What sandwiches would you expect on a buffet?

I'm hosting a get together next weekend and doing all of the food. I have many things on the menu but I need to do a couple of platters of sandwiches.
What would you do?
No veggies or dietary requirements just half the people are very fussy.
I want to do beef, rocket, horseradish and mozzarella tomato and pesto, new york deli etc as I am a good cook, put a lovely spread on and the thought of plain ham makes me puke tbh.
So what do the fussy guys expect?
Is it fair to do a platter as above and also a plain one, one slice of ham, beef or cheese only, no sauce, no salad?
Thanks
Ps im not English but all the fussy folk are so I'm not sure

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g yes absolutely. Plenty of other flavours masking the mayonnaise. It doesn't work when the mayo is used as a spread though, or when it is used to mix with chicken or tuna (for me anyway). Don't get me started on salad cream! Nasty vinegary/mustardy stuff - snot of the devil!

Can’t stand sloppy sandwiches so please make some of them mayo free

Or make ALL of them free of mayonnaise, but have a squeezy bottle of mayonnaise next to the platter for those who like it.

LMMuffet · 21/04/2024 11:15

I think your sandwiches sound delicious. I think that those on this thread saying they are too “rich” or sound horrible are weirdly fussy. But it is probably wise to cater for the weirdly fussy!

Anyway, I think you should make whatever you want and then do some boring plain sandwiches for fussy eaters. How about a make your own sandwich platter? Have some sliced buttered bread, slice up some cheddar, get some nice ham, some salad bits and then sauces in little pots - mayo, mustard, pickle/relish etc and then the fussy people can build their own to their own weird preferences!

No, I just like nice food and making nice food for others. I have no time for adults with limited diets by choice who have never tried anything more adventurous than salt and pepper

I'm a really great cook that entertains a lot. I also understand that some people, for whatever reason, only like very plain food, so I provide it for them. No need to fancy it up, that is your ego talking!

Plain food is 'nice' for some people.

(Also agree, loose the mozzarella, would love the beef and deli sandwiches though).

Newlychosencatservant · 21/04/2024 11:26

I'm not fussy and would eat your sandwiches but in my experience the following go down well.

Cheese and tomato (mature cheddar) or a cheese savoury (grated cheese, mayo, red onion mixed together)
Egg mayonnaise seasoned with salt and pepper. Decent butter.

Chicken mayonnaise.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 21/04/2024 11:42

Keep it simple is best bet with at least one veggie and one meat.

Cheese
Ham salad
Egg mayo
Tuna mayo
Chicken salad

Sandwich station is the best idea. Put plenty of knives out just for this!

Platter with slices of bread, rolls etc.

Butter.

Things that can be added to jazz up a sandwich, e.g. chutney, mustard, horseradish.

Ready sliced cucumber? Shredded lettuce? I wouldn't put out sliced tomato, personally, as it goes soggy very quickly. I love tomato in a sandwich but only if it was sliced immediately before going on the bread, and it needs plenty of salt and pepper too.

Slices of ham, maybe other meats.

Bowl of egg mayo, maybe with cress already in it.

Bowl of tuna mayo, perhaps with some finely chopped red or spring onion (no sweetcorn for me, it's my least favourite vegetable).

Slices of bog standard Cheddar - I surmise your fussy guests wouldn't be keen on extra mature Cheddar or Wensleydale.

You could still have a separate platter of ready-made fancier sandwiches if you think it's needed. I like the sound of both your ideas, but then if the eaters of Britain were to be lined up in order of fussiness I'd be in the top 100 at the unfussy end. I'll eat almost anything.

I agree with this the idea of being a good host is to make your guests happy no matter how fussy they are . You need a sandwich station .
That way you will be remembered as someone who goes out of her way to make the guests happy rather than herself .

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/04/2024 11:52

Anything like this and l always hunt down Coronation chicken over everything else.

Cheese/ham and tomato. Egg and cress. Cucumber,

Don’t like horseradish, or pesto in sandwiches. Or onion.

FollowTheFuckingInstructions · 21/04/2024 11:53

I wouldn't be doing prawn/lobster if it's sitting around in a warm room.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/04/2024 11:58

Agree on that point. I love prawns but I don't take risks with them.

DoreenonTill8 · 20/04/2024 23:16

Yes this, you sound rather derogatory with calling them fussy and that serving plain ham would make you 'puke' why? Are you just considerably better than them?

This.

you are being so full of yourself & so nasty about your guests

I wouldn't want to come

Other people like nice food, their idea of nice differs to yours, it doesn't make you right and them fussy.

Bjorkdidit · 21/04/2024 12:10

I think the OPs point is she wants to serve them something special, that looks like she's made an effort.

Plain ham in plastic white bread is a bit embarrassing to serve to guests, like you couldn't be bothered.

And what would you do for the mayo-free option? Not everyone likes mayo

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 21/04/2024 12:24

I hate mayo, mustard, salad cream etc so for me cheese, cheese and tomato, cheese and ham, blt, boiled egg etc

OMGitsnotgood · 21/04/2024 12:24

I love cooking but will always ensure guests with more limited palates are catered for without judgement. I think you need to provide plain ham. I love Coronation chicken sandwiches, might be another option? Or just chopped chicken and mayo.

FWIW I love food and am not at all fussy but personally wouldn't pick up a mozzarella tomato and pesto, sandwich.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 21/04/2024 12:27

I'm fussy so i wouldn't eat any of those sandwiches.
I would eat chicken mayo with lettuce, cheese, cheese and pickle, egg mayo, tuna crunch, chicken tikka with lettuce and onion

VJBR · 21/04/2024 13:11

Janniss543 · 20/04/2024 23:12

The fussy people

  1. No cheese, no sauce, no brown bread, no veg, no spice,
  2. No cheese, no spice or sauce, no egg
  3. No sauce, no spice
  4. No dairy by choice, no allergy just doesn't like it, also likely anorexic so host of other issues at play.
  5. Only meat they eat is chicken, picks everything apart for 10 minute before eating. Also no egg
  6. Watches sister above #4 and emulates
  7. None of the above eat fish so tuna out, not sure
Also have to consider the above with my general menu. I thought sandwiches would be a safe go to, at least get some food in them .

The thought behind the sandwich choices are that they are served at my local cafe and are stunning, even the mozzarella one, thought it Sounded grim too until I ate it.

I might just do a super plain platter, literally bread, ham, bread. Bread, cheese, bread etc

And a plate of fries, no salt

Bread and dripping then.
