The appeal of Robinsons/ squash - explain it as if I was an alien

Ok this sounds nuts but I was just talking to my American next door neighbour who was horrified at the whole idea of squash or cordial. I didn't realise it's just not a thing in the US. She thought it was mad that you put some liquid in the bottom of a glass then fill it with water. They have these gross-sounding super sugary powders instead. Anyway we fell about laughing because she said I'd failed to sell it to her. So do your best
tell an American why Brits give their families orange squash

....go!

I love a hot vimto in Winter. Yes it’s just flavoured water but think it has much less sugar than coke etc so is better for you. Whats not to like.

In summer I mostly drink cold water.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 07/05/2024 22:05

If she's American she'll know what grenadine is, and Italian soda which is cordial mixed with sparking water.

DaisyHaites · 07/05/2024 22:06

Vimto is heaven sent.

But I’d describe squash as like Gatorade, but to save you having to buy/store as much it’s concentrated down for you to dilute at home to your preferred strength. Not dissimilar to kool-aid, but not dehydrated.

ALunchbox · 07/05/2024 22:10

It tastes vile!

DrJonesIpresume · 07/05/2024 22:10

It is considerably cheaper than fresh fruit juice and it lasts much longer.

I want a gin & lime now...

DrCoconut · 07/05/2024 22:11

Hot squash sounds grim but i like it cold.

fashionqueen0123 · 07/05/2024 22:15

Ice cold orange squash is so much nicer than water in the summer.
It’s also great when the water somewhere doesn’t taste great.
I find it so annoying when I’ve been on holidays in the USA and the options are juices that look like various shades of Sunny Delight or water. Or coke.

I don’t drink fizzy stuff so squash is great!

Ribena has changed and it's a travesty.

Noo! I haven't had it for a while and had the idea it was the same!
I've got a bit posh and like Elderflower Cordial now.

LoreleiG · 07/05/2024 22:21

Canadians presumably must know what cordial is - I am not saying Canadians are Americans - because Anne of Green Gables drank it.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 07/05/2024 22:21

No idea. It's horrible stuff! Even the ones with sugar in also taste horribly artificial imo.

OutOfTheHouse · 07/05/2024 22:22

All the people who don’t like squash with sweeteners, get to your nearest Polish shop. They do squash with real sugar.

HaystackHair · 07/05/2024 22:30

We have the powdered stuff too don't we? We used to stick our fingers in it at school - orange flavoured.

DibDabs?

VerityUnreasonble · 07/05/2024 23:25

You need cordial for a lime and soda. So when you go to the pub and want a drink that still costs about 50p and is delicious and excellent if designated driver or to sip on summer afternoons / in between alcoholic drinks so you aren't on the floor by 3pm (this may just be me?) you have something to order. Also feels more like a "pub drink" than a coke somehow.

CaraDeLaVagine · 07/05/2024 23:38

Hello Alien

Wet, sweet fruity water (cordial). More interesting than just water alone but thinner/easier to drink than pure juice. Sweeter than watered down juice.
Can chug a lot of it for hydration and doesn't cost much.
Lemon barley used to help with cystitis if cranberry juice not available.

I find it quenches my thirst more than plain water. If I’m really thirsty I will always have a squash.
tell her about hot squash, it will blow her mind 🤣

Hot blackcurrant squash is the best!

bolderthan · 07/05/2024 23:42

the only nice squash is Vimto (the proper one, not the no added sugar one). It's a gorgeous thirst quenching drink.

Colinorpercy · 07/05/2024 23:48

Our house is never without diluting juice (Scotland so would never call it squash lol), it’s an absolute cupboard staple. It’s cheap to buy, no calories (in the no added sugar ones) and makes water taste better.

imtryingtoleave · 08/05/2024 00:28

i like high juice

murasaki · 08/05/2024 00:29

Tap water London tastes vile, I grew up in a soft water area, so squash gets my water quotient in. Surely a powder just settles at the bottom of the glass if you don't drink it straight away, that sounds grim.

RobinEllacotStrike · 08/05/2024 00:34

Squash is disgusting & gross and I have no idea why so much supermarket space is devoted to it, or what the appeal is.

Apart from Roses Lime Cordial - that is lush. (And I might have spent several years drinking vodka & lime cordial on ice when I was early 20's).

I grew up drinking powdered cordial - it just dissolves. There is no sediment.
