Huw Edwards Resignation

good96 · 22/04/2024 16:29

Huw Edwards has finally resigned from the BBC citing medical advice….

Thinking this could be a cover up for the BBC given that they would have had to publish his salary in July given that he received full pay during his suspension since July 2023.

It is a shame as he was a real good broadcaster but I don’t condone what he did.

What did he do?

Yerroblemom1923 · 31/07/2024 09:22

He's in court today.

sixtyandsomething · 31/07/2024 09:28

Anyone suspended should be on full pay

Charged with having possession of 37 images of child sexual abuse received on WhatsApp, with 6 being of the most serious kind. He's in court later.

Absolutely shocking

Another Jimmy Saville moment ... is there more to be revealed, I wonder

Yerroblemom1923 · 31/07/2024 12:20

He's pleaded guilty. Trial in Sept. I think we need to know who the other guy was and why was he sending these kind of images to Huw? How did they meet? Etc etc I guess we'll learn more in September.

Normallynumb · 31/07/2024 13:16

I can't see how they would have set a date for trial in a couple of months
Magistrates decided if it's within their jurisdiction first.
The type of crime he pled guilty to today carries a maximum sentence of 10 years
Which would be held at a crown court.
My guess is for MH reasons he will get a suspended sentence
Sickening obviously

There won't be a trial if he's pleaded guilty

This was a plea hearing only. As he pleaded guilty there is no trial. The hearing in September is for sentencing only which can happen much sooner because it takes less time, but there needs to be a pre sentence report prepared first for the judge to consider in reaching a decision.

Why is there a trial if he pleaded guilty? And so it doesn't really matter who the other guy was does it or how they met. The crime he committed is a crime regardless of those circumstances. I'm sure more details will be released over the coming months anyway.

Pedallleur · 31/07/2024 15:32

Won't be any details which is why he has avoided a trial. Prob a report from a Psychiatrist (private)to say Huw has addiction or my issues. He knew he was busted so better to avoid the trial and it's costs and take the hit

It really isn’t. Jimmy Saville was a monster. A vile, abusive predator who abused many many vulnerable children and adults.

Hugh Edwards is just a pathetic porn addled man who was sent some images of child abuse in among hundreds of others.
Disgusting, yes. Criminal yes.

Like Saville? No.

leeverarch · 31/07/2024 15:42

Resigned? They should have unceremoniously sacked him.

It says he made the images.

CP26 · 31/07/2024 15:47

It says he made the images.

That means opened them in WhatsApp.

It doesn’t mean he took a photograph. It means he received one.

There’s a big discussion on another thread, and the news article is quite specific in denying he in any way created them. He didn’t store them or save them. He received them. That’s all- which is enough.

CP26 · 31/07/2024 16:04

So you can be charged even if someone else sends you something illegal? Is it criminal because he didn’t report it?

InterestQ · 31/07/2024 16:09

Erm - comparing him to Jimmy Savile suggests that either you didn’t read the specifics of the charges in Huw Edward’s case or you know nothing at all about the Savile victims. The two are nothing like one another in any way. Not the crime in this case or the alleged many many crimes.

RedToothBrush · 31/07/2024 16:16

So he stayed on the payroll until he knew the police were investigating him and he was liable to be charged, so he couldn't be sacked. Meanwhile he got the payrise. He thought he could challenge the BBC at employment tribunal didn't he? Then realised that he was fucked. He should have resigned when the original scandal broke because he was in a position of influence. The fact he didn't speak volumes for his character. As does the fact he didn't report the abuse of children.

He was not a man of 'exceptionally good character'. Men of exceptionally good character don't do this.

CP26 · 31/07/2024 16:04

By not reporting it immediately he potentially allowed those children to be abused and groomed for longer.

He ‘possessed’ child abuse images by receiving those pictures.

He should have taken his phone straight to the police. And handled all that came next.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 31/07/2024 16:18

More realistically he should have gone to a lawyer and taken advice. Obviously, he couldn’t send the pictures to a lawyer for advice…

I’m sure there was a way out of this, but doing nothing was not it.

CP26 · 31/07/2024 16:19

@KeirSpoutsTwaddle yes totally agree. Just wanted clarity on the legality of it.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 31/07/2024 16:23

I think a hell of a lot of men are looking anxiously at their phones. As I understand it, lots of men have friend groups on WhatsApp swapping ‘dirty pictures’.

They’ll be wanting to rethink that, I hope.

Pedallleur · 31/07/2024 17:06

More on the news tonight. Surprisingly there is a convicted paedophile involved somewhere. Huw is going to be facing a bleak winter

Generally to receive those types of material, you have to send as well,to be trusted by other paedophiles.
