How much does a tattoo hurt?

something6 · 08/05/2024 21:29

I want a tattoo a little nervous about it due to my low pain tolerance!

Anyone know the best place on the body that's the least painful?

Doesn’t hurt too much. Getting it laser removed hurts x10

ThePerfectDog · 08/05/2024 21:34

I’ve got tattoos on ankles wrist and back. Wrist hurt like a bastard, ankles it was nippy over the bone. Back was fine

something6 · 08/05/2024 21:36

I'm thinking outer thigh

I've had tattoos on my shoulder blades and upper thigh and ankle. I dont find them that sore tbh. Ankle one made my foot twitch a bit which was weird

Elfie23 · 08/05/2024 21:42

I have one going up my back and one on my wrist. The wrist hurt like hell, only took 15 mins thank god I don't think I'd have managed much longer! Back was a breeze compared to that 😂

PineappleTime · 08/05/2024 21:44

Wrist was painful. Thigh was fine. Other body parts also fine. It's really not as painful as you'd think.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 08/05/2024 21:44

I don’t think a small tattoo will
be unbearable regardless of where it is.

I’ve only had one. Not tiny but it didn’t hurt. I’ve recently had it removed. That was a bit more painful, but nothing bad.

Brefugee · 08/05/2024 21:45

the one across my upper back hurt like anything, and the one inside my left wrist (right wrist was ok - less ink)

But in general it kind of feels like when you have sunburn and someone uses the point of a pin to press down and scrape across your skin. It depends on your pain threshhold, and how big it is and how much ink is in it.

Cheesewiz · 08/05/2024 21:46

Outer thigh isn't too bad. Tattooists and heavily tattooed people mostly agree that the least painful place to get tattooed it the outer upper arm or outer forearm if you are worried about the pain start there?

aliasname · 08/05/2024 21:47

Yes it hurts. The bony places are the worst. Fatty areas eg. bum are supposed to be less painful.

Alsonification · 08/05/2024 21:48

I have one on the inside of my upper arm and I started to fall asleep when it was being done. The tattoo artist said that was the first time that had happened, ha ha. In fairness, I have a lot of fatty tissue in that area so I didn't feel much LOL.

CpOb · 08/05/2024 21:48

It's fine.

Hurts sort of like the first moment of an insect sting but before it gets to the actual painful part as you're not getting injected with something that stings.

It's more annoying than actually painful.

Loki64 · 08/05/2024 21:57

I think it really depends on the person.

I have a tattoo on my wrist, on the back of my leg, my thigh, hip, and inner upper arm.

For me wrist was easiest by far, hip was the most painful.

something6 · 08/05/2024 21:58

Outer thigh is my plan, I do a low pain threshold and was debating numbing cream but I'm not sure

Theredjellybean · 08/05/2024 22:00

Back of shoulder..it hurts like hell.
I have low pain threshold and so picked small black line drawing only . And it still bloody hurt..

CheerfulBunny · 08/05/2024 22:03

I'd say that during it just feels like being scratched persistently, along with the vibration of the machine. Afterwards it feels more like a burn, as if you've caught yourself on the oven shelf or iron but that fades pretty quickly. I'm a total baby but I was absolutely fine - although I only have a small tattoo on my wrist.

P0llyP0cket · 08/05/2024 22:05

I consider myself to have a high pain threshold. I have horses and have broken multiple bones. Childbirth was ok. The tattoo on my back? Three hours of tears and pain. Worst thing ever.

Cheesewiz · 08/05/2024 22:05

Emla is good stuff, leave it for 90 minutes if you can to get full effect. And make sure to let your tattooist know your plan as there are lots of tattooist who don't like tattooing on numbed skin.

SparklyFrogg · 08/05/2024 22:06

Completely varies depending on location, size, heavy handedness/ability of artist and the depth of the work being done (ie a tattoo which is all script or an outline is much less painful than something heavily shaded/filled in colour etc). More detailed/shaded/filled in tattoos often require already tattooed areas to be gone over multiple times, which increases the pain as you are going over broken skin. Also depends on you individually.

Outer thigh wasn’t too bad at all for me. I’ve had forearms and upper arms- much of it, particularly outlines was literally painless.
Heavy filled in colour on my inner arm was like burning fire, the worse pain for a tattoo I’ve done (I’ve got 14) although I completed the tattoo. Nothing so bad I wouldn’t go again. Inner ankle quite nippy, also triggers your foot jerk so hard to keep still!

Avoid ribs, hands, inner wrist, stomach, anywhere really boney or too sensitive if you’re worried about pain.

In my experience the fear/anxiety/anticipation of the pain is always significantly worse than the pain itself.

Cheesewiz · 08/05/2024 22:06

*if you do decide to use numbing cream that is

Bearpawk · 08/05/2024 22:06

I had a big one on my torso when I was younger. I'm considered pretty tough (have a chronic pain condition I live with very well and have had multiple surgeries/ skin grafts and I'm very strong) and fuck me - it hurt like a bastard 😂😂😂

ShittyTitty · 08/05/2024 22:15

Top of the foot hurts like fuck.

Wrist not as much at all.

something6 · 08/05/2024 22:45

Thanks all

Outer thigh won't be too horrendous, you'll be able to take it.
I have a low pain threshold & I have a half sleeve that goes onto my hand inc knuckles & thumb, one over my shoulder, one on my chest, one down my neck, one between my shoulder blades, one on my ankle & one on my inner wrist (I'm going to be a weird looking old lady 😁)
If I can take it anyone can.
Post a pic when you've had it done, good luck

CarryOnCharon · 08/05/2024 23:00

It really doesn’t hurt, just a tiny bit nippy in places. Go for it!
