely update! I'm so glad you're adopting Pickle, he's adorable x

FlangeBoil · 05/05/2025 19:41

Thanks all - we are all set for his arrival tomorrow! I will update when I can, I’ve cleared my morning at work so I can be ready for him with treats 🥹

Ime sighthounds are known for having bad teeth. Can be a costly business!! (£800 for 10 teeth out - old rescue lurcher ) Make sure carrots figure in his treat selection!!.

Yep, this!

A regular teeth clean at a groomers is not much. About £40 every few months. Is the dog equivalent of a hygienist, and they can spot troublesome teeth too.

Dried chicken feet are great for keeping teeth clean if your new hound does not like carrots.

FlangeBoil · 06/05/2025 06:54

Thanks both - he had a lot of dental work back in Feb and had 17 teeth out (poor lad) so hopefully we can just keep on top of keeping his remaining teeth clean and healthy!
