What one do you choose?

I'm just curious.

For me it's always a sprinkle doughnut Grin I never really explore other options.

Morrisons do a Black Forest chocolate muffin. Absolutely incredible.

Also, @Persipan where’s your apple danish recipe from?

pizzaHeart · 21/05/2024 22:35

Yorkshire curd tart, cinnamon bun, eclair, cheesecake, cream cake….

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 21/05/2024 22:35

I love a Lemon Split Bun but it might be a Leicester thing. Made famous in the area by Bruccianis coffee shop and thankfully replicated by the replacement that took its place when they sadly closed down.

Pleeeeeaaaaase share the link to the coconut!

Haven't had London cheesecake since the 70s and would love to have a go at making a gluten free one.

https://chelmsfordwholefoods.co.uk/product/thread-coconut/ and actually it turns out you can buy less than a kilo.

I am googling some of these that I haven't heard of and they look delicious.

I love Bavarian slices @TheNortherner but didn't actually know that's what they were called! Quite difficult to eat without all the cream oozing out but delicious.

Bavarian slices are easiest to eat sideways. Ask me how I know :)

blackforest beignet, fortitude bakehouse is a couple of minutes from my office, I was once lucky enough to get one and oh my god it was fucking divine!
Actually everything I’ve ever had from there has been very good.

I used to go here all the time and then it went viral and you had to queue round the corner for an hour every lunch time. And the bikes! Where are they coming from?!

I used to get their special danish, whatever it was. The banana one was always the best. The beignets never caught my eye. Lovely danishes consistently but I’d always advise the tourists that the sandwiches at the Brunswick were better, cheaper and you didn’t have to wait 28 working days to buy one 😂

@Persipan @wutheringkites I'd also forgotten London cheesecake exists! Are they filled with something? I can't remember. I had them a lot as a child.

There's a bit of jam, and also frangipane.

School lunch - gypsy tart and half an apple with the vague hope the damage your poor teeth would be slightly mitigated.....

Is that why we were given half a (slightly bruised & sour) golden delicious?
Also grew up in Kent :)

Fudge donut from Fisher & Donaldsons.

An excellent choice. I'm also partial to one from Baynes.

Roseinbloom20 · 21/05/2024 22:48

Tottenham cake, every time 🤤 (which is ironic because I support Arsenal 🙈)

ThePoshUns · 21/05/2024 22:48

Ice slice

medianewbie · 21/05/2024 22:49

An M&S apple turnover if still warm is lovely.
I remember the slabs of warm Bread pudding & the lardy cake & the rum babas from a particular bakery of my childhood in Whistable. My best friend & I used to take our pocket money there on a Saturday morning. Happy days.

Honestly pretty much from my head but the gist is that you don't actually need to make danish pastry dough for that sort of 'danish', because clearly bakeries don't. So I just make a sweet bread dough like this: https://www.bakingobsession.com/2008/03/25/sweet-dough-bread/ and then at the appropriate moment, fold big soft rectangles of it over an apple compote filling. And then slap on loads of white icing once they're baked and cooled. And preferably toasted flaked almonds on top.

A pineapple cake from Murray's bakery

Ineedaholidayyyy · 21/05/2024 22:54

Bavarian/vanilla slice if its from somewhere like Greggs.

If its a coffee shop/cafe , lemon drizzle!

CrushingOnRubies · 21/05/2024 22:54

A strawberry Mille feuille type thing for me please

Turmerictolly · 21/05/2024 22:54

We have a traditional bakers and I'll get a fresh cream slice or a jam donut. Now they've started doing a freshly made Biscoff cheesecake which is a million calories but I love it.

Several posh bakeries nearby so the I'll spend extortionate amounts on a lime and pistachio cake or a financier, or a fancy fruit polenta cake. Ottolenghi cakes are my favourites.

Same! Custard slice or custard tart for me...or if I'm back home, a Manchester Tart 😍

I'm from Manchester but have only even Manchester Tart as afters at school dinners eons ago!

VenusClapTrap · 21/05/2024 23:01

I’ve traditionally been a pain au raisin girl, but have recently discovered cardamom buns so they are my current choice.

If I’m in Betty’s though, it’s a Fat Rascal.

onwardandupwards · 21/05/2024 23:03

A bread pudding slice

ohsoverrrrytired · 21/05/2024 23:06

My bakery does the most amazing orange curd danish slathered in glaze icing ... I'm drooling just thinking about it! Unfortunately it's a seasonal item so it's not avaible all year round (maybe not such a bad thing!)

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 21/05/2024 23:06

Mille Feuille or a custard slice are my faves.
However, when I was a kid it was always jam doughnuts, my uncle was a baker and when we would visit he would bring us freshly baked doughnuts for breakfast (after his night shift baking) and he would make sure he'd put in an extra squirt of jam for us. We were allowed a second if we didn't lick our lips! My uncle passed away recently and have been promising myself I will buy some jam doughnuts - this thread has prompted me - so going to do that this weekend - any recommendations for best jam doughnuts (it's been a while) happily received....

thaegumathteth · 21/05/2024 23:12

A japanoise cake but I've only ever seen them in one bakery in Aviemore. They're like two macaron meringues together with coconut and 'stuff'.

Otherwise either an empire biscuit or a plain sponge
