Help!! What stinks?!

Dear god help me solve the mystery of my smelly bedroom. I'm at a total loss

Woke up today and bedroom smells funny. Definitely coming from this room. When you walk into the bedroom from another room you can smell it. I had a panic as last night my cat ran in to hide from the hoover and once years ago she pood on the floor- must have been too frightened to go to her tray. But I looked everywhere and it's not that. It smells different, I can't put my finger on it. Like rotting food? Fruit maybe? I thought maybe the bedding so I stripped it and washed it. Smell is still there. Windows have been open all day.

I've looked everywhere incase my toddler has done something bonkers like post a banana into an underwear drawer or something.

What in god's name is making this smell?!

Dead rodent under the floorboards?

onwardandupwards · 20/05/2024 13:37

My little one hid 2 potatoes and a banana under my bed once took 2 days to locate the smell!

longdistanceclaraclara · 20/05/2024 13:37

Dead mouse

PeterJohnson · 20/05/2024 13:37

Rotting fish smell is electrical fault I think. Check your plugs and lights.

Does your bedroom have a fireplace or does the chimney breast run up one of the walls?

We have experienced a dead bird in the chimney before and it gave off a sweet/rotting smells that filled the two bedrooms either side of the breast.

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/05/2024 13:42

If it smells like rotting veg it might be a dead rodent. Had similar recently and it started off smelling like rotting veg to me.

Hope you find the cause of the smell!

Definitely not a rotting fish smell. It's sort of sweet smelling. Each time I walk in I can't decide if it smells like fruit in a bin or a certain (apologies for this) poo nappy from my toddler 🤦🏼‍♀️

I checked everywhere- he's never pood on the floor but there's a first for everything!

It's not coming from outside as there's no smell in the other rooms to that side of the house.

It smells like it's coming from my side of the bed 😭 but when I pick up pillows etc to smell, everything is fine. It's freaking me out!

Also it's come on so suddenly which is bizarre

drains? We had a funny smell and a week later ours and neighbours drain blocked due to a fatburg in the mains sewer. It was definitely a “drains smell” like Venice on a bad day though.

Fireplace is in the living room. We unearthed an old hearth in this room when doing renovations.

Dear god we're going to have to start prying up the floors and drilling into walls. What do you do? Suffer the smell until the creature becomes a little skeleton? 😢 it's not massively overpowering and my husband had to take a minute to smell what I was talking about. I am really sensitive to these sorts of things.

Definitely more akin to a bin full of banana skins or something like that, rather than sewage.

I keep getting wafts off it! Definitely like a bin smell.

I stuck my head outside incase it's coming from there but doesn't seem to be. We live by the sea so sometimes a seaweed smell everywhere. It's not that.

Dead mouse in a socket or under floorboards? It’s a very distinctive smell. We had it in an old house we bought years ago and took us ages to figure out what it was.
Do you have an en-suite? Our shower drain is very smelly sometimes and gets in to the bedroom.
Do you live in the country? Our house reeks at the moment from a local farmer spreading shit.
Cat has pooped or wee’d somewhere and you just haven’t found it yet.

😂 good lord, smells everywhere!

We are by the sea but it doesn't seem to be from outside. It's from inside the room. What did the dead mouse smell like? I've only ever seen live ones from cats bringing them in but current cat won't set a dainty paw outside so that's not a possibility.

Do you have a rug OP? Took me ages to locate a dead mouse that has run injured under my large living room rug once

No rugs in the bedroom. All hardwood floor boards.

We had a bad smell in the kitchen once that took ages to locate. I thoroughly cleaned the sink, waste disposal & drain only to find that the smell was coming from a plant on the window sill. I had to throw the plant away unfortunately. It smelt like vomit!

Ubugly · 20/05/2024 14:00

I get olfactory hallucinations. And that smell you describe I've had a few times. Even reading your post I can smell it even though there is so smell here!

HollyKnight · 20/05/2024 14:01

Do you have carpet in your room? I had an issue one time with my old cat weeing in a spot under my bed. My room is usually cold so I never smelled a thing until the good weather arrived and heated up that lovely surprise. I have no idea how long it had been lurking there. Bye-bye carpet.

I had this for a period of time after covid. I could smell cigarette smoke on and off and was utterly convinced it was someone outside smoking and coming in our windows. It wasn't.

But my husband can smell this too. He kindly walked in and said "have you been farting in here". I said "no that's the bloody smell I was telling you about earlier!" 🤦🏼‍♀️

No plants anymore. I tried. They died. We didn't try again.

I’d go with dead mouse under floorboards. We had mice for a while and that exact smell was coming from my side of the bed too! I never worked it out but it eventually went, so best guess is that’s what it was 🤢🤢🤢

😭

I've mentioned to husband so we'll have to investigate it later.

If it is a dead mouse, they only smell for a couple of days until they dry out (bitter experience), so don't wreck your floorboards just yet. Ours started off like a sort of a papery/damp/nappy smell, then went much more pooey/rotting, and then vanished. I ordered these sachets that I was going to drop into the cavity wall from the attic, but the smell had gone by the time they arrived so I don't know whether they'd have worked or not!

This was going to be my next question. Surely a mouse is so small that it will decompose quickly.

The room smells worse now so I've got windows open as wide as possible and thinking we might have to sleep on the sofa bed for a few nights until the smell goes 🤷🏻‍♀️
