Edinburgh hotel which doesn’t cost £££££

MillyMalone · 06/05/2024 11:02

We are going to Edinburgh at the end of June for a family wedding. We need a cheap-ish hotel for 1 night, but I didn’t heed mumsnet advice and stupidly had that expensive 3rd child! So there are 5 of us.

I can’t find anywhere for us to stay that will be less than £500. Even premier inn is quoting £470 because we have to 2 rooms.

Has anyone got any suggestions? We don’t need anywhere really fancy, just not dodgy. Kids are all primary age, and I’d happily make them bed share if hotels would allow it!

thank you 🙏

In case it makes a difference, we need the hotel on Sat 29th! (I don’t know if there is a gig on or something that night, or if Edinburgh is just always so pricey!)

Have you looked at apartments? They might be better value than a hotel for 5 people.

jonnyhatesjazzzzz · 06/05/2024 11:10

There are some places cheaper than that on airbnb and booking.com

Tbh the premier inn price is great for Edinburgh in the summer. I don't think you will do better.

ILikePistachios · 06/05/2024 11:11

Try Corstorphine Lodge Hotel, they have family rooms for just under £300 for 1 night, two double beds, one single bed, I'm sure the 5 of you could make that work somehow

Edinburgh hotel which doesn’t cost £££££
ILikePistachios · 06/05/2024 11:13

I'm sorry that screenshot is blurry, unsure how to make it clear but it's £289 for check in 28th June, checkout 29th, family room.
They have another family room available, same bed situation for £300

BollockstoThis1 · 06/05/2024 11:13

Think I would look at an apartment.

Edinburgh hotel prices have shot up enormously and not helped by the Scottish school holidays starting around mid June and usually some sort of highland games or something.

ApolloandDaphne · 06/05/2024 11:13

Where is the wedding? Hotels out at Edinburgh Park might be better for you? Trams run out there or taxis if you are going to be very late.

Tumbler2121 · 06/05/2024 11:16

Dunfermline Travelodge really new, not far to Edinburgh. In fact, stay an extra night!

Nauticalthemedloo · 06/05/2024 11:31

Dunfermline is quite a bit away from Edinburgh, that wouldn't be convenient to you.

@BollockstoThis1 that did make me laugh out loud! Highland Games so stereotypical, I don't imagine that will be the reason for high hotel prices but it could be because it's national shortbread week 😂

Bellsandwhistle · 06/05/2024 19:13

When mine were primary age - family if 5 too - I booked family rooms for 4 and chucked an extra one in a bed. Never once did I get pulled on it. If having breakfast I’d just offer to pay for the 5th if they noticed - they rarely noticed and never asked me to pay.

CormorantStrikesBack · 06/05/2024 19:14

The central youth hostel? Think they have family rooms.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/05/2024 19:18

Whereabouts in Edinburgh?
We recently stayed in Edinburgh East PI - about half the cost of more central ones, and 20 mins into the city centre on the bus.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 06/05/2024 19:21

Stay outside Edinburgh and get a train into and a taxi back.

Dunfermline, Livingston, Midlothian. Train into town is about £6 and a taxi to each is about £50

It will save you £££s

FannyFifer · 06/05/2024 19:23

Where about is wedding?

To add booking.com has several very nice hotels in Dunfermline that night at around £115 per room. So add £6 pp on train and £50 for a taxi.

Castlecould · 06/05/2024 19:28

Try the Hilton in Fountainbridge, it’s not right in the city centre but not too far out and good for public transport. This hotel was cheaper than Premier Inn’s etc when we stayed last summer.

A taxi from Edinburgh to Dunfermline costs a minimum of £79 (using a taxi firm quote tool) and the train fare would be an additional £25 for 2 adults and 3 kids so more than £100. You would be better using that money to stay closer.

I live in Dunfermline and it costs £45-50 for a pre-booked taxi from Edinburgh to Dunfermline. I do this whenever I'm going out in Edinburgh. I have a taxi booked for next weekend.

Happy to give you and OP details of some local taxi forms for use if you wish.

So £75 (taxi and train) plus the cost of a much cheaper hotel.

Netflixreject · 06/05/2024 19:49

Premier Inn Leith is coming in at under £300 for 2 rooms. You'll be able to get a tram to city centre or walk
Novotel Edinburgh Park is just over £400 and again xan get tram into city centre

LIZS · 06/05/2024 19:50

Try aparthotels - Adagio, Marriott, Holyrood.

Pinkbonbon · 06/05/2024 19:54

If stay in Glasgow city centre and catch the train through to Edinburgh. Its only like 45 minutes or something and they're fairly regular.

Half the price easily.

Igneococcus · 06/05/2024 19:59

Check the Haymarket Travelodge, I stayed there a few times because it's right next to the German consulate and dd's current student flat is about 5 min away. It's basic but perfectly fine for a night. It's always been the cheapest option when I wanted to stay in Edi.

LoopyGremlin · 06/05/2024 20:00

Babadook76 · 06/05/2024 20:02

Are you serious? I’ve been looking today for hotels in Edinburgh for a long weekend for a family of 5 over a 6 nations weekend when prices are MASSIVELY inflated and there’s fucking tonnes for that price! Where on earth are you looking? I’ve currently torn between a 3 bed apartment on air BnB, a 2 room hotel or a 4 bed houseboat for £700 for the 3 nights!!
