My dad's partner died of cancer a few days ago, he and I were with her when she died, and I've brought him home with me until the funeral (and probably permanently). He's got Alzheimer's and his partner was his carer. He's been looking pained and twisting his shoulder, he said it's just a spot, but I made him show me his back and found this. It looks just like the squamous cell carcinoma he's had removed before, only it's enormous. He's lost weight and is pale and more vague and breathless than usual, but I thought it was just grief Sad

This is really fucking bad, isn't it? He survived stage 4 lymphoma in 2017 and has a heart condition. I have a doctor calling me back from 111, but should I just take him to A&E?

How is everything going @sprigatito ?

ReallyNotTheBestDayEver · 27/06/2024 21:00

@sprigatito just checking in to see how you're all doing?

Vive42 · 28/06/2024 20:48

How are you OP? Hoping the best for you and your DF but also knowing that he’s been very poorly recently. Oh it’s so bloody hard. You want to have hope but the fear and sadness and rushing around to medical this and that is is so overwhelming. I cried non stop for a week when my DM was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Broke me in two.

Incakewetrust · 03/07/2024 21:15

How are you and your dad doing OP?

sprigatito · 03/07/2024 23:27

We are doing ok, thanks for asking ❤️

He has settled down quite a bit, isn't demanding to go home as long as I keep him busy, he's visibly less strained and tired since his back wound has calmed down and started to heal. It still looks pretty gruesome but the nurse who checks it once a week says it's going in the right direction. I only have to pack the wound and change the dressing on Mondays now, then the nurse does it on Thursdays. We've settled into a nice routine of artwork, time in the garden, pottering around the shops and I've started getting him interested in politics again (he's been a passionate socialist all his life).

Still no clarity on DH's job, which is insane, but the most likely scenario is that he gets made redundant and then immediately offered a contract with the "new" smaller company... I wish they would get the fuck on with it as it's really fraying DH's nerves.

This big appointment for Dad is Friday, when we should get the results from the tumour and the chest Xray. I'm feeling a bit more optimistic about that, because I do think he's improved since he's been here, but we'll see. Will report back when we've seen the doc. Huge thanks for asking after us and being so generally supportive and kind Flowers

Wishing you and your Dad all the best for Friday 💐

Incakewetrust · 03/07/2024 23:32

I'm so happy to hear that your dad is less distressed and more settled. He's so lucky to have a daughter that loves and cares for him.
Without you being his advocate and fighting for him, he likely wouldn't be doing as well as he is.

Fingers crossed your DH gets his job sorted soon. What an absolute pain in the arse for you all.

I hope Friday goes well!

AdmittowearingCrocs · 03/07/2024 23:56

@sprigatito thanks for the update. I am so pleased to hear you dads wound is improving and he is more settled in himself and taking an interest in things.
Hope the appointment on Friday goes well and you get some answers.
Please ensure you take care of yourself amidst all the care you are providing for others. 💐

Weenurse · 04/07/2024 02:52

All the best for Friday

MixedCouple2 · 04/07/2024 03:10

Sorry about your recent situation.

As someone who worked in the NHS. Get to the GPs asap. Urgent apt. And get the GPS to refer him to specialist 2week referral. These are urgent apts that are given to patients with a higher risk of cancer and suspected cancers.
A&E not useful unleas it is a urgent situation and life threatening.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 04/07/2024 06:05

I hope all goes well on Friday, I am so glad things have calmed down. I hope your DH gets his job news soon, must be awful being in suspense.

BirthdayRainbow · 04/07/2024 06:17

I hope you are reassured at Fridays appointment.

uxie · 04/07/2024 07:32

Best of luck for Friday OP.

You're also someone who maybe needs to work on their reading comprehension Confused The thread is nearly 900 posts long, d'ya really think no one would have said what you said? @MixedCouple2 at least read op's posts when threads are this long. You'll see the issue has been/is being addressed.

@sprigatito I'm really glad he's improving. Hope Friday goes well Flowers

Vergeofbreakdown23 · 04/07/2024 09:37

Hoping the news is not too bad @sprigatito

AutumnalLeaves38 · 05/07/2024 17:43

Have been thinking of you all, OP, and sending strength your way.

TheShellBeach · 05/07/2024 17:44

Yes, absolutely thinking of you, your dad, your husband and your children.

sprigatito · 05/07/2024 17:51

It's GOOD NEWS!!!!! The tumour was an unusually large squamous cell carcinoma, they got it all out and he doesn't need any further treatment. He'll have follow up scans at 3 and 6 months because of the size of the tumour and the risk of recurrence, but for now he's in the clear. The chest Xray isn't back yet so fingers crossed for that to be clear as well - but I'm a lot less worried about that now they've told me the back lesion wasn't a metastasis. Can hardly believe it.
