Quick compter help - download from SharePoint?

Does anyone know how to download from SharePoint but from within a word document itself?

A colleague from a different organisation has shared a document with me. I can't access their SharePoint folder/area because they're in a different organisation. Clicking the link that they sent me sends me straight into the document.

But I need to download the document to work on.

Any ideas of how to do this? If I can at all?

Any help HUGELY appreciated -I've googled but all the instructions are for downloading from the main SharePoint folder, not from within a document itself.

If you are having to work on it, can they not download it and just send it to you?

OwwOwwLowFat · 25/04/2024 11:38

Can you right-click the link and save?

No, only saves link or HTML document, which is the same one that I can't download

I'd probably copy the whole lot into a new document if you can't get hold of it using sharepoint.

YouveGotAFastCar · 25/04/2024 11:41

I don't think you can, if you've only got access through an embedded link. You'd need folder access to have file privileges.

Or that's how it is set up where I work. It may vary depending on security set-up.

I sent it in Word format as a an attachment like a normal human being. She's sent it back as a SharePoint document like a maniac.

She's on maternity leave so has disappeared for another fortnight now and I need to work on it today. She was using a KIT day when she sent it over to me.

With the document open, go to file, save as, then save it on your desktop?

I was thinking this but it doesn't seem to copy comments which are the most important part 😩

Or go to editing, edit in app, and it should open in word.

This just brings up a page full of "Add-Ins" 😭

This is what I fear. Fuck my life.

You mean "editing" in the top right corner?

That just brings up this - no option to 'edit in app'

Yes, but whenever I do that it gives me the option to open in desktop app

Hmm. I was going to suggest the open in app option too - mine looks like this, I don't know why yours doesn't!

My save as menu looks like this, add ins are seperate, what does yours look like?

Can you just work on it online? It’s annoying but it does work.

Limth · 25/04/2024 11:50

When I press "File", this screen appears...

You need your colleague to give you editing rights.
It sound like you only have viewing rights

The new SharePoint is an absolutley ball ache for this

Yes and no.

I need to send on to someone else as an attachment.

So at some point I need to download it. I'd rather download now and then work on it in Word.

I think I'll have to work on it online and then copy/paste the whole document into a word file and add the comments separately. Fuck my life.

Can someone else in her organisation get to the location of the document?

No, it's on her personal SharePoint space. And I don't actually know anyone else in her organisation who I could ask anyway. 😭

Ooh, hang on. One drive might be the answer.

Go to office 365, and to your onedrive (not via file Explorer.)

Then on the left click 'shared' and then on the main pain at the top click 'with you'. Can you see the document there and click the 3 dots to download?

This is amazing detective work but when I click the three dots.... no option to download. Only this:
