How old is you oldest towel?

We tend not to throw towels away- they just get relegated from bath towels to swimming towels to outdoor swimming towels to dog towels etc.

Current oldest towel is one that DH (nearly 50) had as a child and not even as a best towel but as a swimming towel. We inherited it from MIL and I keep meaning to recycle it but it’s actually quite useful. It’s probably 60 years old.

Anyone else have very old towels lurking in their cupboards?

Definitely older than my oldest child who is 9! DH has some that he brought to the relationship that are, ooh, approaching 20 years old I reckon !

greengreyblue · 11/05/2024 23:31

10 years old.

takeitorleave · 11/05/2024 23:36

I think I have our changing towel from when I was little (string around the top to change on the beach) I think my parents had it before I was burn so possibly 65 years old? But I don't use it - it's just at the back of the towel cupboard

One I took from home when I left home about 20 years ago. Still functions and no plans to get rid!

Mandarinaduck · 11/05/2024 23:49

About 40 years old, from when I left home. It’s still in good condition and hasn’t been relegated to a lesser function. I find the quality of older textiles is better, more long lasting. Still I’m very impressed by the 100 year old towels!

nocoolnamesleft · 12/05/2024 00:00

Hmm, lets see. Some of my towels I had when I went to university nearly 35 years ago. They were second hand from my grandma...

Wallywobbles · 12/05/2024 07:36

Must be at least 70. It was my uncles in the army. Still in perfect condition weirdly. As is his army sleeping bag.

I inherited some of my DFs that are old and quite thin now but lightweight. And my DA gave me one that is lightweight. I assume they are all at least 30 years old. They are my favourites. I too love them when they are line dried and a bit scrubby.

As I age I'm all about lightweight for everything.

I have a beach towel from childhood, must be 35 years old.

mitogoshi · 12/05/2024 08:27

@flatwhiteinabucket

Dp likes crispy towels, as does his brother - I think it's weird!

Colombie · 12/05/2024 08:31

About 35 years. DH took it to uni with him, and it was a few years old then.

Have towels broken in the last few years? I've just had to replace a load that were only 5 years old because they were so worn and had threads peeling off at the edges.

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 12/05/2024 20:56

I have one that is coming up for 35 years. It was a wedding present.

OppsUpsSide · 12/05/2024 20:58

30, my Godmother gave it to me and I still love it and use it.

BurntBroccoli · 13/05/2024 19:08

34 - used for dying hair so it's a bit patchy! Perfectly fine though and no holes.

SheepAndSword · 13/05/2024 19:13

One from when I was a child, so over 30 years old now. It's a bit frayed around the edges but fine

henry88 · 05/06/2024 13:37

My oldest towel is about 15 years old. It's a bit worn out but still surprisingly soft and absorbent. I got it as a gift when I moved into my first apartment, so it holds a lot of sentimental value. Despite having newer towels, private label towel manufacturer I still use it occasionally. It’s like a comforting piece of my past that I can’t part with.

One that DP owned before we got married. Almost 40 years ago. It was old then!

It lurks at the back of the airing cupboard just in case!

ruethewhirl · 19/01/2025 19:52

About 30 years old, but these days it's only used for drying the cats...

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 19/01/2025 19:59

I have my old towel from when I was in the local swimming club as a tween. I wanted to keep it nice & soft so only ever used one side. It's looking pretty good for its age.

We also have a tea towel from when DH was in junior school, with a drawings all the children in the year drew of themselves. DH is 40 later this year!

muddyford · 19/01/2025 20:07

I have the towel my mother bought when I started sailing. In 1977. It's pensioned off now.

Whattheduck · 19/01/2025 20:21

I have a towel from when I was a baby so it’s 54 years old I also have the matching flannel
I still have a couple of my dd’s towels and flannels and she’s 20 one of them she still uses when she’s home from university

twiddleit · 19/01/2025 20:26

Probably about about 55 years, my dad brought it back from Belize when he went there for work.

I recently found its twin whilst clearing out my sister's house after she passed away.

They were obviously good quality!
