People in the supermarket with ONLY meat and vegetables in their trolley

I feel like they are higher beings. Like elves maybe. Nothing processed. Just 2 duck breasts and some bok choi and spring onions, and a packet of raw almonds. Maybe a jar of smoked paprika.

I try and feed us all healthily and I mostly think I do okay until I'm lining up next to one of these elves and I have a packet of hobnobs, and a box of cornflakes, and a tin of flavoured tuna for DS's sandwiches, and bread, of course, and a box of frozen breaded fish fillets because there's no time to cook on Wednesdays, and some of that flavoured porridge as a treat so DD will get up early without complaining, and a bag of crisps for me (I deserve a treat), and a plastic tub of spreadable Olivio for lunchboxes, ready made falafel and a squirty aioli because it was on offer, and ... and...

I like to imagine that somewhere, in another life, I am buying one whole fish and an entire head of purple cabbage. Some persimmons. Coriander, silverbeet, rabbit kidneys...

🤣

Pootlepins · 21/05/2024 07:52

This is me, apart from fish not meat.

I like the thought that maybe I am an Elf 🧝‍♀️

But then to be fair, it’s only me I cook for these days, can’t say I was quite as virtuous when my kids were your young and we weren’t getting in till gone 6 at night!

junebirthdaygirl · 21/05/2024 07:53

Oh this is me every time. Trolley nearly full and l get home and realise l have 2 proper dinners for the next two days..so what's all that other stuff? And why did l spend so much?

Nah, I bet they have their tins and frozen waffles delivered and they are just picking up the bits they forgot to add to the online order.

reluctantbrit · 21/05/2024 07:55

That can be me on a day where I just buy ingredients for one dinner.

But you may meet me two days later and I have the bags full with everything else because I do the weekly shop.

These people clearly don't have teenage boys at home! Or they would have a trolley full of snacks that the teenage locusts attack as soon as the shopping crosses the front door.

Willmafrockfit · 21/05/2024 07:56

i do eat frozen battered fish
and sausages, are sausages ultra processed?

DatingDinosaur · 21/05/2024 07:58

This could be me. I do one big shop a month for non-perishables like tins and packets and jars then a weekly shop for perishables like meat, veg and fruit.

So if you've caught me on a 'perishables' shop then my trolly will look uber-healthy.

SurpriseSparDay · 21/05/2024 07:59

The mistake you’re making is the shopping in an actual physical shop. It’s far easier to be virtuous via a screen, when you need never look at a packet of crisps.

Mumoftwo1316 · 21/05/2024 08:00

That was me the other day! So exciting, I've discovered how to make my own fish cakes (one of the few healthy-ish things my dd will eat). So the other day I had some fresh fish, eggs, potatoes and dill in my basket, I must have looked like I was about to cook something posh.

(We already had the frozen chips in the freezer, and the ketchup in the fridge. It was not posh lol)

EmpressaurusOfCats · 21/05/2024 08:01

More or less me except I’m veggie, & currently trying out recipes from a new cookbook, so it’s fruit & vegetables, tofu, herbs & spices, tins of beans or lentils.

But the basket doesn’t show takeaways or cakes from the local coffee shop.

And I’m only cooking for me apart from when I host friends, so don’t have anyone else to worry about - if I had to cook for a family I’m certain it would be different.

Nah, I bet they have their tins and frozen waffles delivered and they are just picking up the bits they forgot to add to the online order.

This is what I do. A weekly delivery of processed stuff as it’s easier to pick online, then a weekend shop for meat and veg because I struggle to browse it on the app and I like going in to the shop and picking up random things to get some variety into my diet.

The supermarket shop looks very virtuous but is not representative of my way too processed diet 😂

LittleBearPad · 21/05/2024 08:04

Top-up shops. The rest comes via online shopping - don’t worry OP. They have their own hobnobs at home.

NoSquirrels · 21/05/2024 08:05

These people are not shopping for families.

If I came home with only veg and fish or meat, my DH or teen DC would declare there was absolutely NO FOOD in the house and go to the Co-op for a meal deal.

triballeader · 21/05/2024 08:07

That sounds like my ghastly weekly shop. I look enviously at the ready made wishing I could add them to my shop so for once I did not have to cook from scratch. Thanks to DH and DS allergies it has to be unprocessed to avoid eggs, gluten, nuts, peanuts, milk and anything that swims or crawls in water…….

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 21/05/2024 08:09

You only saw the performance shopping. The actual shopping goes on late at night when not many are around to witness their stealthy trolley of shame with its frozen oven chips, chicken nuggets, large tubs of ice cream and family-sized chocolate bars.

Mushroomwithaview · 21/05/2024 08:10

Hahaha @ performance shopping 😆

Im an elf :)

My trolley is always boring, meat/fish, fruit and veg, dairy, condiments, grains and pulses and household items

But to be fair theres just three older adults at home

Makes shopping a lot quicker, less aisles to go down :)

We arent saints , just budgetary and dietary needs mean cooking from scratch works best for us.

Rainbowshit · 21/05/2024 08:15

Ha ha. This was me the other day in the supermarket. I had bok Choi, sugar snap peas, baby sweetcorn cucumber mint and strawberries in my basket. I did indeed feel very virtuous.

In reality the cucumber, mint and strawberries were garnishes for my pimms and I'd had all the tins and frozen crap delivered in my monthly online shop.

bryceQ · 21/05/2024 08:15

Do you not think some people do just eat low amounts of processed foods? There's so much awareness about it now

Pistachiovillian · 21/05/2024 08:18

This is me most times apart from it is no meat, just tofu and veg BUT;
I'm a vegan currently doing low-carb.
I'm childless
I'm single (well, I live alone but I'm seeing someone)

On the occasions my partner is staying over however, it is the opposite as she eats a lot of junk! Plus beer and prosecco!

Theothername · 21/05/2024 08:20

That was me before a dh and dc. Hobbits and elves shouldn’t inter marry.

Read the OP again. Yes it's about the contents of the trolley, but it's also about a completely different family set up and lifestyle that allows for a completely different way of eating.

Our weekly shop doesn't look too bad OP - then there's the regular top ups because feck it, we need a treat. Grin

Clingfilm · 21/05/2024 08:23

Omg, OP hard relate!
