Mr Gasp is just running through a few of those on Spotify.

So far we've had:

Right Said Fred (made me sad, hearing dear Bernard Cribbins Sad)
Nelly the Elephant
Loving you has made me bananas
Run Rabbit Run

I'm hoping for A Windmill in Old Amsterdam soon.

Any other suggestions?

Miss Mary Mac, Mac, Mac,
All dressed in black, black, black,
With silver buttons, buttons, buttons,
All down her back, back, back.
She asked her mother, mother, mother,
For fifty pence, pence, pence,
To watch the boys, boys, boys,
Climb up the fence, fence, fence.
They climbed so high, high, high,
They reached the sky, sky, sky,
They didn't come down, down, down,
'Till the fourth of July, July, July.

Our headmistress hated this song: because it was the boys climbing the fence, and not the girls. This was a pet hate of hers, especially in the ancient reading books we had: it was always the boys out having the good time, while the girls were at home helping Mother. It annoyed her so much, she used to make us swap the boys' and girls' names when we read these books.

Happy birthday to you,
I went to the zoo.
I saw a fat monkey,
and I thought it was you!

My friend and I used to sing the zoo one as 'We're all going to the loo tomorrow' - as little kids, we thought that was the height of wit,

😂😂

Frankie Howard did a song about a fish that swam over the dam, he made lots of weird noises as sound effects. I think the fish got eaten by either a shark or a bigger fish.

Also, How Much is that Doggie in the Window.

😆

Allan Sherman.

I remember both those songs really well from Junior Choice with Ed Stewart, "Stewpot". Heard them pretty much every week.😀

fancyfrogs · 22/04/2024 08:53

I like Rolf Harris's songs - Jake the peg, court of king caractacus, two little boys, tie me kangaroo down sport
Obviously not the best person to have children listening to these days but I did like the music

BouleDeSuif · 22/04/2024 09:08

And:
123, mother caught a flea
She put him in the teapot to make a cup of tea, the flea jumped out, mother gave a shout, in came a policeman with his shirt hanging out.

There was this skipping rhyme:

Down by the river, down by the sea,
Johnny broke a bottle and blamed it on me.
I told ma, ma told pa,
Johnny got a spanking, so ha ha ha!
How many spanks did Johnny get?
One, two, three...

I’ve remembered another - The National Anthem of the Ancient Britons. It’s another one my dad used to sing to us - though just parts of it.

MargaretThursday · 05/05/2024 22:35

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius Mum used to sing that one, with slight variation. I taught my friends when the school choir was singing Men of Harlick much to their amusement 🤣

nanib5345 · 02/12/2024 12:56

Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep!

Letstheriveranswer · 02/12/2024 13:05

Do your ears hang low?
Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you throw them over your shoulder like a continental soldier?
Do your ears hang low?

RenoDakota · 02/12/2024 17:54

Lovely thread. I agree with most of these.
Anneka Rice will probably play many of these on Junior Choice on Radio 2 on Christmas Day, 10am!

And also love it that a pp mentioned La Mer by Stilgoe and Skellern. Had a big crush on Peter Skellern for years, because of his song You're A Lady.

Just realised that this is an old thread and I already commented on it in April 🙂
