People in the supermarket with ONLY meat and vegetables in their trolley

I feel like they are higher beings. Like elves maybe. Nothing processed. Just 2 duck breasts and some bok choi and spring onions, and a packet of raw almonds. Maybe a jar of smoked paprika.

I try and feed us all healthily and I mostly think I do okay until I'm lining up next to one of these elves and I have a packet of hobnobs, and a box of cornflakes, and a tin of flavoured tuna for DS's sandwiches, and bread, of course, and a box of frozen breaded fish fillets because there's no time to cook on Wednesdays, and some of that flavoured porridge as a treat so DD will get up early without complaining, and a bag of crisps for me (I deserve a treat), and a plastic tub of spreadable Olivio for lunchboxes, ready made falafel and a squirty aioli because it was on offer, and ... and...

I like to imagine that somewhere, in another life, I am buying one whole fish and an entire head of purple cabbage. Some persimmons. Coriander, silverbeet, rabbit kidneys...

It's kids...I was like that before having them!

Currently an elf as you describe 🙈 although the occasional bat of chocolate might make it in. Cool everything from scratch, avoid UPF. I'm reliably told it's insufferable and also that I won't find the time to make my own granola after my twins are born, so the bubble is about to burst!

I'm an elf since DC left home. Much easier with just the 2 of us.
And DC do moan when they come home and look in the cupboards.
I think it makes food shopping so much easier as I can miss out most of the supermarket.
I have plenty of time and mental space and enjoy cooking. I couldn't have done it when at the coal face of child rearing

Nah, I bet they have their tins and frozen waffles delivered and they are just picking up the bits they forgot to add to the online order.

Yes that's me, all the junk delivered and I go and pick my fruit and veg and my sourdough loaf. I can't have the bread delivered as a. it doesn't last a week and b. I can't slice bread for toffee so the nice man in the bakery section does it for me if I'm in the shop but not for online orders.

My trolley looks grim. There's no veg/fruit in my trolley because am really lucky to have a decent green grocer nearer than my supermarket.

We look like carb-a-holics. It's pasta/bread/Cereal full

I know it's a lighthearted thread, BUT...

...we humans are primates, and primates eat predominantly natural vegetation, with a small amount of animal.products. This is what our digestive system is designed to process.

For centuries humans have gathered foods from near where they live and eaten them raw or cooked them from scratch. This continues in societies all over the world today, where fresh veg, meat, fish, herbs, spices, dairy products and wholegrains are combined to make delicious meals from scratch..

Here in the UK our giant supermarkets are crammed full of total rubbish "food" (it's not food. It's edible garbage) and it's making us really sick. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, mental health problems etc are through the roof. The knock-on effect on society is massive.

If you were to feed a gorilla hobnobs, flavoured tuna, cornflakes and crisps, it would be considered animal cruelty. But so many of us feed these things to ourselves daily.

So hats off to those choosing to eat real, nourishing, life-affirming fresh produce, which tastes amazing (with the help of a cooking video or two!) and is overall much, much cheaper than processed food.

It's not about being "virtuous", a "higher being", or a "food snob". It's just eating food as humans are designed to eat it, and as people have been doing since the dawn of humankind.

You have made some very good points. In the end, I think cooking from and perhaps growing your own basic ingredients is actually a simple lifestyle. Being in a developed country where we have access to so much choice puts us in a privileged position with first world problems to contend with. I don't think we should consider people food snobs for wanting to live a simple life.

This. I am that shopper, but it’s because I have all the other parts delivered, but have had too many bad experiences with online shop meat and veg, so pick it myself!

I’m an Elf.

I don’t buy frozen fish, ready meals, tinned anything bar tomatoes or beans. Make everything from scratch and eat lots of vegetables, fresh meat and fish etc. No biscuits, cake etc (genuinely don’t have a sweet tooth). Rarely eat bread or cheese.

I admit I am pretty focused on health and keeping my weight at a decent level.

That said, I don’t have kids or a partner to cook for.

Frozen fish is more likely to be fresh than ‘fresh’ fish which can be days/a week old. I saw it on the telly.
