How long for antibiotics to work?

pelotonaddiction · 30/04/2024 19:06

Went to the GP yesterday with a temp of nearly 40c and a sore throat, couldn't stop shivering
Tonsillitis (I get it fairly regularly but haven't had it for 2 years and this is one of the worst I've been with it)
Started antibiotics yesterday, woke up to bedding and pjs soaked through with sweat and my throat is now covered in pus and getting worse by the hour
Temp is down to 38.5 with paracetamol taken all day

Last time penicillin didn't work and I'm a bit worried that it won't this time and how long to give it (clarithromycin I needed last time)

Within 24-48 hours you should be feeling a lot better is what I was told with mastitis. I got worse and ended up admitted on IV antibiotics as a sepsis concern. Hope you feel better soon.

pelotonaddiction · 30/04/2024 21:07

I'll give it until Thursday morning then and see
The whole of my throat is white

I was given antibiotics for a sore throat (no white spots or pus but very sore for 10 days) at the start of covid. By the third dose I turned a corner and got better quickly after that. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm on 4 doses of 2 tablets a day for 10 days
Got 2 in yesterday and a full 4 today so had 6 so far

If no better by lunchtime tomorrow I'd ask for a review

pelotonaddiction · 30/04/2024 21:57

Annoyingly I can only ring at 8 so I'll probably have to give it until Thursday am

You must feel dreadful. Those types of throats are excruciating and miserable. When I get them, I am told 24-48h should see beginnings of improvement. You could ring in the am on the basis that they'll probably not call back til later on, by which time you'll have had another couple of doses. Explain why you're worried, they'll understand. Often wish they had a way of swabbing for bacteria there and then, so the right ab can be given from the off.

I have a gross pic but it's probably for sporners corner GrinBlush

As above, if they don't answer the phone unless ar 8am ring then. Or if it's like my doctors ring then and wait in a queue for an hour before being told all the appointments have gone 🙄

pelotonaddiction · 01/05/2024 01:06

I'm ringing them in the morning
My ears hurt, my glands (I think) hurt, throat is dripping white stuff and temp back up to 39
I'm so miserable!

I went through this recently - haven't had tonsillitis for absolutely years, caught it from god knows where all of a sudden and was in complete agony with it. I was no better after 4 or so days, went to GP and got given a 10 day course of antibiotics due to high temp/pulse/pussy tonsils, terrible throat pain - the works.

I didn't really feel any noticeable improvement in my symptoms until about day 4/5 of the antibiotics though and was still having bad temperature/shivers until I got towards the end of the course, and it then took another 2 weeks or so for the majority of the throat and ear pain from it to clear up for me (saw my GP again after the antibiotics were finished as was still a bit symptomatic). It really knocked me for 6 and has taken me ages to get over it.

To be honest i would go to A&E

It sounds like you need IV antibiotics

Are you able to drink?

Yes can drink and swallow - I'm neutropenic so try to avoid hospital as much as possible!

Will ring the doctors at 8am, they're usually very good at seeing you quickly

More so reason to go?

pelotonaddiction · 01/05/2024 01:24

I honestly don't think it's an a&e trip yet

Last time I had it was 2022 and it didn't clear after 2 courses of antibiotics and they didn't admit me even then
I reckon by the time I'm triaged (they'll divert me to the OOH GP section as it's not for a&e) it'll be 8am anyway

If the temperature isnt going down and your throat is ‘dripping puss’
I think its worth getting checked out

But either way, Good luck and hope u feel better soon

coxesorangepippin · 01/05/2024 02:11

Oh god you poor thing 💐💐

Sounds like you need stronger antibiotics really

Flowersonmyorchid · 01/05/2024 07:13

Glad your doctors are good at seeing you. Hope you feel much better soon, that sounds miserable.

pelotonaddiction · 01/05/2024 08:09

They've got me in for 10.30 with an advanced nurse practitioner

OP posts:
Flowersonmyorchid · 01/05/2024 08:46

Good! Hopefully the nurse can see if you need new antibiotics and nip in to get the prescription signed while you're there.

pelotonaddiction · 01/05/2024 10:51

Clarithromycin for 7 days
She said my throat looks nasty, I'm tachy and still have a temp

OP posts:
Greentomatoes21 · 01/05/2024 13:18

You poor thing. Glad they've changed it. Hope you see improvement quickly. I had to change from penV to clarithromycin for same thing once. Not long into the clarithromycin, I could visibly see the white infected bits shrinking away when I had a look down! Quite amazing. Hope same for you.

PoopingAllTheWay · 02/05/2024 00:16

Did she note the Tachycardia?

pelotonaddiction · 02/05/2024 01:06

PoopingAllTheWay · 02/05/2024 00:16

Did she note the Tachycardia?

I guess so? I didn't see what she typed but on the pulse thing on my finger it was 118

OP posts:
PoopingAllTheWay · 02/05/2024 02:48

Is your heart normally that fast? 118 is to fast and needs medical attention
