What sandwiches would you expect on a buffet?

Janniss543 · 20/04/2024 22:29

I'm hosting a get together next weekend and doing all of the food. I have many things on the menu but I need to do a couple of platters of sandwiches.
What would you do?
No veggies or dietary requirements just half the people are very fussy.
I want to do beef, rocket, horseradish and mozzarella tomato and pesto, new york deli etc as I am a good cook, put a lovely spread on and the thought of plain ham makes me puke tbh.
So what do the fussy guys expect?
Is it fair to do a platter as above and also a plain one, one slice of ham, beef or cheese only, no sauce, no salad?
Thanks
Ps im not English but all the fussy folk are so I'm not sure

No crusts on bread.
Lobster rolls with lemon mayo.
Chicken salad sandwiches.
Chopped egg with celery and mayo.
Black forest ham with swiss cheese.

You can't beat a cheese savory - grated extra mature cheddar, diced red pepper and some form of diced onion (shallot, yellow, red, spring any will work) then a healthy grind of pepper, pinch of salt and bring it all together with a dollop of mayo.

You see it is so subjective, I love a cheese sarnie but these cheese sandwich filler things you are describing just remind me of vomit

hellsbells99 · 20/04/2024 23:00

I would just do French bread with a platter of sliced ham, cheese and chicken for people to help themselves

No point even asking, OP! Honestly. If I'm going to eat a sandwich, I want it as elaborate as possible. I'd totally turn my nose up at plain cheese or egg, unless it was teatime and I hadn't eaten all day. And I like mayo, but loathe butter or anything butterish on bread. I don't know if my brand of fussiness is more or less common than the plainer variety, but either way, there's no point taking it into account.

BirtyDird · 20/04/2024 23:05

You could do 2 platters, one with the fancier sandwiches, and then another with the plain options.

Typically I would expect to see atleast one meat and one veggi option.

I like the sound of yours, but I'd be equally happy with a simple one like egg mayo, cheese and pickle, ham etc.

Janniss543 · 20/04/2024 23:12

The fussy people

  1. No cheese, no sauce, no brown bread, no veg, no spice,
  2. No cheese, no spice or sauce, no egg
  3. No sauce, no spice
  4. No dairy by choice, no allergy just doesn't like it, also likely anorexic so host of other issues at play.
  5. Only meat they eat is chicken, picks everything apart for 10 minute before eating. Also no egg
  6. Watches sister above #4 and emulates
  7. None of the above eat fish so tuna out, not sure
Also have to consider the above with my general menu. I thought sandwiches would be a safe go to, at least get some food in them .

The thought behind the sandwich choices are that they are served at my local cafe and are stunning, even the mozzarella one, thought it Sounded grim too until I ate it.

I might just do a super plain platter, literally bread, ham, bread. Bread, cheese, bread etc

And a plate of fries, no salt

That's nice, but the point of hosting is to give your guests food they will eat and enjoy - not what you will enjoy making the most.

It won't be a lovely spread to them if they don't want to eat any of it.

Yes this, you sound rather derogatory with calling them fussy and that serving plain ham would make you 'puke' why? Are you just considerably better than them?

Janniss543 · 20/04/2024 23:19

No, I just like nice food and making nice food for others. I have no time for adults with limited diets by choice who have never tried anything more adventurous than salt and pepper

Just saw this about your 'friend' with anorexia at least get some food in them
Honestly leave them alone, it's not that simple.

Then why socialise with them?

Vanillalime · 20/04/2024 23:23

I don’t have a limited palate but honestly the best buffets for me have tuna, egg, & cheese savoury sandwiches. Sausage rolls, cheese & pickles on a stick, quiche, tuna pasta, chicken pakora. Heaven!!

Janniss543 · 20/04/2024 23:25

It is not a 'friend' she is a close relative. I said likely anorexiac which I base on constantly changing food fads which change like the wind. I want to have food there for her to easily choose should a new dislike arise, not only for her but also her sister who eats exactly the same when she is there but is seemingly fine when dining without her sister.

Put a basket of bread and rolls out with different filings and let them please themselves. Job done. I honestly wouldn’t be arsed with this fussiness. What age are these people?

OP, your sandwich choices sound lovely - particularly the one with the mozzarella. I normally struggle with sandwich buffets as I really dislike mayo, chicken and chutney.

In your shoes, I'd be tempted to get some nice salady bits, posh bread, cheeses, ham, chips and assorted condiments and do self- assembly sandwiches.

pizzaHeart · 20/04/2024 23:29

I would serve a spread of bread, butter, ham, cheese, vegs ( e.g sliced tomatoes, celery, cucumber and carrot sticks) and then people will go and help themselves. It’s much safer than sandwiches and simpler, unless you are ordering sandwiches from somewhere.

Bodyshame1980 · 20/04/2024 23:29

egg mayo, tuna sweetcorn and plain cheddar. The food of gods.

Adults, 25+
One side of the family eat anything, honestly anything and the other is fussy. It is Learned behaviour which is why I have no time for it

For goodness sake, can you please tell us how many people you’re catering for? If this is based around 2 people don’t bother - they clearly have issues around food and whatever you put on they’ll probably not eat. Their eating choices aren’t your issue, they’ll survive one buffet.

Cross posted, I’ve just seen your reply. Apologies for that.

Janniss543 · 20/04/2024 23:30

Self assembly sounds good actually, never heard of that before, thank you

Edited

There are about 22 people, most eat anything but one side of the family literally live on sausage and chips, egg and chips, sausage and mash, pie and chips, full English ad infinitum. So fussy but have never eaten anything else, seeing even try it

Can’t stand sloppy sandwiches so please make some of them mayo free

Agree!

bluetopazlove · 20/04/2024 23:45

RadoxMoon · 20/04/2024 22:38

I’d just do one platter of very plain sandwiches (ham, cheese and ham & cheese) with no mayo or sauces and then the fancy platter that you want to do.

Yes I agree do a platter of plain sandwiches or let them add the sauces themselves .

ShowOfHands · 20/04/2024 23:46

Mozzarella is lovely in a sandwich. Particularly with pesto, rocket and tomato. Even better in a wrap.

I love a fancy sandwich but actually, quality ingredients are what makes a good sandwich. Beef and a very sharp horseradish is a classic. Cheese and chutney can be good if it's a good cheese, interesting chutney and decent bread. I like most sandwiches tbh. I'd go fancy and then just do a few very plain options.

ludicrouslycapaciousbags · 20/04/2024 23:50

Is it your side of the family who are fussy?
