Miss Mary Mac, Mac, Mac,
All dressed in black, black, black,
With silver buttons, buttons, buttons,
All down her back, back, back.
She asked her mother, mother, mother,
For fifty pence, pence, pence,
To watch the boys, boys, boys,
Climb up the fence, fence, fence.
They climbed so high, high, high,
They reached the sky, sky, sky,
They didn't come down, down, down,
'Till the fourth of July, July, July.
Our headmistress hated this song: because it was the boys climbing the fence, and not the girls. This was a pet hate of hers, especially in the ancient reading books we had: it was always the boys out having the good time, while the girls were at home helping Mother. It annoyed her so much, she used to make us swap the boys' and girls' names when we read these books.
