What's in your picnic?

SpringLobelia · 11/05/2024 06:51

Planning a picnic at the beach today if the weather holds.

My picnics usually contain;

  • marinated chicken drumsticks
  • sausages and tomato sauce
  • pasta salad with peas, corn, tomatoes, onions and mayo
  • fruit
  • chocolate
  • mini bottle(s) of prosecco
  • cola

Curious to know what is your go-to picnic!

Falafels
Pesto pasta
Houmous, focaccia and crudités
Olives
Crisps (love kettles salt and vinegar)
Fresh berries
Usually some kind of sparkling juice; elderflower, peach, grape etc

DifficultBloodyWoman · 11/05/2024 07:07

Poached salmon salad
Potato salad
Cheese and crackers
A bottle of water
A bottle of wine

I usually make someone else bring dessert because I can’t fit more into my picnic basket and the bottle of water is actually a very nice but stupidly heavy glass bottle.

SauvignonBlonk · 11/05/2024 07:20

I usually take a camp stove and cook some sausages. Or fajitas, chops all the stuff and put it in a plastic tub. I like a hot picnic.

Smoked salmon bagels
Cucumber and carrot sticks
Cherry tomatoes
Chickpea salad
Grapes
Watermelon
Crisps
Juice and water
Biscuits for the 'I'm starving. Is there anything else to eat' bit of the day

AtleastitsnotMonday · 11/05/2024 14:50

Marinated chicken skewers (tandoori, lemon, garlic and herb, chilli lime and coriander, paprika etc)
Cherry tomatoes
Crudités and dip
French stick
Cheese
Ham
Chutney
Pickled onions and gherkins
Punnet of strawberries
Grapes
(You do need to remember a couple of knives and I always take a zip lock bag to take the dirties home without making a massive mess.)

MavisPennies · 11/05/2024 14:54

Strawberries, cherry tomatoes, hummus, french stick, lump of cheese, a few gin in a tins, water bottles, tub of mini cornflake cakes all from the garage Sainsbury's on the way to the park.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 11/05/2024 14:54

Quorn picnic eggs
potato salad
boiled eggs
frittata or tortilla
crudites
banana and chocolate loaf cake
pop chips or crisps
tinned gin and tonic or Pimms
jar of stuffed olives
Tesco finest mixed olive bread
pots of jelly
pots of rice pudding

If I can be arsed I’ll make a posh spinach and ricotta lasagne and quiches which are cheese and tomato and quiche Lorraine. But so easy just to buy them too. If you plan it you can cook boiled baby potatoes and boiled eggs at same time.

My kinda gal Wink

My brother got his picnic bits from the Tescos in a garage the other weekend.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/05/2024 15:06

Our usual picnic is a homemade oat flatbread or two, with cheese and chutney, or homemade hummus and olives, in a sandwich bag which can be carried easily in a map pocket or my handbag. If we're on holiday it's likely to just be a protein bar apiece after a proper breakfast (adults, no kids now).

Yeah, we're fancy complicated stuff short of a picnic.Grin

PTSDBarbiegirl · 11/05/2024 15:12

Prepped watermelon
Berries/Grapes
Wraps/Cheeses/Salad/Tzatziki/hummus
Boiled eggs
Beers/Fizz/Juice
Smoked salmon/cream cheese/crackers
Olives/pate

Choices from above

Mrs King pork pie, homemade frittata and homemade potato salad, radishes, green salad, crisps, homemade cake!

longdistanceclaraclara · 11/05/2024 15:23

Baguette, butter, cheese, usually Brie, charcuterie, green salad. Grows and strawberries.

Red wine and thimble cups.

Proper plates, cutlery and a tablecloth if using a table.

I take my inspiration from the French. Their picnics are epic.

French bread, boursin, a little pork pie or picnic sized scotch eggs, apple or cranberry juice, grapes, cherries or peaches depending on the season. Maybe a cheeky cherry bakewell!

Lasagne at a picnic?? That's a new one on me!

DilemmaDelilah · 11/05/2024 19:30

We're a having a picnic next Saturday - its for 'family lunch' because my daughter is travelling down with her toddler for a few days so I'm getting everyone together - hence it's a bit more luxury than usual. We're having Chinese and barbecue flavoured chicken drumsticks, chicken skewers of various flavours, a bucketful of cooked sausages, a couple of kinds of quiche, Moroccan cous-cous, cherry tomatoes, coleslaw, mini naans, garlic bread, grapes, little apple pies, chocolate mini rolls, crisps. I think that's about it.... we will eat inside if the weather is nasty. If we actually go out for our picnic I will take apple juice, water, and a flask of hot water with some instant hot chocolate.

DatingDinosaur · 12/05/2024 00:14

My picnics are really boring. Sandwich (usually limp cheese and cucumber), fruit, crisps, biscuit, flask of tea.

But it tastes like manna from heaven after slogging up a mountain Wink

Sunnysidegold · 12/05/2024 07:28

These all sound yum. Our usual is:
Selection of sandwiches and wraps
Cocktail sausages
Crisps and dip
Tub of watermelon / strawberries/ grapes
Cartons of juice
Flask of tea or coffee
I like those tubs of treats from m&s - mini brownies and millionaire's shortbread

I had a picnic with my sister a few years ago - she put her cocktail sausages in a thermos so they were hot! I was so impressed at her thinking!

hendoop · 12/05/2024 07:42

Hummus and cucumber / carrot and celery dippers
Chicken satay sticks
Scotch eggs
Berries and grapes
Protein bars
Pepsi max
Crackers and cheese

UtterlyOtterly · 12/05/2024 07:50

DatingDinosaur Exactly that!

We virtually never just have a picnic, it's more of a meal up a large hill or mountain. So anything tastes good.

Sandwiches, flapjack, grapes, bananas, crackers or crisps. Food flask of pasta on cold days.

One day I'll organise a picnic for its own sake and have lots of luxury foods.

quietpink · 12/05/2024 07:53

Picnic for us today
Raided the fridge and come up with this menu
Steak sandwiches in granary bread
Vegan sausage hot dogs in brioche
Melon and raspberries
Sweet potato falafels
Cheese board
Iced coffee
Rose wine
Lime soda

SpringLobelia · 12/05/2024 07:57

Oh these all sound so good!

We had my menu upthread but I also bought mini Victoria sponges. And over catered as always so brought alot of it home again.

Today's plan is to do it all again!

This thread has inspired me to do a proper picnic. We do a lot of walks and NT type and beach days out but never take a ‘proper’ picnic, just a sandwich, sausage roll and packet of crisps each and a Tupperware full of whatever fruit is in the fridge. Sometimes some homemade cake if there is any and a reusable water bottle!

Im taking some inspo from this thread and doing a proper picnic soon!

countdowntomexico · 12/05/2024 08:01

So many good ideas. I'll also add mini milks (or other small lollies) in an insulated flask (pack the gaps with ice)
