What discounts - or even freebies - can you get at 60 ?

Reading this thread about being made to feel ancient, started me thinking about what advantages there were to being 60, now it is well below state pension age ?

Where I live, you can't get your bus pass until State Pension age.
I hear there is a 10% discount in Iceland one day a week and I think there is (or used to be) a discount in B&Q on one day.
What else have you (or your parents) found saves a few ££ once you turn 60, but aren't yet an official pensioner ?

Buying a bottle of cider in Lidl (the nice vintage one, I promise) and the checkout guy said to me, with a wink, "Well, young lady, I'm going to need...

Bus pass in Scotland. I think that Iceland's pensioner day is Tuesday...you need to get some kind of loyalty card to get the discount.

cardibach · 23/04/2024 19:53

Bus passes in Wales too

Ooh. that's exciting.
Is that all over the UK ?

(Perhaps we should say what Country we are in, as clearly some things are different - yup, bus passes for example. I am very jealous).

Not in Wales - they’re free anyway here.

Am secretly rather excited about that ASDA offer Blush

Senior Railcard for over 60s . It offers 1/3 off train fares.

Fifthtimelucky · 24/04/2024 12:32

Senior railcard.
National Trust membership
NHS prescriptions and eye tests.

I'm 63 and picked up a prescription recently (first time since turning 60). I was quite surprised that I no longer had to pay. In fact when I was asked whether I paid for prescriptions I said yes and then asked them to check!

I got excited by this, but can only use it off peak in London/SE 😢

Decorhate · 24/04/2024 13:09

Really annoyed that I also have to wait till state pension age for a bus pass. If I lived a few miles away I’d be in a London borough & could get one at 60.

KnittedCardi · 24/04/2024 13:10

Also National Trust only counts if you are already a member. Hmph. Sad times.

No London Freedom pass is state retirement age too. DH just turned 60 and he has bought an over-60s Oyster card which gives discounts until he is 67, but not free travel.

Age UK have a list https://www.ageukmobility.co.uk/mobility-news/article/the-best-discounts-for-over-60s

@KnittedCardi the national railcard does give you the discount on peak time trains. I’m in the SE and use it for peak time trains all the time.

Probs wrong part of SE!! Lucky you..... Definitely can't be used here.
