Have you lost weight eating carbs?

Hi. I lost a bit of weight eating lots protien and a bit of carbs. Carbs always wholemeal. Really slowed down though. I not been feeling too good the last 2 weeks, feeling a bit sick on and off. Too old to be pregnant. Started to feel better. Just have been eating what I fancy mainly say a meat salad sandwich or plain pasta. Bit of fruit. I gone and lost 7lbs. Has anyone lost weight calorie counting and still eating carbs. Just made me think. Should I just eat less and what I fancy. Thanks.

I had 2 eggs for breakfast, fish with a huge salad for lunch. Only had carbs with my evening meal and the weight came off.

I have PCOS insulin resistance, it's the only way I can lose weight.

Having read lots of posts on this over the years, I think this comes down to your body and what it feels it needs. Some people seem to work extremely well on high protein diets, with few or no carbs and feel more satisfied and fuller for longer. I don't, I have done a high protein diet and I always felt a bit 'odd' for want of a better word. I feel better eating 'balanced' (as in carbs, protein, salad or veg) meals and the odd sandwich, I eat some bread and some potatoes, not huge amounts, but for me it works better than cutting out that stuff. For me, weight loss is about calories in and out, but for some others it seems to matter what they eat. I still eat lots of eggs, cheese, do eat meat occasionally, beans, it's important for me to eat protein, and not too many carbs, but cutting them out doesn't suit my system, I also get lots of headaches, even after months on a low carb diet. It's not for me, and neither is intermittent fasting- you just have to know your own body.

I did; not by changing my diet but by eating less of the same things.

Of course.

It’s about the amount of calories you eat. A lot of people find it easier to maintain a deficit when not eating carbs (or whatever other diet, like intermittent fasting) but that by no means means that eating carbs prevents weightloss.

treacledan71 · 28/04/2024 19:03

Thanks all. Interesting to read. I think I might have a go calorie counting with a mixture of all different foods and include healthy carbs.

You can plateau with weight loss. Eating carbs then kick starts the metabolism.

Runningbird43 · 28/04/2024 19:04

Yes.

i can’t lose weight on a high protein high fat diet. I need carbs or I’m permanently hungry. I have tried many times and end up gaining weight- protein does not fill me up and I can eat my entire daily calorie allowance in one cheese snack, and be starving 10 mins later.

there is research that your gut metabolism and bacteria adapt to a certain diet. Those who were very active as children adapt to burn high amounts of carbs, those more sedentary don’t. Holds true for me at least.

i lose weight simply by eating less and counting calories

Increasing NEAT makes a massive difference too. Life is so sedentary now, I find exercise in itself drives my appetite massively, so making sure I’m on my feet as much as possible, walk to the shop, go for a walk while I’m waiting for kids, walk on treadmill while watching tv and sending emails etc.

Plenty of people are successful at losing weight eating carbs, often via calorie counting. More power to them but it doesn't work for me.

As pp says everyone's body is different, a big chunk of the population is carb tolerant (like my DH who can lose weight eating pizza) Another big chunk are less tolerant and are more at risk of insulin resistance, etc like me.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/04/2024 19:05

Yes, 3.5 stone.

bradpittsbathwater · 28/04/2024 19:20

Yes. On slimming world. I've tried low carb/keto before and suffered with bad keto rash so I wouldn't do it again.

lottiegarbanzo · 28/04/2024 19:25

Yes. Weight is calories in vs calories out.

What you can sustain by choice, or enjoy, is another question.

DaveWatts · 28/04/2024 19:27

I have - and not by calorie counting either. But was only eating carbs in the form of root veg, pulses and whole grains - and I don't mean wholemeal bread etc but literally grains. Spelt, oat groats, pot barley, quinoa, millet etc. No brown rice, pasta or any sort of flour. Was also keeping fats and sugar to a minimum. Worked very well for me but everyone is different!

wheresmyshoe · 28/04/2024 19:32

I'm a carb addict, give me that above sweets, chocolate, booze or anything else. I've lost a stone and a half in a year by being rigid on MFP count of 1200 calories. I mean rigid, weighing everything, I have toast but that bread gets weighed, same with potatoes. You can eat carbs and lose weight but it won't happen on mega portions, get ready for the shock of what 30g of cornflakes actually looks like.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 28/04/2024 19:34

Yes.
I eat anything I want, my meals are mostly based around carbs as I dislike meat and fish.
I've just eaten what I want within my calorie allowance. Over the last year I have lost 4.5st.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 28/04/2024 19:39

Here is an example of my food this week. 1290 cals is what has been worked out for me to lose 1/2lb a week (depressing, but I'm short!). As you can see, plenty of carbs! (No breakfast as I'm never hungry until lunch).

Yes. 50kg. Just eat normally. Bread potatoes rice, anything really. Pizza sometime. Calories overall counted ovwr a week with 1 day non counting

WantToMakeWorldSilkySmooth · 28/04/2024 19:41

What are "healthy" and "unhealthy" carbs?

BeretRaspberry · 28/04/2024 19:42

I’ve not tried losing weight for a while, but I definitely did lose weight eating plenty of carbs. Even, god forbid, white carbs. I can’t do wholemeal pasta or rice due to IBS. I can do wholemeal and grainy bread though.

Even now, when I have protein it doesn’t satisfy me as much as carbs. It absolutely baffles me how much carbs are hated on here. We need carbs.

Also, potatoes are ranked either the most or very nearly the most satiating food.

Youdontevengohere · 28/04/2024 19:44

Yes. I ate whatever I wanted, just under a certain calorie limit.

stormy11 · 28/04/2024 19:52

Yes I have lost over 3 stone with eating carbs. Always weigh them and count the calories. Let us know how you get on.

BlackCat007 · 28/04/2024 19:55

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/04/2024 19:05

Yes, 3.5 stone.

That’s amazing. What adjustments did you make?

MaryBay · 28/04/2024 19:57

I lose weight as long as my calories are low enough even if I ate nothing but Ferrero Rochers all day.

Jeannie88 · 28/04/2024 20:00

Slimming world says you can eat as many carbs as you like and I lost over 20lb! Xx

effoffwind · 28/04/2024 20:01

Yes , doing well on slimming world
Eating rice , pasta , potatoes and a small amount of bread
Losing every week

mollymine · 28/04/2024 20:05

Yes me, I lost weight eating a diet with plenty of carbs, mostly wholemeal. I tried keto and low carb but never felt well on it even after sticking to it for months and trying all the things people say to try. I just felt so crappy on that kind of diet I couldn't really exercise.

I'm actually veggie now although I do have some dairy and eggs, I have loads more energy to exercise, no more brain fog and I lost over 4 stone that I had struggled to shift for years. I was still eating meat when I started but realised over time I felt my best on a diet without meat, plenty of carbs and an absolute ton of fresh fruit and veg.
