Low calorie satisfying sweet treats

I am an absolute chocolate and sugar fiend. I'm trying to keep it in check but I've accepted that quitting sugar altogether isn't happening for me right now.

At the end of the day I need something sweet! Something that isn't a share bag of peanut m&ms for example.

I like a couple of chocolate covered rice cakes (that's still 164 calories ffs!!!) or a couple of Abernethy biscuits (only slightly better calorie-wise). Also love a large handful of marshmallows.

What are your calorie-conscious treats if you have a raging sweet tooth?

You need a curly wurly op. 97 calories.

If you put them in the fridge they take a while to eat too.

Fruit?

Sorry, but people who crave chocolate could eat fruit all day and at the end of it would still be desperate for chocolate!! Or is that just me.......

I like a bowl of warm porridge with a little honey or sugar. It's sweet but also very filling. I rarely want another sweet treat afterward. I have no idea how many calories that would contain - probably a fair amount but it's also real food with nutritious fats, protein and fibre.

Recommend "ultra processed people" which talks a lot about why it is our modern ultra processed diet that is causing diet / weight related problems, not your lack of willpower. Low calorie (low nutrition) artificially flavoured foods might actually be driving your cravings and overconsumption.

Edited

I had a bowl of warm porridge with a little sugar this morning. Two and a quarter hours later I am starving.

I follow someone on instagram who does the idea of adding

So having a portion of m&ms but add it to Greek yoghurt mixed with a bit of sugar free syrup (I use butter toffee or caramel flavour)
Gives more protein, more filling and you get the chocolate with then less cravings because you've balanced it out

Yoghurt/ chia seeds / small spoon of jam

Nottogetapenny · 04/05/2024 00:05

Cadburys curly wurly 98 calories, put it in the freezer, then take it out when frozen, and have little bites, it takes a bit longer to eat, but yummy.

Suck a sugar free boiled sweet

@buffyslayer thanks for that link. I went through her posts and found a walking challenge she’s doing called StepBet. Have you joined any of them? It sounds like it might actually motivate me to get my ass going. 😂

Bliss bars, come in four different flavours including dark chocolate and raspberry.
Great texture and very chocolaty. About 95 calories.
Boxes of four or five for around £1 in Iceland.

Starlia · 04/05/2024 05:16

I love sorbet, especially strawberry and pineapple flavours. Chocolate sorbet is also nice, bit too sweet for me but only 85 calories or so for one serving.

snowlady4 · 04/05/2024 05:28

Options hot chocolate (40 calories,) and a small bar of chocolate like a freddo or cadburys little bar.- a decent chocolate hit and takes a bit of time to consume!

pinkstripeycat · 04/05/2024 05:40

Chocolate snakajax

hellogood · 04/05/2024 05:57

These from Aldi are really good. They also do peanut butter and salted caramel. Last night I scraped the chocolate ice cream off the stick and had it with a bowl of raspberries which was delicious.

Also also do a version of the Oppo ice-creams, but I prefer these lolly ones. They're really creamy and I like it that I don't have to use any restrain to not have a huge bowlful!

*Aldi also

Theunamedcat · 04/05/2024 07:09

I've just gone cold turkey on milk chocolate and massively cut down my dark chocolate consumption it will be better in the long run

Currently my head is pounding 😪

Girlintheframe · 04/05/2024 07:18

Skinny bars - Bakewell and chocolate caramel are lovely and chewy

Curly wurly

Cadbury 'little' bars

Any snack/fun sized chocolate actually

Ice cream is generally not too bad per scoop for cals

Lu biscuits - 120 cals for 3

Nairn low sugar biscuits - 47 cals each

Rich tea - 37 cals each with low sugar jam

Jelly

Ive given up most of these now except for the skinny bars and Lu biscuits. I decided with the chocolate it was easier to have none.

If I’m trying to lose weight I set myself a certain number of calories to eat for the day. I quite often include a couple of chocolate treats in there. I don’t like any of the lame low calorie options! A Kit Kat is good as they are 100ish calories (dark choc mint ones are my favourite and the dark chocolate is more satisfying than mint). Or I wait til the end of the day and save some calories to eat some celebrations (50 cals each) as a ‘reward’ for reaching my targets.

Caramel rice cakes (51 cal each).

Until you have about 8 in one go like i did the other day!

SallyWD · 04/05/2024 08:34

Anyone said Jaffa Cakes yet?

SirChenjins · 04/05/2024 08:41

Watching with interest (apart from the fruit and porridge - that’s breakfast, not a sweet treat)

buffyslayer · 04/05/2024 08:52

@JingsMahBucket I haven't! Only as I already do peloton challenges

PupInAPram · 04/05/2024 09:05

Add spoonful of cocoa powder into full fat greek yogurt. Add frozen cherries or raspberries. Give a good old stir. Tastes like most delicious chocolate ice cream but pretty nutritious.😘

Couple of thoughts. I was eating some mango recently and honestly it was devine. It was sweet but tangy. Problem I find with fruit though is when they are good there is nothing better but so often fruit is blah. For that reason I will spend a bit more on fruit but even then it's not guaranteed.

Another idea is habit reversal techniques which I have had exposure to for something completely different. It kinda works like this. When you want to do your habit (eat sweet stuff in your case) you do a counter thing that inhibits you from doing the habit you want to do. Eventually neuro pathways are created on the brain that means when you get the urge to do X you will respond with doing Y. In your case it might be something like - urge to eat sweet stuff but you will eat something spicy. You are kinda tricking the brain. I have seen it work but it's effort.
