This €113 / day rule for Spain

Just been reading about this. We are going to Spain for two weeks (AI, I think this is relevant but can't find anything about it!) for 14 nights. 2 adults, two kids. €6328 for two weeks.

We won't spend anywhere near hat, probably a couple of K max.

We could prove it with credit cards, but apparently online accounts aren't enough and the Spanish are asking for Travellers cheques or cash. What if you get paid halfway through the holiday? Do kids have to €113 a day too?

All seems a bit bonkers.

Do travellers cheques still exist?
It's not a new rule. I've travelled to spain several times in the last two years and never been asked. I don't carry much cash as spending all goes on card. I fas I suppose I could sign in to a bank account.
If you are on a package holiday I don't think they are interested. Travelling independently they might be but they would never let anyone in if they insisted on seeing wads of cash.

I think Spain is trying to kill its tourist industry: no water in the pools that people are paying to use, making ridiculous financial rules ..

Elephantswillnever · 15/04/2024 13:11

A credit/ debit card with an up to date statement is sufficient proof. My friend was stopped and she showed them her bank card and offered to shod online statement and they waved her through.

Surely no one is going ab egg oaf with 6k in euros. I’d think anyone with that much cash was up to no good in all honesty.

I think this one is as a result of Brexit (anyone do feel free to correct me here if I'm wrong).

UK travellers warned over £97 rule if holidaying to Spain this summer

A Spanish holiday warning has been issued to Brits

We've never been asked either

WhatACluster · 15/04/2024 13:18

I went to Spain last year and wasn’t asked 🤷‍♀️

I don’t carry that kind of cash but had my bank card and my credit card with me.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 15/04/2024 13:19

Its actually not a new rule (the money bit) its just that its being publicised. Lots of other countries have similar rules including the United Kingdom. Its rarely enforced and is there to allow countries to reject travellers that are likely to become a burden.

Yes it is per person.

You need to show (if asked) cash, cheques, traveller’s cheques or bank account statements as proof of funds.
You also need to show proof of a return ticket and accommodation.

There's no water in the pools because of severe drought and because having enough water to drink takes precedence over luxuries like swimming pools.

Financial rules have been in place for years, UK has the same ones. They've been in a very publicised drought for a number of years now. They're literally worried about having water to drink for it's citizens.... I don't think pools are high on the list of priorities.

sleepyscientist · 15/04/2024 13:43

@Cazpar @Foxesandsquirrels they also need to be concerned about tourism which brings money into the resort towns. Also they will be worrying about watering crops that they export more than tap water for drinking when alternatives exist.

HelenHywater · 15/04/2024 13:48

I went a few weeks ago and wasn't asked to show anything.

I'm sure the tourism has not gone over their heads. No one will be watering crops. It's futile. Clarkson's Farm actually has a really good episode on this. Spain has had a failed olive harvest for 2 years running now. It's all very much in the public news.

Not really Spain's fault there's a drought ?

Nonewclothes2024 · 15/04/2024 14:00

I've been going to Spain a lot for many years. Never been asked to show money , accommodation, return flights. Ever.

idontlikealdi · 15/04/2024 14:08

Oh I know it's not new, just a slight increase. Have never been asked either, but if they did and they wouldn't accept a digital bank statement / credit limit how does that work? What's t stop me flashing a maxed out credit card if they're not going to check?

the pool thing I get, although I understood that resort pools are still filled it's the private / rentals that aren't.

I live here and spend tops 20€ a day. Me and a teen.
All the pools are full/ filled.
This is all crappy propaganda. 100%

Psychoticbreak · 15/04/2024 14:24

Seriously? Thats mad Ted. Now I am Irish and heading to Spain myself so assume it does not apply for us but thats madness.

BringItOnxxx · 15/04/2024 14:27

They're obviously not going to enforce it for someone on an AI holiday.

BlackStrayCat · 15/04/2024 14:30

Exactly!

usernother · 15/04/2024 14:35

I went to Spain a few weeks ago on holiday and wasn't asked for any proof of anything apart from my passport.

Notreat · 15/04/2024 14:38

This rule has been in place for years. I've never been asked to prove how much I have though. I think it is just a random check. All they want to know is whether you have enough money to support yourself while you are in the country. It doesn't have to be cash. As long as if you are asked you can prove you have enough in the bank to draw on if necessary

The money yes, it's irresponsible journalism but in Andalusia the water thing is real.

BlackStrayCat · 15/04/2024 14:40

Crikey! I am in Valencia. All fine here.

Psychoticbreak · 15/04/2024 14:41

Anyone near Magaluf could tell me the current temp? I am in Ireland where its just rained since last July so the thoughts of a bit of sun is needed.

BlackStrayCat · 15/04/2024 14:46

about 25. Hot.
