Just 2

Everyone over about 20 has one. Even friends and kids.
At work, we have a team of lads in their 20s/30s and of 12 of them, only 4 of them drive and they are all recently incoming to the UK. None of the English guys do. They drive bikes. Some of them get dropped off by their teenage girlfriends in their fiat 500s. Never thought about it before 😲

dingdongdoo89 · 16/04/2024 22:27

Only me who actively drives! DM no, siblings all London based so either no licences or haven't driven in 30 years. DF did put no longer with us. So it's all on me for get togethers

franfawl · 16/04/2024 22:28

5 out of extended family. We have 3 adults and 2 dcs in our household and no one drives. My 2 sisters don't and my older nephew doesn't. We all live in zone 1 London so cars are rarely used even if they have a licence. In my household, two of the adults have disability Freedom Passes (means free travel all day throughout London on almost all routes) and all dcs travel for free on public transport in London, so we only ever pay for one adult, so the cost of using a car would always be more expensive.

It must be a geographical thing near us because we have several non drivers in our work team. I’m the only one amongst the non drivers who actually did learn to drive but no longer drives.

FrangipaniBlue · 16/04/2024 22:35

Genuinely don't think I know any one of driving age who DOESNT have a driving licence.

Badbadbunny · 16/04/2024 22:45

Everyone except my mother in law. And she had her husband to ferry her around until he died, now she barely leaves the house and complains bitterly that she can’t drive!

Our son had his first driving lesson on his 17 th birthday and passed 4 months later. All his school friends drive.

jaundicedoutlook · 16/04/2024 22:52

I’m going to take the risk of being called out as a pedant, but two of us have driving licences. Americans have drivers’ licenses.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 16/04/2024 22:58

Everyone in the extended family over 17 can drive.

I only know one person who doesn’t drive and she is a widow, 85 and told me that her husband wouldn’t let her. She wanted to.

EconomyClassRockstar · 16/04/2024 22:59

Everyone, including my Mum who can't actually drive anymore!

DiscoBeat · 16/04/2024 23:02

The only adult in my family who doesn't drive is my mum, who spectacularly managed to end her 2nd driving lesson with the car upside down. She hasn't entered the driver's side since.

mermaidin · 16/04/2024 23:41

Most adults I know have a license but only half have a car. It's not necessary in London and parking a nightmare. But all my family who live rurally have cars.

So far everyone over the age of 17 bar DSD who is v dyslexic and can't pass the written bit. 1 more to go after her but he's 15 and v lazy. So could take some time.

Please don't let dyslexia bar her from this essential life skill ! There are procedures in place to assist with this difficulty. My son is dyslexic as well as autistic and he had a 'reader' . It was simple to arrange.

Woahtherehoney · 17/04/2024 08:03

In my immediate-ish family just me, my DP and my mum. My brother wants to learn to drive but always has an excuse so gets ferried around by my mum and his girlfriend, and my DP’s mum has never got around to it but wants to.

Oh my god! How did she manage that?!

Clearinguptheclutter · 17/04/2024 08:07

Every single adult bar SiL.
where we (and they) all live it would be hugely problematic not to.
Sil manages by having Bil taxi her everywhere.

itsgettingweird · 17/04/2024 08:09

Immediate.

Both of us.

Including parents, siblings etc all but 1 - but he's 13!

Wallywobbles · 17/04/2024 08:15

Thanks @ap1999 not in the UK, but France. There are dyslexic sessions but they don't seem to help at all.

MuggedByReality · 17/04/2024 08:15

We are a small family and all the adults except my mum have driving licenses. Like many working class women of her generation she never learned to drive because driving was considered the husband’s role.

DiscoBeat · 17/04/2024 08:40

Woahtherehoney · 17/04/2024 08:04

Oh my god! How did she manage that?!

Her first husband insisted on taking her out for a lesson when it was icy and she managed to flip the car. No-one was hurt, miraculously but she never got behind the wheel again.

Groovy48592747 · 16/04/2024 21:37

Everyone except my mother.

Passed test in her 30's, now 60's and has never driven.

Now she's on her own and has sadly never really been able to help us out that much with childcare.

Why should she have to? My mother has made it very clear she didn't want to be a grandmother (told me when I was 13) and has never offered a single day of childcare. I've never asked her either. DS is 10 now.

Dbirk · 17/04/2024 09:40

Every adult except for DSS who is just lazy. We offered to pay for everything including a car.

Librarybooker · 17/04/2024 10:16

Interestingly, the National Trust are offering a free coffee at some of their properties to those who show a bus or train ticket to prove they visited using public transport.

mumpenalty · 17/04/2024 10:17

My Mum learnt but never passed her test. Me and Dsis both have licenses but don’t drive due to anxiety and nerves. My Dbro doesn’t have a license. I think we all have undiagnosed adhd that means we struggle with driving. I am going to have refresher lessons and try again but I can’t imagine ever being someone who loves it, but will do the minimum for my kids. I’m deeply embarrassed by my inability to drive and I wish I felt different.

ohyesohyesoh · 17/04/2024 10:19

Everyone in my immediate family , over 17 apart from one. She can't due to medical reasons

CissOff · 17/04/2024 10:20

Everybody over the age of 17 has one in my family. We have a couple 17 soon and they will be learning straight away. It’s just the norm where I come from - public transport is woeful.
