Where does the spare loo roll live?

A bit of a unspoken argument between DH and me about where to put the spare loo roll in the back bathroom. Well we have spoken about it but keep putting it where we think is better!

It's the small loo as you come into the house. We have a loo roll holder where the one in use lives. I put them on the windowsill, it is at about shoulder level beside the toilet, always dry (no shower in there so no condensation etc). He puts it on the shelf above the toilet.

His way, if you didn't notice the holder was empty you'd need to stand to get the spare roll over the toilet. Mine it is there beside you.

Also some regular guests (both our mums) can't reach that shelf.

Yes little to worry about in my life ( I do) - also WFH and I've no one to chat to about mundane things!

On the window sill is a bit student house, but it does sound more convenient than a shelf
We've either got those stick toilet roll holders that hold the spare rolls as well or they go in a cupboard.

frozendaisy · 22/04/2024 12:24

I would put on shelf, change for new roll just before other one runs out, put the last of the old roll on the shelf and I would use that for a couple of wees until tube empty.

CointreauVersial · 22/04/2024 12:28

Downstairs loo - basket on floor, next to loo
Family bathroom - in low alcove, next to loo
En suite bathroom - in basket on low shelf under basin

All can be reached from a seated position.

Here's an idea - put a spare roll in BOTH places! Wink

pontipinemum · 22/04/2024 12:35

@WildRosesForCathy I suppose it is a student.

I have a loo hold stick holder thing in the main bathroom. The small one is a bit of a dirty bathroom, DH is a farmer and that's where he goes in to clean his hands/ take off over all before coming into the rest of the house so unless the main bathroom is occupied I don't use it. I do clean it regularly, and do give it extra attention if I know we are having guests.

Maybe I'll get a funnel sort of holder where the going in a shoot so that it would be safe from mucky boots on the floor - I think if it was on a stick/ pole it would get dirty.

We have a 'stand' In the bathrooms with space... so they hold 3 or 4 rolls. In the smaller bathroom
They sit at the side of the loo... I usually have 2 or 3 there too... so in our house in total we will have 10 or 11 loo rolls out at any given time!

Now I read it that's ridiculous cos there's only 3 of us at home

We even keep spare spare loo rolls in the airing cupboard just in case!

AND bulk cases in the garage 😂😂😂😂

Josette77 · 22/04/2024 12:46

I have stand in one bathroom, and a basket on the back of the toilet in the other one.

I wouldn't use a window sill though.

RobinBobbin · 22/04/2024 12:47

Clean loo rolls at floor level give me the ick.

Downstairs loo, 2 spares are on a stick on the window ledge behind loo
Main bathroom, in a cupboard, but if we have visitors I'd pop one on the shelf or window ledge so it's visible.
En-suite, in a cupboard.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 22/04/2024 12:49

Just keep two spare loo rolls in there, one in each place and we can all relax and get on with our lives.

RobinBobbin · 22/04/2024 12:49

Packs are in the airing cupboard and being a mumsnetter I do have a loo roll of last resort hidden in my wardrobe!

pontipinemum · 22/04/2024 12:57

@RobinBobbin ick is the right word for them being on the floor in that bathroom especially, men in mucky (that's being polite) boots. They wouldn't be clean. We live on a farm.

@cardibach thank you, this is what I meant by a funnel!

I have mine in enclosed basket, which may or may not be obvious to visitors. So, I always leave one on top of cistern where guests can see it and use it if the other one runs out during "their sitting". 😀

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/04/2024 13:01

My brother bought me a cast iron frog with his leg in the air (that's the frog, not my brother, who walks perfectly normally). The spare rolls go over the leg, and the frog sits on a stool in front of the loo so the new roll is easily reached.

It's a bit of a waste, since I live alone and can stagger from room to room with my knickers round my knees if I need to, but I enjoy Frog's slightly lascivious grin. Plus, when the rolls are on, you can't see it's his leg and it looks as though the spare rolls are stacked on his massive erection. Which my brother hadn't noticed until I pointed it out...

pontipinemum · 22/04/2024 13:02

Do you think people would know this is where the spare loo roll is? Seems easy to keep clean in what I said is the "dirty bathroom"

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat 😂 please please post a photo of your frog, that is hilarious!

OP I feel your pain about filthy farmers, I have one in my house too! I would also go with the tongue and groove loo roll container by the loo and then safe from grotty boots and straw!

cardibach · 22/04/2024 13:07

I’d definitely have a look in there if I was caught short in your loo!

mitogoshi · 22/04/2024 13:07

I've got a spare loo roll holder in the downstairs loo, holds 3

EventuallyDecluttered · 22/04/2024 13:07

We have something similar to that blue one but white and with no lid. Keeps them tidy and off the floor.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 22/04/2024 13:08

I was going to say that traditionally the spare roll belongs underneath the skirts of crinoline wearing, or flamenco dancing doll. But when I googled for flamenco dancer toilet roll cover I found this on Amazon and am starting to think that I could save myself the bother of having to use a broom handle to knock the spare rolls down from the top of the tall cupboard in the bathroom if I installed this instead. Though some of the one star reviews are a bit worrisome.

I've got a white wicker basket for loo rolls next to the loo.

In the vanity unit under the sink along with Harpic toilet cleaning tablets and toilet cleaner. All hidden behind little closed behind doors.

DilemmaDelilah · 22/04/2024 13:42

My DH thinks the amount of spare loo rolls we have is ridiculous! Main bathroom - cupboard under the basin and in the storage area under the bath. En suite - in the cupboard under the basin and in some small open shelves next to the loo (raised up because on top of a boxed in bit over the waste pipe). Downstairs shower/loo/utility - in the cupboard under the basin AND in a shallow cupboard right next to the loo. Plus extra on the top shelf of the wardrobe and in a storage shed (not full of loo roll).
In your case - if you don't have a cupboard under the basin (maybe you could get one?) then I'm with your DH in keeping one on top of the cistern. The wooden cupboard thing looks good as well. With my propensity for having way way too much loo roll I would probably have some in a cupboard under the basin and in a wooden thingy next to the loo. And maybe on top of the cistern as well!
My aunt has a loo with a shelf above the door frame where spare loo rolls are kept. This is a useful use of space, so you could consider that AND on top of the cistern.

CosmosQueen · 22/04/2024 13:50

i have a holder with 5 spare rolls in the corner of the loo, plus one on the wall next to the toilet. The rest of the rolls are in the bottom of the airing cupboard.

😂Love this!
That’s absolutely where I’d like to live if I was a spare loo roll (now there’s a sentence I’d never thought I’d ever say 😆)
Mine’s boring though, under the sink vanity so nice and dry and cosy.
