After being in temporary accommodation for nearly a year, we have finally been offered and accepted for a house. It’s with a housing association rather than directly with the council but still. It’s a brand new build with a lovely big garden. We no longer have to stress about trying to find a house and we have a good secure tenancy. Thank god

Nice to read something nice on MN.
Good luck op wishing you many happy years in your new home.

I don't know if you are in a student area, but if so, they all finish mid-end June and will often be looking to offload household furniture and goods for fairly cheap. Do you know anyone with a van or a car that could help you out, or do you have one? That can also make a difference to what you can collect.

Congratulations, keep your eyes out for bargains at this time of year!

Soubriquet · 16/05/2024 17:00

No we aren’t in a student area. I’m Lincolnshire. But thanks for the tip

Congratulations, I wish you many happy years in your new home.😀

PickAChew · 16/05/2024 17:04

Excellent news! I hope you settle in quickly. Some of the stuff you need you can pick up at places like BHF. Inexpensive rugs will provide a bit of softness on the bedroom floors for the kids until you can afford carpets.

Daisylookslost · 16/05/2024 17:05

That’s great news OP, we got our place this year too and it’s so good to have a secure decent home!
Wishing you many happy years there!🥂

caringcarer · 16/05/2024 17:13

Congratulations, its so exciting, a secure tenancy is a life changer - detached with a garden too 😍

Wishing you many, many happy years in your lovely new home.

ARichtGoodDram · 16/05/2024 17:18

Congratulations!!

When I came out of temp accommodation with my girls (a long time ago now) it took me 3 years to kit out my place completely, but that feeling of being secure at home every day made it all worth it.

May your new home be a very happy one

onwardandupwards · 16/05/2024 17:20

Congratulations on your forever home . Just think you never have to worry again. Hope you build wonderful memories. 💐

Oh how great for you, it must be such a massive relief.

I agree try British Heart Foundation for furniture. It might be a bit old but will give you time to save up. I donated a big leather sofa last year and although the seat cushions could do with new foam inserts it was in pretty good nick for it's age.

Also agree big cheap rugs are just as good as carpet if that's not immediately affordable. Freecycle and Marketplace for curtains - I got some really nice blackout ones a few years ago for £20.

In the 1970's my mum walked out with 2 kids and nothing but a suitcase of clothes and went into a refuge . We managed fine on second hand stuff as she got back on track, and she was a talented bargain hunter!.

Good luck with the new start.

NewGreenDuck · 16/05/2024 17:37

Well done! I hope you are very happy in your new home.

Villagetoraiseachild · 16/05/2024 17:44

If you have a Community Transport Charity shop near you they are worth keeping an eye on for white goods. They can also deliver for a small charge.
Wonderful news for you, Op!
Detached with a garden, whoop whoop!

its unfurnished. The downstairs is all vinyl flooring down so that’s one worry done. The upstairs bathroom has vinyl too but sort from that its all bare

We need to get a cooker. We have a fridge freezer but that desperately needs upgrading. We also ideally need a new washing machine and tumble dryer but it will be done bit by bit

I don't know if this helps but when I moved to my HA home with absolutely nothing, I rented a washing machine until I had enough money to buy 1.

Honeylemonandginger · 16/05/2024 17:51

Really happy for you.🌸

RookieMa · 16/05/2024 18:02

Congratulations

I hope more homes are built for British families that need them

Like the good old days
