What do you call a small round bread item?

Think Great British Bake Off GIF by PBS

What do you usually call the small round bread item sometimes known as roll / cob / bun etc? Comment if I've missed your option off the poll but I can only add 6 options!

Breadcake. And yes it is a sandwich if you slice it up, butter the insides and fill it with ham, despite someone on here claiming otherwise last week.

mrsm43s · 25/04/2024 16:35

Southerner.

Generally a bread roll, but if it's big and soft then it could be a bap, and if it's for a burger its a bun.

Helplessandheartbroke · 25/04/2024 16:36

@ManchesterBeatrice very surprised you call it a bun. Assuming you're in South Manchester?

Roll unless it's got seeds on it with a burger inside in which case it's a bun. Occasionally I use bap when purchasing breakfast to distinguish from a pastry sausage roll

idontlikealdi · 25/04/2024 16:40

Roll.
Muffins are for toasting.
Bun is only for a burger bun.

Bananadramallamas · 25/04/2024 16:41

All that said, I love "breadcake" it sounds so tasty, and I shall use it from now on.

SgtOliviaBenson · 25/04/2024 16:46

Barmcake, barms, cob (if crusty), roll.

Clawdy · 25/04/2024 16:50

Barm cake. Manchester.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/04/2024 16:51

A roll is not round, it is sausage shaped, like a bridge roll.

Why the need to have a specific word for 'bridge roll' then? To me, a roll is a small bread item of no specific shape (though usually round). A bridge roll is a sausage-shaped one.

Deipara · 25/04/2024 16:54

Barm.

WitchesWithKnivesInTheirFeet · 25/04/2024 16:57

It's a breadcake. But if I'm somewhere that doesn't know what a breadcake is, then I'll explain that it's a bread roll and hope they understand :)

White, fairly flat and very floury: Bap

brown or granary: roll

white fortified/sweet dough with a smooth brown finish: brioche

white with sesame seeds on top: bun

long and oblong ish rather than round: hot dog bun

SomethingIn · 25/04/2024 17:01

Roll or bun

Favouritefruits · 25/04/2024 17:06

It’s a Barm cake!

muddyford · 25/04/2024 17:06

Roll, bap, cob or muffin, depending on which it is.

StopGo · 25/04/2024 17:07

Locally a roll, at my dad's a Barm Cake, at my aunt's a Stottie Love all the regional variations.

dontmakeitaweproblem · 25/04/2024 17:09

Barm cake from Preston but now live in
North Tyneside and it's a stottie

Allotmenthelp · 25/04/2024 17:13

Breadcake - South Yorkshire.

Ontopofthesunset · 25/04/2024 17:14

I can't vote because I use most of those terms but they are for different things. I don't use barm or cob, though I have heard those names

Roll: a plain small round or shaped bit of bread. The most general term which would encompass many kinds of bread product
Bap: a particular type of large, flattish, very soft, floured roll
Bun: usually sweet, like a Chelsea bun, currant bun, Belgian bun, hot cross bun or cinnamon bun, but also used to refer to specific types of enriched sweetish rolls used for burgers and sausages (burger bun, hotdog bun - probably originally US usage)
Muffin: a particular type of small flat bread roll, not as soft as a bap, usually eaten sliced and toasted (not the same as American-style sweet muffins which are basically large fairy cakes).

I never use the words cob or barm cake. I wouldn't even know what they were. Buns and rolls are different things to me. A bun would be soft, sometimes sweet, usually an enriched dough. Like a hot dog bun or a burger bun, or a Chelsea bun, or brioche bun.

A roll might be soft or crusty, but it would be a plain yeast dough, not enriched with egg, and not sweet. You would put butter on a roll and perhaps use it to make a sandwich but you probably wouldn't with a bun.

A bap is just a roll that is soft and large and flat.

A muffin as in English muffin is absolutely nothing like a bread roll .

I feel if an alien was visiting Earth, this would be the definitive answer

asbigasablueberry · 25/04/2024 17:23

It's obviously a barm.
