Mysterious writing under wallpaper - what does it mean?

Having a bedroom redecorated and the decorator has stripped the wallpaper to find these mysterious messages! Pat Tate could obviously just be someone's name (although it wasn't the surname of the people we bought the house from, or as far as I can find out, previous owners), and a quick Google says was a drug dealer who was murdered and whose story was then fictionalised see here.

But no idea what the other wording means - could be "but I'm also anchormam" or "but I'm also anchorm am". Or a spelling mistake for "anchorman"?

Any ideas?!

HearTheirEverywhere · 20/05/2024 09:49

What’s under the other paper 👀

alrightluv · 20/05/2024 09:49

How bizarre. Especially considering the murder story! 😳

TallulahBetty · 20/05/2024 09:49

Obvious question, are you near Essex?

ineedtostopbeingdramaticfirst · 20/05/2024 09:50

Favourite film characters maybe?

Are you in Essex, so this story would be relevant to your area ?

I’d say teenage edge lord messing about, given the black decor.

Wigeon · 20/05/2024 10:21

Not in Essex, although only about an hour and a half drive away from Rettendon where Pat Tate was apparently murdered. The previous owners bought the house in August 1997, the murders were in 1995 and the killers were convicted in Jan 1998 (according to Wikipedia), so the timeline makes sense if the new owners moved in and redecorated in around 1997/1997. This was the previous owners' son's bedroom but he would have been a little boy (possibly baby?) back then, so I am guessing whoever did the decorating (quite possibly the owner /his friends, it doesn't look very professionally done) wrote the words!

Not freaked out really, am sure someone just wrote it for a laugh, but curious as to what it all is meant to mean!

Although the paint appears to say "Anchormam" or "Anchorm am" not "Anchoram". Unless the person spelt his favourite character wrong, quite possible! 😁

I painted a speeding hedgehog on the wall before I wallpapered DS2's bedroom whilst he was at university.

I’d say teenage edge lord messing about, given the black decor.

I agree.

My sister got a friend to draw a thick white sharpie outline around her awkward splayed body on the floor of her house before carpet went down so it looks like someone outlined a dead body at a crime scent. She moved around so her leg outline looks like is is snapped at an inhuman angle Grin seemed like a good idea at the time.

I am voting teenage edge lord messing about, given the black decor.

Wigeon · 20/05/2024 10:47

Agree it's someone messing about and not some actual sinister message - just what does their joke actually mean?!

That's really funny - the carpet fitters must've been a bit bemused (unless they see this a lot).

Reminds me of when people stage murder scenes when the Google van goes by so on Streetview, for the next few years at least, it'll look a brutal crime took place at their house!!

SockNoMore · 20/05/2024 11:06

@MenopauseSucks you have to get your giggles where you can. I bet both carpet fitters and decorators see loads of these types of shenanigans.

You may be in the opening scenes of a horror movie, OP. Check carefully for camera crew and DON'T run a relaxing bath.

Yes! My brother is a painter and decorator and it's very common to write weird messages before papering over, just for fun! 🤣🤣

However, the paint in the OP's photos looks fresh and not something that's been covered over for years, so the wind up merchant is probably closer to home 😏

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 20/05/2024 11:19

😂@SoupDragon ’s speeding hedgehog 😂

starfishmummy · 20/05/2024 13:42

In the master bedroom we have graffiti that says name of previous owner is a sex addict.

Another room someone has helpfully written hiw many rolls of wallpaper they used.

Wigeon · 20/05/2024 20:38

Weird!!
I remember the case well, drug dealers, rival gangs double crossing each other etc. There was a 3 part documentary on sky quite recently.
Its long been claimed that the wrong people were found guilty of the murders.....

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/05/2024 09:24

When the rest of the wall paper is removed it might say 'exPAT sTATE pension' and it was just a previous occupier's reminder to contact with the Department for Work and Pensions. before they emigated?

KarenOH · 22/05/2024 10:42

My sister and I wrote in sharpie lots of lyrics to songs by the Moldy Peaches before it was wallpapered over. They are....questionable.

fatfgettingatter · 22/05/2024 11:20

My mum wrote I WILL KILL AGAIN in red paint before she put wall paper up.
3 years later we swapped home with someone that said they will re- decorate.
My mum had a smirk on her face when they said that.
I often wonder what they thought when they pulled the paper down.

Namechangenumber23 · 22/05/2024 11:56

My parent's home bought in 1970 is covered in various messages and pictures from all us children over the 50+ years featuring varying degrees of daftness and attempts to be sinister.

Tha last find was a message from our eldest sibling helping Mum decorate who found a message from me from around 1984 telling him he smelled 😂
