Do you prefer to be hungry or full?

Just that really.

Chatting to DH at the weekend after a massive meal about how much I hate feeling really full, and would much prefer to be hungry (within reason and by choice only, obv).

DH was shocked as he hates being hungry and is constantly striving to be full.

I know, know it’s a boring question, but I would like to know how others feel… 🤷🏼‍♀️

Just plain not hungry is fine for me. I don't like extremes.

Depends what I’m doing. If I’ve got a load of shit to get done then mildly hungry is better it spurs me on to finish and then I can have a sandwich or something. Full is nice but only if I don’t have to go charging about afterwards.

It's a question those with eating problems ask themself a lot. Being hungry does indeed release dopamine and time restricted eating has been shown to relieve some elements of depression.

I hate both feelings, when I'm hungry I feel dizzy, headachey and really irritable as well as feeling it in my stomach. But equally I hate feeling too full, I remember one Christmas in particular feeling as if I might burst and it was awful so I tend to just eat til I'm not hungry anymore and then stop. My ideal feeling is in between!

StMarieforme · 22/04/2024 23:10

@tiredandabitfat it's awful isn't it? I find it utterly unbearable at times. Sorry to hear you have the same thing. I'd love to see some research into in what causes it.

I'm dieting at the moment and was pondering on this the other day. I've been hungry a lot recently due to eating fewer calories and at the weekend we had a much bigger dinner. Afterwards, I was uncomfortable and bloated. I felt rough for hours afterwards. When I'm hungry, I actually don't mind the feeling now. I spent years feeling uncomfortable with hunger and feeling as though I desperately had to do something about it. Now, I have a glass of water/diet soft drink and the feeling goes away. When I do feel hungry, I remember that it's not necessarily a bad thing and when the food does come, I'll be glad for it and I won't feel bloated and uncomfortable because I won't have been overeating.

It's weird how you change when you're dieting isn't it? I've spent years almost fearing feeling hungry and much preferring to be full. Then you eat better and hate feeling full and bloated!

Full. Rather feel stuffed with lots of lovely food than hungry and irritable.

Surprised so many people would opt for hungry!

@StMarieforme are you able to burp?

I've never been able to burp, and never thought much of it, but I heard a while ago it is an actual, recognised condition. Something to do with the throat muscles in some people being unable to relax to let air up. It can be treated by Botox injections to the throat, apparently.

Could be totally unrelated, but thought I'd ask.

amicissimma · 23/04/2024 09:47

Definitely hungry. I like the feeling of anticipating eating something. And I hate, hate, hate feeling 'stuffed'.

I fast very occasionally (Water only. About 34 hours, ie. 24 plus sleep). Not for nutrition/diet reasons. I do get very weak as the day goes on, but the feeling of gnawing hunger passes fairly quickly.

Mammma91 · 23/04/2024 09:54

I can tolerate being hungry, I’d take that over being uncomfortably full. However I can’t stand that ‘staving’ feeling, where you feel nauseous because you’re so hungry and can’t concentrate. I think my happy medium is peckish.

Betterifido · 23/04/2024 09:56

I’d take hungry over uncomfortably full, but would rather be comfortably full over hungry

Soigneur · 23/04/2024 10:03

Neither. But I really dislike feeling stuffed full and have no problem with feeling hungry so if it was a binary choice I would go with the hunger any time. I quite like to go into stressful or challenging situations hungry, such as a big conference talk at work, or a concert performance (I’m an amateur musician). Gives you an edge I think.
