What sandwiches would you expect on a buffet?

I'm hosting a get together next weekend and doing all of the food. I have many things on the menu but I need to do a couple of platters of sandwiches.
What would you do?
No veggies or dietary requirements just half the people are very fussy.
I want to do beef, rocket, horseradish and mozzarella tomato and pesto, new york deli etc as I am a good cook, put a lovely spread on and the thought of plain ham makes me puke tbh.
So what do the fussy guys expect?
Is it fair to do a platter as above and also a plain one, one slice of ham, beef or cheese only, no sauce, no salad?
Thanks
Ps im not English but all the fussy folk are so I'm not sure

I would do a basic tuna mayo cucumber, a ham and tomato, salmon and cream cheese if budget allows. Coronation chicken is my favourite

One thing I find works really well for self assembly sandwiches for people with a very... traditional...British palate is to roast a gammon joint and serve it sliced hot with mustard available for any slightly adventurous types and some nice bread rolls. Someone will almost inevitably ask for ketchup. It's not a reflection in your cooking (one of my exH's relatives once accused me of risking poisoning her kids because I didn't wash bell peppers a second time after washing, cutting in half and dr-seeding them and "don't you know the seeds are poisonous?", so I sympathise).

I couldn't eat any of those.

Plain ham.
Plain cheese.
Maybe egg mayo

I am not sure why plain ham would make you "puke" . If people are "fussy" then either do as a PP suggested , and I think you , put out some nice cheese and ham and rolls or just do some plain sandwiches with just cheese and just ham or indeed chicken if they like that. I don't think hosting a get together is the time to try to educate people on their palate , just make something you know they will eat and enjoy. I can see you want a "nice spread" but surely being a good host is making sure everyone has something they will eat . Your sandwiches sound lovely I have to say .

ohsoverrrrytired · 21/04/2024 00:44

Sometimes you truly can't beat decent deli ham sarnie with proper butter - they always seem
to disappear first whenever I've done parties! Tuna and egg mayo are always winners as well.

Penguinsa · 21/04/2024 00:53

I would do plainer sandwiches, a lot of people don't like horseradish or pesto. What you could do is some nice breads including white, butter, plate of cheeses like cheddar, brie, blue cheese, plate of ham, maybe plate of smoked salmon and then plate with some chutneys, onion, apple, grapes can add.

Icehockeyflowers · 21/04/2024 01:11

As most of their criteria says 'no sauce', please forget about adding mayo and pesto to everything. Mozzarella is also a strange addition to cold sandwiches.

I am not a fan of sandwiches and would leave them all behind.

Honestly, just leave crusty rolls and fillings out and let people help themselves.

echt · 21/04/2024 01:32

Please don't allow self assembly. People are unbelievably filthy. If you don't believe me, put bar soap in your bathroom and see how dry it is at the end of the day.

Your work will be cut out trying to avert your gaze from those who peel back the bread to inspect the fillings then putting it back on the pile.

pelotonaddiction · 21/04/2024 01:39

Could you do plain but with stuff to add?
So (naice) ham but have some pickle and mustard available and salad

Koptforitagain · 21/04/2024 01:41

Salmon and cucumber, tuna red onion and Mayo, egg cress and Mayo,

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/04/2024 01:44

I once went to a friend's and they had a sandwich station. Loads of different types of rolls and lots of fillings, salads, sauces - like an artisan subway!

PerspicaciaTick · 21/04/2024 02:41

I like sandwiches and enjoy interesting fillings. But not for a buffet.
When faced with buffet sandwiches, I choose vegetarian options, minimal mayo and I like them to be labelled.
Sandwiches tend to get sad quickly in a buffet situation. Personally, I wouldn't bother.

Sunshineboo · 21/04/2024 04:23

one of the nicest buffets is to have some
really nice bread, lovely salted butter, couple
of cheeses, some deli ham, a bowl
of salad, selection of pickle's and mayo- then let people make their own...

sashh · 21/04/2024 04:46

Do some plain cheddar and some plain ham and some plain beef, but have mayo, mustard, etc on the side. With maybe some coleslaw and potato salad.

Put some plain crisps with them.

I'm not a fussy eater but some of the suggestions up thread would have me going hungry.

upinclouds · 21/04/2024 06:26

FrazzledHippy · 20/04/2024 22:41

You can't beat a cheese savory - grated extra mature cheddar, diced red pepper and some form of diced onion (shallot, yellow, red, spring any will work) then a healthy grind of pepper, pinch of salt and bring it all together with a dollop of mayo.

I'm convinced my mum invented the cheese savoury! Making sandwiches for a party in the late 70's and she decided to try and do something more exciting so grated onion and carrot in with the cheese and added salad cream.

Everyone who came to the party loved them and asked what the mixture was...and the legend continued!

Sunnnybunny72 · 21/04/2024 06:40

Not horseradish

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/04/2024 06:42

Imo, puking at the idea of plain ham, or saying you wouldn't eat boring cheese or egg sandwiches unless you were starving is just as fussy as preferring fairly plain sandwiches!

I'd do your suggestions, plus some more pedestrian fillings. Ham and chutney, cheese and cucumber/onion, egg mayonnaise. I don't see what the problem with egg or tuna is tbh. They are popular choices.

PuttingDownRoots · 21/04/2024 06:45

Its a lot easier for someone to add their own condiments and salad to a sandwich than it is for someone to remove them.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/04/2024 06:50

Sandwich station is the best idea. Put plenty of knives out just for this!

Platter with slices of bread, rolls etc.

Butter.

Things that can be added to jazz up a sandwich, e.g. chutney, mustard, horseradish.

Ready sliced cucumber? Shredded lettuce? I wouldn't put out sliced tomato, personally, as it goes soggy very quickly. I love tomato in a sandwich but only if it was sliced immediately before going on the bread, and it needs plenty of salt and pepper too.

Slices of ham, maybe other meats.

Bowl of egg mayo, maybe with cress already in it.

Bowl of tuna mayo, perhaps with some finely chopped red or spring onion (no sweetcorn for me, it's my least favourite vegetable).

Slices of bog standard Cheddar - I surmise your fussy guests wouldn't be keen on extra mature Cheddar or Wensleydale.

You could still have a separate platter of ready-made fancier sandwiches if you think it's needed. I like the sound of both your ideas, but then if the eaters of Britain were to be lined up in order of fussiness I'd be in the top 100 at the unfussy end. I'll eat almost anything.

ICanFixHim · 21/04/2024 07:32

I agree with a basket of white and brown rolls and then people help themselves. Rolls are nicer than sliced bread too.

Cheese, meats (beef, ham, chicken) and butter and condiments.

It's much easier.

I'm not fussy but hate horseradish for example so couldn't eat your beef sandwich even though I love beef.

Sorry but this just sounds messy and chaotic to me with loads of things sat around that don't sit around well, sliced bread, sliced cheese, egg, chopped salad veg etc. I'd make your sandwich choices and go with them. Maybe condiments to add.

Fuckstix · 21/04/2024 07:39

People will eat what's there, generally. Few people are that fussy they'll demur at a cheese sandwich. I'd just say it please use butter, not mayonnaise (unless as part of the filling)

EventuallyDecluttered · 21/04/2024 07:42

GracefulGrandma · 20/04/2024 22:48

I would like the following-

beef and horseradish
smoked salmon and cream cheese
cheddar with pickle
prawn mayonaise
egg mayo

And plain cheese for the fussy 😂

This would be my choice too. I'd eat your fancier ones (there aren't many sandwiches I don't like just anything with onion in) but these are classics for good reason. But given your list of the guests requirements I'd go self assembly.

patchworkpal · 21/04/2024 07:44

Janniss543 · 20/04/2024 23:12

The fussy people

  1. No cheese, no sauce, no brown bread, no veg, no spice,
  2. No cheese, no spice or sauce, no egg
  3. No sauce, no spice
  4. No dairy by choice, no allergy just doesn't like it, also likely anorexic so host of other issues at play.
  5. Only meat they eat is chicken, picks everything apart for 10 minute before eating. Also no egg
  6. Watches sister above #4 and emulates
  7. None of the above eat fish so tuna out, not sure
Also have to consider the above with my general menu. I thought sandwiches would be a safe go to, at least get some food in them .

The thought behind the sandwich choices are that they are served at my local cafe and are stunning, even the mozzarella one, thought it Sounded grim too until I ate it.

I might just do a super plain platter, literally bread, ham, bread. Bread, cheese, bread etc

And a plate of fries, no salt

Oh gosh. OK

Yeah ham (& chicken) and cheese it is then

MissingMoominMamma · 21/04/2024 07:47

patchworkpal · 20/04/2024 22:51

What I expect on a buffet:
Cheese
Ham or possibly ham & cheese
Egg mayonnaise
The above possibly with token rocket or something.
Salmon & Cream Cheese.
Possibly coronation chicken
Possibly prawn cocktail

What I LOVE in a buffet:
Something different!

No one wants tuna, onion or even egg mayonnaise as it smells and egg can cause some people to fart

My favourite sandwiches are tuna and egg mayonnaise! 😁
