Do you prefer to be hungry or full?

Just that really.

Chatting to DH at the weekend after a massive meal about how much I hate feeling really full, and would much prefer to be hungry (within reason and by choice only, obv).

DH was shocked as he hates being hungry and is constantly striving to be full.

I know, know it’s a boring question, but I would like to know how others feel… 🤷🏼‍♀️

Well I don’t like feeling uncomfortably full but nicely full is definitely preferable to hungry!

lightinthebox · 22/04/2024 20:35

Being uncomfortably full isn’t pleasant.

But enjoying feeling hungry sounds like an eating disorder.

Weloveflowerss · 22/04/2024 20:35

Full full full, the fuller the better! I hate the feeling of being hungry

bakewellbride · 22/04/2024 20:36

I'm the same as u op

DuchesseNemours · 22/04/2024 20:36

Hungry - then it means I can eat something to fill up.

If I'm full, there's nothing to help me but time.

Pleasestopkickingme · 22/04/2024 20:40

I'm dieting at the moment and was pondering on this the other day. I've been hungry a lot recently due to eating fewer calories and at the weekend we had a much bigger dinner. Afterwards, I was uncomfortable and bloated. I felt rough for hours afterwards. When I'm hungry, I actually don't mind the feeling now. I spent years feeling uncomfortable with hunger and feeling as though I desperately had to do something about it. Now, I have a glass of water/diet soft drink and the feeling goes away. When I do feel hungry, I remember that it's not necessarily a bad thing and when the food does come, I'll be glad for it and I won't feel bloated and uncomfortable because I won't have been overeating.

StMarieforme · 22/04/2024 20:40

I can't bear the feeling of being hungry. Really can't concentrate if I am. But... I do not feel hunger in my stomach. I feel it in my throat and desperately need to swallow food to make the feeling go away. I do feel fullness in my stomach. Just not hunger.
No one ever believes me and it's part of my awful relationship with food.

Hiphopopotamonster · 22/04/2024 20:41

Hungry. Because I really really love food and when I’m hungry I have the opportunity to eat all the food. When I’m full it’s all over (until
im hungry again)

dudsville · 22/04/2024 20:42

I think I'm constantly veering between these two. I like walking and feeling neither hungry nor full, that's my favourite time of the day for this. Then i seem to like to feel full some time between 11 and about 3pm, after that feeling full starts to feel like an uncomfortable weight and i feel stupid if I've forgotten that. I would rather eat by my own schedule but so much social eating is of fatty things in the evening.

ThatshallotBaby · 22/04/2024 20:43

I actually think this is a really interesting question, out of the two I would choose hungry.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 22/04/2024 20:43

I love a good feed! But I'd rather be hungry than properly full. Although that feels quite disrespectful to those that are genuinely starving and hungry.

LauderSyme · 22/04/2024 20:44

Stuffed to the gills full like Mr Creosote and his wafer thin mint doesn't feel nice but gnawingly ravenous is worse.

I'd rather be moderately hungry than uncomfortably full, though.

ManchesterBeatrice · 22/04/2024 20:46

Slightly hungry/nothing.

Never too full.

FrenchandSaunders · 22/04/2024 20:47

Full … hunger scares me

Safxxx · 22/04/2024 20:47

In-between not hungry not too full..but just right 😜

Giveupnow · 22/04/2024 20:49

I don’t mind feeling mildly hungry, definitely prefer that to being full. However I quite quickly get hangry/ shaky/ stressed feeling which isn’t at all in my stomach area, but my heart beats faster and I feel shaky. Can’t stand that.

Comedycook · 22/04/2024 20:49

Sometimes I graze rather than eating full meals. I find that's often worse as you don't feel satisfied but also don't have the hungry feeling that means when you do eat you enjoy your food. You're just at a weird Inbetween level

Octavia64 · 22/04/2024 20:49

I cannot imagine enjoying hunger.

minipie · 22/04/2024 20:54

Being hungry right before you’re about to have a good meal is quite nice, like you know you’ll appreciate the meal. Otherwise agree, can’t imagine enjoying being hungry.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/04/2024 20:55

Uncomfortably full or hungry is, by definition, uncomfortable.

Many people mistake full with too full, and appetite with hunger.

I suppose we probably all have a point on the scale between starving and force fed full where we are most comfortable. Equally, probably each person has two points which are equally uncomfortable on both side. There's a bit in Good Omens (I think) where it talks about hunger, saying that most people in the West/Global North have never actually been hungry, just felt appetite. Real gnawing hunger is something very different.

ChampagneGold · 22/04/2024 21:26

I remember feeling hungry a lot as a kid.

Therefore As an adult I have a tendency to eat until I'm uncomfortably full.

Both are horrible feelings tbh!

Q124 · 22/04/2024 21:41

I love feeling hungry. I feel clean, not sure why. The feeling of being full makes me feel disgusting and dirty.
I also have a phobia of being sick and feeling too full makes me feel a bit sick so would always avoid that.

DatingDinosaur · 22/04/2024 22:08

Ooh, good question. During the day I like that 'ready for something to eat now' feeling but on an evening, after I've done all my chores for the day, I like that satiated after a meal feeling.

I hate that over-eaten stuffed full feeling but equally I hate that starving hungry feeling.

I have similar.

I feel very sick when I am hungry and I need to eat something to make it go away.

SnapdragonToadflax · 22/04/2024 22:42

I hate feeling uncomfortably full (to the point that it hurts), but I also hate feeling even moderately hungry because it's so distracting.

I've been trying to get back into intermittent fasting recently (partly to lose weight and partly because once I'm used to it I prefer eating that way). But I just can't ignore that 10.30am gnawing, slightly crazed feeling where I can't focus because I'm so hungry.

So on balance, I prefer being full.
