How old is you oldest towel?

We tend not to throw towels away- they just get relegated from bath towels to swimming towels to outdoor swimming towels to dog towels etc.

Current oldest towel is one that DH (nearly 50) had as a child and not even as a best towel but as a swimming towel. We inherited it from MIL and I keep meaning to recycle it but it’s actually quite useful. It’s probably 60 years old.

Anyone else have very old towels lurking in their cupboards?

My childhood swimming towel is probably about 34 years old. Towels we were given when we got married are over 25 years old. All still perfectly serviceable - but not for best 😊

SlothsNeverGetIll · 11/05/2024 07:39

Ours are 'only' approx 15 years old. But we only own 2!
We've got good jobs and are in our 40s. I need to buy some more towels!

CrunchyCarrot · 11/05/2024 07:46

About 25 years old. Gosh OP, 60 years?? Is it still fluffy or just used as an emergency towel for floods, etc. Our oldest towels get used that way.

My oldest towel is 33 yrs old, it has faded in colour. We use it as a mopping up towel to be used in emergencies

flatwhiteinabucket · 11/05/2024 08:18

Bought 2 Ralph Lauren bath towels from TK maxx back in 2002... bit ragged round the edges, and the image has faded, but still used! ('Bout the only one big enough to actually go round and tuck in!)

thanKyouaIMee · 11/05/2024 08:19

My oldest is about 6 months old 😦 we just replaced them all at the end of last year!

flatwhiteinabucket · 11/05/2024 08:20

Love an old white crispy wind dried towel 😁am I the only one?

PlatinumBrunette · 11/05/2024 08:21

My mum’s got one that’s well over 100 years old! And it is in very good condition, I’ve used it in the past and the quality is astounding.
It has her grandfather's name tag sewn in as her family used to use a laundry service.

Lulu1919 · 11/05/2024 08:22

35 years old !!!

ItsMintUpNorth · 11/05/2024 08:22

Some beach towels we bought to take to Australia in 2001, like you they get relegated so one is a dog towel and one the dying hair towel!

Pussygaloregalapagos · 11/05/2024 08:22

Yeah got some inherited towels too. So probably 50 years. Got a few I bought on holiday 30 odd years ago. Got a lovely batch for wedding present 19 years ago. Bought some most recently 2 years ago when a kid started university.

KnickerlessParsons · 11/05/2024 08:23

Not sure, but some predate my 32year marriage.

I have one that is my grandma's - I think it is from 1950s/60s. I put it around my shoulders when I dye my hair.

Enko · 11/05/2024 08:24

Ours is 40 years old it was one dh bought when he took a 2 month trip to Australia. Its now anl dog towel

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/05/2024 08:26

We have towels that were wedding presents ... 30 years next month! They are definitely at the bottom of the pile now, the kids use them when they are dying their hair etc. They are a bit hard but not worn through or anything.

The hand towels we use in the kitchen - I bought them from Peter Jones in 1998 or 1999 (I remember because I worked next door at the time). They are still pretty much perfect! Good old John Lewis.

flatwhiteinabucket · 11/05/2024 08:27

@PlatinumBrunette 100 years old! That is amazing... family heirloom, eh? 👑

PickupaPension · 11/05/2024 08:28

DH has his swimming towel with his initials embroidered on them and he is 55 so similar age. We have two big M&S bath sheets that were a wedding gift 25 years ago.

100???! Shock

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 11/05/2024 08:32

Probably from around 1971!

TrickyD · 11/05/2024 08:34

I have a towel that still has my name tape on it which Mum sewed on when I went off to university aged 18. It wasn’t new then. I shall be 80 in June, so it is at least 62 and has done well.
It is a bit threadbare and I have darned it a few times. It is my favourite because it actually dries me, unlike the modern fluffy sort.

DMCWelshcakes · 11/05/2024 08:35

About 35 years old, give or take. I've got some bed sheets that are about 70 years old too.

FloraPostePosts · 11/05/2024 08:38

I’ve got a couple from when I first left home over 30 years ago. The ones from our first home together 25 years ago are still going strong.

Kelly51 · 11/05/2024 08:40

@SlothsNeverGetIll
2 towels? how do you manage? is that it? hand towel/bath towel?

Littletreefrog · 11/05/2024 08:41

I've had it 35 but its got to be older as its the one my mum let me take to Brownie camp and she wouldn't have let me take one of the good towels

I know right?! It may even be older - mum’s 88 this year. Genuine old style Egyptian cotton.
