Thread 13 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 12).

Looks like spring has sprung! Tulips, apple blossom and early hay fever are upon us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm, because "something something 'til May is out". The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Just delurking re: the alarms. I had this issue with my alarms last year - they will go off like that when the alarm itself needs replacing - not just the battery. They have a lifetime of around 10 years, then the entire unit needs to be changed.

They go off at 3am ish, as that is the coldest time of the day, when they are struggling to draw power. I had a looong time to work out what was going on as our communal alarms were triggering mine (linked system).

Ah, shit shit shit shit. I expect they're somewhat older than 10 years, because we've been in this house for 8 years and they didn't look new when we moved in. They're mains wired too. Does that mean I need a Mannin? I hate getting a Mannin.

Kuc, it depends on your alarm type. They should be able to be removed easily, then add a new one to the base plate. Look here to check against your type of alarm:

I found the right ones very easily and then bought replacements in my local B&Q, though Amazon also stock. It was easily done, there are lots of videos on Youtube for each model. I am not a natural DIYer, and I found it very straightforward.

Dender · 24/05/2024 09:21

Mine were mains wired too, but the basic plate stays in place. The unit just swaps over, do no need for a Mannin.

DeanElderberry · 24/05/2024 09:31

My alarm is almost new - bought and installed since Christmas, when I was 'alarmed' to discover that the previous one had died, presumably of old age.

Gonners · 24/05/2024 09:44

Ours aren't mains-wired, just shoved on the ceiling by a handsome, burly fireman, while another (ditto, with the addition of charm) gave us the safety talk. We were told to call them back in about 10 years, when the batteries start to beep. I don't know if other areas do this, but in Kent the fire brigade supplies and fits them free if you've got someone over 70 living in the house.

Bloody hell! Bit of an overreaction

It was clumsiness and 3 am fog!

VictorianBigot · 24/05/2024 09:52

Mine is mains wired and a total palaver to get on and off the ceiling.

@Kucinghitam I feel the same. And neither party gives a fuck about the environment or climate change.

Kucinghitam · 24/05/2024 10:12

Thanks @Dender, I've Google image-searched my alarms and they're discontinued - I'm still reading through the replacement options to see if any of the newer versions will fit on the old base plates.

I think on balance Labour will be better, or at least mostly not actively evil. But the women's rights thing worries me, and when you think that Labour has never had a female leader (OK, Margaret Beckett was interim), I think that tells you a lot about the party and its priorities. And their treatment of Rosie Duffield is and has been utterly shameful. KS owes her at the very least a sit down meeting and an apology.

duc748 · 24/05/2024 12:45

He won't do that; if he was going to, he'd have done it by now. Scared of losing the yoof vote, he thinks.

artant · 24/05/2024 13:05

There’s no easy fix to the mess the country is in and it’s awful that “mostly not actively evil” is the best we can hope for but at this point even that feels like a start. This government has been so corrupt in its lining the pockets of its already wealthy friends with money the rest of us can ill afford to do without. We need to be rid of it ASAP.

SqueakyDinosaur · 24/05/2024 13:06

And it really annoys me that because I, and others like me, are the grown-ups in the electorate, he's probably taken the (correct) decision that he's more likely to lose the blue-haired mob's votes than the middle-aged GC peeps.

Gonners · 24/05/2024 13:18

I wonder if Rosie Duffield will be re-elected. On the bright side, I assume the Canterbury students (who voted her in in the first place) will mostly be gone by 4th July and too idle to come back to vote against her. And she does seem quite popular locally. However, I see the SDP are fielding a candidate - an economics lecturer from the university - which may spoil things.

SinnerBoy · 24/05/2024 15:09

She's my cousin's MP and my cousin likes her. She's a sensible primary school teacher. Duffield has a majority and increased her vote, so I'm hopeful that she'll retain her seat.

Anyway, something has warmed the cockles of my curmudgeonly heart.

On the way to school, I saw a 21 plate Porsche, parked on double yellow lines and very close to a pedestrian crossing. I tutted and rolled my eyes. On the way back, I was pleased to see that it had a parking ticket.

I am waiting for my girl to come out. On the walk here, I was even more pleased to see it has been clamped, with a big sticker saying it's got no tax on it! Ha ha!

Kucinghitam · 24/05/2024 15:23

I totally agree with everyone, that at least Labour won't make things worse in the same way that the Tories seem hellbent on doing. Doesn't help me with my electoral choice though, as my MP is one of the featured stars of the infamous thread of Labour politicians:

Mine too. I’ll still vote Labour though. We need a change of government.

Looking at those comments again and the smug faces of those MPs, I can't bring myself to vote Labour.

Exactly. Especially those fuckers, like my MP, who specifically instructed Bad People like me not to vote for him.

Fuck him, he doesn't deserve your vote.

The only choice here is a little Tory weasel who doesn't seem to do anything and doesn't even shows his face around town, I can't bring myself to vote for him either.

MouseMinge · 24/05/2024 19:11

If there is no one you can bring yourself to vote for then it's time to spoil your ballot.

My take on this election is that at least I know I won't be fooled again. Back in 1997 I remember being full of joy because at last, at last! My then boyfriend was not so sure. He was right and I was SO wrong. This time around we're not even getting some of the quite good bits of 1997. It will be pretty shit but far less shit than it currently is. In terms of gender identity I don't think that Labour are the worry that they were. The Cass report definitely took the wind out of the sails of the commited halfwits and it made the ones with no conviction pretend that they thought women were women all along. I don't think it's going to be a big issue. The only real problem will be them not doing enough, not them going full speed ahead with insanity.

They won't stop privatising the NHS, they will pay lip service to workers, they will be Tory lite, I will take great pleasure in seeing Jeremy Corbyn winning in Islington as an independent. I will be so glad when this bullshit is over because it is pile of shite encrusted cocks in a barrel of vomit. I'm glad we're finally getting the election out of the way because it has to happen. I'll be more glad when it's over. I have no doubt that things will change a bit but not a lot and we'll all be depressed about the state of the country in a couple of months but less so than if we still had a Conservative government. There are no good choices for us so we spoil our ballot or we go for the least worse choice.

artant · 24/05/2024 19:31

Yes, this is not a 1997 style moment of optimism but nonetheless change is needed and I think some good we’ll come if it as well as a lot of things still falling apart but not quite as quickly (and post-Cass I think things aren’t looking as bad on the gender identity front).

I see that we are to be denied one of the possible Portlillo moments by Gove standing down though.

duc748 · 24/05/2024 19:52

I think we are peas in a pod on our view of UK politics, Mouse! Hopefully Labour have been constrained by the reality of the post-Cass climate, but their mutterings, even in the last day or so, still give cause for concern. But I will have no qualms in not voting Labour in my constituency.
