Would you consider this a balanced load of washing?

It’s an 8kg capacity washing machine 1 double duvet cover
1 pillow case
1 bath towel (smaller size than a bath sheet)
3 pairs of pants.

i rang up to report a fault and was asked if I do balanced loads. Not really sure if the above is balanced or not. Thanks

I'd say that's too much, I'd reckon to include the duvet cover or the towel, not both.

Leeksinthesun · 02/05/2024 16:29

Really? Hardly sounds like anything to me

dementedpixie · 02/05/2024 16:30

Doesn't sound like too much. I do 4 bath towels and 2 hand towels in a 1 wash in a 9kg machine. When I wash bedding it takes the duvet cover, sheet, 4 pillow covers.

no way. I’d have plenty of towels in a wash, or 3 full bedding sets at least.

Greywitch2 · 02/05/2024 16:30

Too much? Really?

I would put the sheet, duvet cover and 4 pillow cases in. Surely nobody splits their bedding into two washes?

shoppingshamed · 02/05/2024 16:31

Is that the only load you've done in the machine? If it's new and already faulty I'd just say yes, what difference is it going to make to getting the fault fixed?

dementedpixie · 02/05/2024 16:31

Wtf do they even mean by a balanced load?
OP it doesn't sound like 8kg worth of washing to me.

What is the fault?

Wolfpa · 02/05/2024 16:31

What kind of pants are they?

jeans get really heavy so I would say that is too much.

if they are made out of other materials I would say it’s ok.

if you call nickers pants then I would say it’s a light load.

Pants will be underwear; not trousers of any description

I’ve got a 7kg machine and often put more than that in without it being a problem!

Bluevelvetsofa · 02/05/2024 16:32

I would split bedding into two washes, if it included the mattress and pillow protectors, otherwise the machine should cope with sheets, pillow cases and duvet cover.

Maybe she meant that the load was unbalanced in the machine, not that there was too much in it.

dementedpixie · 02/05/2024 16:33

I've never called my underwear knickers BTW. Pants for the ladies and boxers for the men in our house

earther · 02/05/2024 16:33

This morning i done 4 pairs of jeans 1 pair of joggers 4 t-shirts socks pants bras small bath towel 3 strap tops.
I also have an 8kg washing machine.

PuttingDownRoots · 02/05/2024 16:34

It should be about two thirds full.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 02/05/2024 16:37

Hell, I do the sheet duvet cover and pillow cases from a double and a single all in together! Maybe this is why the 'I do 47 loads of laundry a week' threads make no sense to me! Grin

I thought balanced was 'evenly spread in the drum', not (just) related to the max weight? Obviously if you overfill so there's no space at the top it can't move around properly and can become unbalanced, but if there's a sideways hand sized ish gap empty at the top of the drum I assume it's all fine.

Trainers or something would be an 'unbalanced load' I guess?

Roomination · 02/05/2024 16:38

Thanks everyone.
shoppingshamed. I’ve had the machine since last June. It’s been fine up to about a month ago. AO have booked an engineer but said if they can’t find a fault I can be charged £55. I told her I did balanced loads as I don’t think there should be any problems with a machine less than a year old. If they can’t find anything though they’ll charge which isn’t great.

By pants, I mean pairs of women’s briefs.

Surely as it’s less than a year old it’s under guarantee?
plus you are covered by the consumer act of 2015

Would you consider this a balanced load of washing?
LoopyLolaGranola · 02/05/2024 16:49

It’s not what you put in, it’s where you put it ie if you put 2 heavy bath sheets on the left of the drum, and a bunch of light things like socks and baby clothes on the right of the drum so the weight isn’t evenly distributed. Whether anyone actually checks that in real life is another question 😂

PlantDoctor · 02/05/2024 16:50

balanced means not putting one heavy thing and a couple of light bits in, as one side of the machine will be more heavily weighted than the other as they spin and throw it's balance off, which can damage it. Yours sounds balanced.

Deadringer · 02/05/2024 16:53

I put way more than that in, but I do find that sometimes when I wash a duvet cover it comes out really wet as the machine doesn't seem to spin as well. Presumably it's a balance thing.

Doesn’t it move about as the drum goes round? 😁
You couldn’t keep things to one area of the drum if you tried.

thedendrochronologist · 02/05/2024 16:56

I don't hin

It can also mean not enough.

We had an engineer who explained they don't have a 1 item load option anymore as it can unbalance the machine and cause an issue.

So it was probably your small load - which that was probably less than 1kg.

www.pennylane-domestics.co.uk/unblalanced%20load.htm

This explains it

thedendrochronologist · 02/05/2024 16:57

I meant I don't think it's too much but is probably not even

CountingCrones · 02/05/2024 16:59

I think it sounds unbalanced. The bulk of the duvet cover should be about the same as the bulk of the other items so the drum doesn't get lopsided when it spins.

I have to but it's superking. Surely it depends on the material as well. Just treated myself to some linen bedding which is really heavy when wet.
