People in the supermarket with ONLY meat and vegetables in their trolley

I feel like they are higher beings. Like elves maybe. Nothing processed. Just 2 duck breasts and some bok choi and spring onions, and a packet of raw almonds. Maybe a jar of smoked paprika.

I try and feed us all healthily and I mostly think I do okay until I'm lining up next to one of these elves and I have a packet of hobnobs, and a box of cornflakes, and a tin of flavoured tuna for DS's sandwiches, and bread, of course, and a box of frozen breaded fish fillets because there's no time to cook on Wednesdays, and some of that flavoured porridge as a treat so DD will get up early without complaining, and a bag of crisps for me (I deserve a treat), and a plastic tub of spreadable Olivio for lunchboxes, ready made falafel and a squirty aioli because it was on offer, and ... and...

I like to imagine that somewhere, in another life, I am buying one whole fish and an entire head of purple cabbage. Some persimmons. Coriander, silverbeet, rabbit kidneys...

If it was just me and one of my DC our trolley would look like that, we both have a preference for healthy, minimally processed foods. Think olives, salmon, vegetables, nuts, EVOO, greek yoghurt, eggs, cheese and fresh fruit. My other DC is the opposite and wont eat anything that doesn't come in a packet.

Acinonyx2 · 21/05/2024 09:16

OP my trolley is a lot like yours down to the flavoured porridge to get dd to eat breakfast and the bag of crisps. And I actually think we do pretty well and do a lot of cooking from scratch - but not every day and not all snacks. Draw the line at sausages though.

afaloren · 21/05/2024 09:19

I feel like this in the airport when I see someone glamorous with just a tiny bag. Teach me your ways!

Nah, I bet they have their tins and frozen waffles delivered and they are just picking up the bits they forgot to add to the online order.

This is very true.

I did a very healthy shop in my local supermarket/farm shop on Monday and today I have £80 worth of garbage (including 2 sets of 5 for £10 on Haagan Dasz from Ocado!!) arriving.

DancingFerret · 21/05/2024 09:27

That would be my basket, more or less. Fast (or convenient) food for DH and me is an omelette or toast; otherwise I cook from scratch. Eating like that has always been normal for me; growing up, my mum wouldn't buy anything pre-prepared, not even fish fingers. (My guilty pleasure is a fish finger sandwich.)

Bluevelvetsofa · 21/05/2024 09:44

I love fish finger sandwiches. Posh fish fingers though. 🤣

I speculate more about the trolleys with ten loves of bread, five four pint cartons of milk and a cabbage. I assume they must be for a catering establishment of some sort.

FlambeJones · 21/05/2024 09:47

My shopping habits are erratic, I buy fruit, vegetables, tuna, spices and sourdough from M&S.
Things like pasta, rice, couscous, butter, milk, baking ingredients etc from Lidl,
Crisps, snacks, cheese, cottage cheese, protein yogurts and cleaning stuff from Home Bargains.
Meat from the butchers and Fish gets delivered.
Top up shops from wherever I fancy.
I could be anything from a heath elf to a snack munching, cleaning obsessed hobbit depending on where you saw me!

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/05/2024 09:48

We’re downsizing soon to a flat for retirement. City centre, really looking forward to shopping fresh for dinner each day at the butcher, fishmonger, greengrocer, etc. Never had time before, it’s a luxury.

Mrsjayy · 21/05/2024 09:50

We do a monthly big shop the meat and veg are normally hidden under the crisp multipacks and wine I'm sure the healthy trolleys just go elsewhere for their snacks ! 😀

atlaz · 21/05/2024 09:52

My trolley will often look like that, but that's mainly because I'm coeliac and a huge amount of stuff is off limits for me.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/05/2024 09:52

I dream of being one of those people too, OP. But I always let myself down with hobnobs or athlete's foot powder or tampons or a can of Rubicon lychee pop 😔

AhBiscuits · 21/05/2024 09:52

My top up shops are usually just fresh stuff. The main shop has some processed shit. I find it hard to make packed lunches completely UPF free.

Comefromaway · 21/05/2024 09:54

I get that kind of stuff from Home Bargains/B & M as it's much cheaper there. I've got both right next to each other and across the road from Sainsbury's so it's fruit, veg, meat & fish from Sainsbury's and biscuits, crisps & tins from B & M.

TBF, that is exactly what I do. Get the ambient/heavy stuff delivered, but I prefer to choose my own fresh produce.

Alwaystired2023 · 21/05/2024 10:00

Flavoured tuna sounds amazing OP, what flavours can you get ?!

Mrsjayy · 21/05/2024 10:00

Like a pp my top up shop is usually vegetables fruit and milk/Bread so looks better than the full trolly.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/05/2024 10:01

They are probably the MNers who turn up on any diet / weight loss thread and inform the rest of us we aren't trying hard enough and just need to 'eat less and move more'.

Ombadcat · 21/05/2024 10:04

Mine looks like that sometimes as I do two huge stock up shops a month then the in between weeks I only buy the fresh stuff we need.

Today I bought
A chicken
Pine nuts
beetroot
spinach
feta
mushrooms

All the chocolate bars, crisps, biscuits, cereal, plastic bread etc were bought last week

BigFatLiar · 21/05/2024 10:12

We usually have a monthly shop with the non edibles and a weekly shop for food. OH does a weekly meal plan but if either of us changes our minds he'll go get ingredients for a different meal so the basket would be just meat/fish and veg but he sometimes might include chocolate or sweets for me and flowers.

We also top up fruit as it seems to go off so quickly these days.

KohlaParasaurus · 21/05/2024 10:23

The first thing I'd think of was that they didn't have a fridge and only had a single gas ring or camping stove for cooking. Maybe they're having their kitchen replaced, or living in a tiny van.

I'm not that person. In the same situation, there would be a pack of Gu puddings in the basket. And crisps and biscuits and chocolate because we wouldn't want to run out of snacks as well as having no kitchen or being stuck in a van in the rain. And custard doughnuts, because DH is never unhappy if he's got access to a custard doughnut.

Same here.

I nipped into Aldi last night and my basket contained salmon fillets, oat milk, salad and brown rice, but it was really just top up/bits I fancied for dinner.

Tins, snack stuff, crisps, freezer stuff, dog/cat food, etc, etc I get a Sainsbury’s delivery

BurbageBrook · 21/05/2024 10:27

My big shop is a bit like that but then I often cave and buy chocolate and wine from the local corner shop...

MaMarysBigBowl · 21/05/2024 10:30

I saw a woman leaving Lidl this morning with just one pepper?

How do you go in and not buy anything else along the way?!!

lljkk · 21/05/2024 10:39

I can buy just one pepper, lol.
Never noticed veg+meat only purchasers.
Here it's more likely to be booze & fags only.

WhereIsMyLight · 21/05/2024 10:41

That would have been my basket yesterday morning. Milk, cucumber, blueberries, apples and the unprocessed peanut butter. All of it snacks for toddler and because the toddler was with me, I wasn’t messing around finding something for a treat for me. Or pondering what to have for tea that was more exciting than what we already had in.

If you’d seen our weekend shop, you’d have seen the Doritos, cider and ice lollies! It’s just about catching people on a different day.
