This €113 / day rule for Spain

idontlikealdi · 15/04/2024 13:03

Just been reading about this. We are going to Spain for two weeks (AI, I think this is relevant but can't find anything about it!) for 14 nights. 2 adults, two kids. €6328 for two weeks.

We won't spend anywhere near hat, probably a couple of K max.

We could prove it with credit cards, but apparently online accounts aren't enough and the Spanish are asking for Travellers cheques or cash. What if you get paid halfway through the holiday? Do kids have to €113 a day too?

All seems a bit bonkers.

Anyone near Magaluf could tell me the current temp? I am in Ireland where its just rained since last July so the thoughts of a bit of sun is needed.

This made me chuckle. Hope you see an end to the rain soon! I'm sure Spain would love some.

welshcakes6 · 15/04/2024 14:51

Seems to depend where you fly into tbh. They are doing random checks at Malaga for finances I know a couple of people who have been asked but online banking has been ok. You sometimes need to show proof of where you are staying too so if it's with family then bring a letter from them.
Flying into Gibraltar and then crossing over into Spain is a minefield that I would probably stay away from. They will check everybody and you need proof of money and where you are staying proof of return flights etc.
And yes the pool situation is real I have already made a post about this. I can only speak for the Costa del sol Malaga region. Only hotels and designated holiday complexes will be open as it stands if we do not get any rain.
If you have booked privately airb&b's etc then please be aware you might be without a pool.
Spain are not trying to ruin the tourism industry and the checks are made on anyone from a 3rd country which now includes the U.K. and the water shortage is not to put tourists off either there are massive problems here.

Are they now? Show me one reliable link where this has happened for a family going on holiday. Lad Bible or the illiterate crap published by Reach Media's many online titles doesn't count.

If you've got booked commercial accommodation and a return ticket, they're not interested. They didn't even care when I was asked on entry to Menorca where we were staying and I said 'in a camper van', which was the only accommodation we had.

It might be a different story if you arrive with a one way ticket and a vague plan to stay with a friend but that's not relevant to the vast majority of Brits arriving in Spain on holiday.

@Bjorkdidit I agree if you have booked holidays through travel companies I doubt you will have problems at all.
It's not all made up though I do know people who have been stopped at Malaga and asked this information. People who have holiday homes and have had to show original deeds to their homes. People visiting family or friends having to show proof of funds and proof of where they are staying etc. it's a result of brexit.

TakeOnFlea · 15/04/2024 14:58

"Oh I know it's not new, just a slight increase."

So what's the point of the thread? Obviously people haven't been turned away day in day out for their holidays to Spain. In fact I don't know anyone who has been asked even

mondaytosunday · 15/04/2024 15:11

As Spain, like most places these days, accepts cards how are they ever going to expect anyone to carry cash (or travellers checks)? I never go over with more than about €150 in cash.
So, as ever, google is your friend. There have been surveys done since this law was passed asking who has been asked about this and what happened. One reports that 98% of one survey of almost 10,000 travellers were not asked about funds. The ones that were asked and responded in more detail said they were asked if they had a return ticket, and if they had funds for their stay. They gave the answer of X amount of cash and credit/debit card(s). That was fine and they were not even asked to produce the cards or cash.
I'm travelling to Spain in less than a couple months and am not worried.

Psychoticbreak · 15/04/2024 15:13

Are travellers cheques really still a thing??

Bjorkdidit · 15/04/2024 15:18

A more rational explanation, which concludes 'why you don't need to worry about the 109 euro a day rule'

https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/can-i-travel-to-spain-from-uk-aaZSk8j2LdPj#spain-entry-requirements

Last summer, the Ministry of the Interior told Which? Travel that this rule isn’t being applied to tourists and nobody has been refused entry for not having enough money

Which is a lot less alarmist than the likes of:

'Spain holiday warning as British tourists need to follow '£97 rule' to visit'

Although I think it would be fair that the rule should be applied in full to anyone who voted to leave the EU as they voted to bring it in after all.

"Surely no one is going ab egg oaf with 6k in euros. I’d think anyone with that much cash was up to no good in all honesty."

What's ab egg oaf? @Elephantswillnever

feemcgee · 15/04/2024 16:05

There always seems to be something to spoil our holiday! I'm going to Gran Canaria in June. Has anyone on here heard about anyone who has actually been refused entry to Spain because of this rule?

Bewareofthisonetoo · 15/04/2024 16:07

Never heard of this! Have been to Spain twice in the last month and have friend who flies there regularly -never been asked this!

notimagain · 15/04/2024 16:08

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 15/04/2024 13:19

Its actually not a new rule (the money bit) its just that its being publicised. Lots of other countries have similar rules including the United Kingdom. Its rarely enforced and is there to allow countries to reject travellers that are likely to become a burden.

Yes it is per person.

You need to show (if asked) cash, cheques, traveller’s cheques or bank account statements as proof of funds.
You also need to show proof of a return ticket and accommodation.

Agreed, most EU countries have similar requirements to Spain when it comes to third country nationals, exact amount required per day varies…that said you rarely get checked.

I think this one is as a result of Brexit (anyone do feel free to correct me here if I'm wrong).

Yes, the drought is clearly an unforeseen Brexit consequence.

About. Fat fingers and a rogue autocorrect.

"There always seems to be something to spoil our holiday! I'm going to Gran Canaria in June. Has anyone on here heard about anyone who has actually been refused entry to Spain because of this rule?"

No of course not. It's alarmist nonsense and doesn't affect tourists whatsoever

IsAnybodyListening · 15/04/2024 16:41

Honestly, I go to Spain a lot from the UK and this really isn't a thing.

LakeSnake · 15/04/2024 17:24

DelphiniumBlue · 15/04/2024 13:08

I think Spain is trying to kill its tourist industry: no water in the pools that people are paying to use, making ridiculous financial rules ..

It’s Brexit and the fact the U.K. is now a third country.
France has very similar rules, incl the fact that if you stay with family, THEY have to apply for an autorisation too, show they have the funds to house you etc

If there is any finger pointing to do, it’s towards people who voted for that.

LakeSnake · 15/04/2024 17:28

IsAnybodyListening · 15/04/2024 16:41

And tbh, these are the rules.

If at any point, someone decides to be difficult (as they can also be at border control entering the U.K. when it comes to european citizens btw - and they ARE being difficult), then you’d better know the rules and be ready for it.

Great if you’ve never been asked.
But don’t assume you’ll NEVER be asked.

Cornflakelover · 15/04/2024 19:29

I was in the canaries not long ago for 3 weeks and wasn’t asked

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 15/04/2024 19:48

UK has similar rules.

Border Force can demand to see return tickets and funds for the trip, when someone wants to enter UK as a visitor.

Fairyliz · 15/04/2024 20:13

Do you think we could possibly export some of our rain to Spain? We have enough of the bloody stuff.

cakeorwine · 15/04/2024 20:53

It's been around for a while
The UK has similar for people coming here.

I think it's aimed at people who aren't on holiday and aren't supposed to be working. Basically - how will you support yourself?

Bjorkdidit · 16/04/2024 02:22

Fairyliz · 15/04/2024 20:13

Do you think we could possibly export some of our rain to Spain? We have enough of the bloody stuff.

We could take some of their excess summer heat as an exchange.

This is what the clever people need to work on. Averaging out climate extremes so nowhere in the world is excessively wet, hot, cold, drought etc, just 'pleasant with sufficient rain to support agriculture and other requirements but at predictable times so it doesn't ruin summer fetes etc'.
