Think Great British Bake Off GIF by PBS

What do you usually call the small round bread item sometimes known as roll / cob / bun etc? Comment if I've missed your option off the poll but I can only add 6 options!

Cob. I'm from the east midlands.

stormy11 · 25/04/2024 15:53

Paul Hollywood confirmed its a cob! 😆

iluvcakez · 25/04/2024 15:54

I'm a northern gal. It's muffin or nuffin

stormy11 · 25/04/2024 15:54

It's a cob here in the East Midlands

MadelineWuntch · 25/04/2024 15:55

Teacake. And no, I don't mean the thing with currants in.

HowardTJMoon · 25/04/2024 15:59

I call it a roll (or a bap if it's big) but I did once work with a delightful chap from Sunderland who called them breadcakes.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/04/2024 16:01

How small? - Globule?

loropianalover · 25/04/2024 16:02

CountingCrones · 25/04/2024 16:02

An obvious linguistics trap

Justcallmebebes · 25/04/2024 16:02

Bap or cob. I use both. E Mids with Northern parents

CountingCrones · 25/04/2024 16:03

Also, you forgot Batch and Breadcake

Noidea2024 · 25/04/2024 16:05

Definitely a roll......unless it's for a burger, then it's a bun. SE

Bananadramallamas · 25/04/2024 16:05

It's a cob if it's crusty, and a barm cake if it's soft. Ffs. Paul Hollywood is a scouser, he should know that.

Bananadramallamas · 25/04/2024 16:07

A roll is not round, it is sausage shaped, like a bridge roll.

Dacadactyl · 25/04/2024 16:07

Bun or roll.

Bananadramallamas · 25/04/2024 16:08

I'm talking about north of the Watford gap.

SnakesAndArrows · 25/04/2024 16:08

Barm cake, bread cake or bread roll. (Manc with Yorkshire leanings now living on Merseyside).

Cobs are crusty.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 25/04/2024 16:12

I never use the words cob or barm cake. I wouldn't even know what they were. Buns and rolls are different things to me. A bun would be soft, sometimes sweet, usually an enriched dough. Like a hot dog bun or a burger bun, or a Chelsea bun, or brioche bun.

A roll might be soft or crusty, but it would be a plain yeast dough, not enriched with egg, and not sweet. You would put butter on a roll and perhaps use it to make a sandwich but you probably wouldn't with a bun.

A bap is just a roll that is soft and large and flat.

mrspaulhollywood · 25/04/2024 16:24

@HeadDeskHeadDesk I'm from the south coast and this is how I describe them too but didn't manage to explain it as well as you have here! I love all the regional variations!

@Bananadramallamas we are chatting about this in the office and someone else said that about PH too!
