This €113 / day rule for Spain

idontlikealdi · 15/04/2024 13:03

Just been reading about this. We are going to Spain for two weeks (AI, I think this is relevant but can't find anything about it!) for 14 nights. 2 adults, two kids. €6328 for two weeks.

We won't spend anywhere near hat, probably a couple of K max.

We could prove it with credit cards, but apparently online accounts aren't enough and the Spanish are asking for Travellers cheques or cash. What if you get paid halfway through the holiday? Do kids have to €113 a day too?

All seems a bit bonkers.

It isn't true. I live in Spain. It's just the rightvwing media picking up on a story with a half-truth

Technically any 3rd national after brexit has to prove they have sufficient funds for their stay. The reality is they arent asking brits at all. Just carry a credit card so you csn prive you have access to additional funds on the very rare case they may ask.

They will only ask you of they think you are suspicious and likely to overstay

I think Spain is trying to kill its tourist industry: no water in the pools that people are paying to use, making ridiculous financial rules ..

Stop reading shite news reports. I live in Spain we do have water restrictions. But hotels are fine pools are full (private houses cant top their pools up )

No financial rules have been introduced. They have always been there for 3rd nationals and they are not being enforced for brits

I'm sure the tourism has not gone over their heads. No one will be watering crops. It's futile. Clarkson's Farm actually has a really good episode on this. Spain has had a failed olive harvest for 2 years running now. It's all very much in the public news.

There was an article about olive crops recently. The drought is one of the biggest reasons for hike in olive oil prices as I believe Spain is one of biggest exporters of olive oil.

Tbf swimming pool isn't a big deal when you can go swim in the sea.

I think the UK is desperately trying to make the EU look unappealing for holidays, remember the bed bug "epidemic" in France. They want you to spend your holiday £££in Britain.

That's an interesting conspiracy theory...which clandestine organisation are pulling these levers and why do the hate France so much?

LookItsMeAgain · 17/04/2024 10:40

This is what happens when your country decides to leave the EU.

This was a rule before but as you were part of the EU and common travel arrangement, it didn't apply to UK citizens.

You're now no longer part of this so you have to follow rules that you didn't have to follow up to now.

You need to be able to produce a bank statement that shows you have sufficient funds in your bank account to return to. Credit cards are, to the best of my knowledge, not acceptable as that just shows you have a credit limit and not the funds to actually pay the credit amount.

Desecratedcoconut · 17/04/2024 10:44

Well, that's just not what happens in practice. You arrive at the airport and they wave you through. Maybe if you wander in looking like a tramp they might use this tool to block entry.

LookItsMeAgain · 17/04/2024 10:46

BringItOnxxx · 15/04/2024 14:27

They're obviously not going to enforce it for someone on an AI holiday.

Why would you think AI holiday makers get a 'get out jail free' card on this?

IntermittentFarting · 17/04/2024 10:47

Polishedshoesalways · 17/04/2024 09:37

So how are you going to ‘prove’ you have sufficient funds if they won’t accept digital evidence?!

My post was in response to a PP saying Spain was a dinosaur for being so cash-based. But they're not, in fact. A lot less than other European places in my experience.

In answer to your question in the very highly unlikely event that I'm called upon to prove my financial heft, I'll show them my bank balance on my banking app.

Gettingonmygoat · 17/04/2024 10:48

The Spanish are fed up with us Brits( i don't blame them) Yes it is partly due to Brexit but mostly to do with the behaviour of many Brits whilst on holiday and the amount of Brits moving there to live. It had to happen sometime and Brexit pushed it off a cliff. We have invaded Spain and they are pushing back. Also they still want Gibraltar.

LookItsMeAgain · 17/04/2024 10:46

Because they don’t need money to support themselves they have food and accommodation already paid for.

Apologies, @Polishedshoesalways you were the poster!

It's been around for a while
The UK has similar for people coming here.

I think it's aimed at people who aren't on holiday and aren't supposed to be working. Basically - how will you support yourself?

Yes, has no one ever whiled away an hour watching Border Police on Dave?! All very standard questions and quite right too. Up to them who they let in.

As an aside, when we were leaving Eilat (Israel ) back in 2000 the rep warned us all that we may find the questioning a bit intrusive but to please answer. He wasn't wrong, had to provide details as to where we had been , how we'd got there - car, where did the car come from Hertz, did we have proof of the rental - yes, how did you find your way to x tourist spot we had a map, where did the map come from - hire car company, how do you know each other - boyfriend and girlfriend. And on it went. Married couples were being asked what date they got married, the chap behind us couldn't remember which didn't go well.

Yes they will have their food and accommodation paid for but that still isn't a special subsection of the law. It applies across the board.

Sandwichblock · 17/04/2024 10:53

I've been to Spain times in the last year and I've never been asked anything about money.

Similar here. I went to Eliat in 1995. Me and my best friend were in our early 20s at the time. Wanted to know how we had spent our time "dolphin excursion and visit to the Dead Sea, Jerusalem and Bethlehem" I said. They took us both to one side separately and questioned us both then cross examined us. Most likely because the trip to Bethlehem is in the West Bank. (Official tourist operator excursion at the time) They then asked what we did for a living. We worked for the UK Government (tried to explain we were office based junior civil servants) I swear they thought we were spies. They threatened to remove our camera film at one point.

It was one of the weirdest experiences in my life. Over an hour in total. Thankfully the rep had told us in advance so they allow extra time to be at the airport.

But yes, I've been to Aus, NZ, SE Asia and all totally normal when travelling for any length of time to be able to prove you have funds.

quizzys · 17/04/2024 11:05

Forget about the "Third Country adequate funds to support yourself" rules for a moment and be more concerned about long long queues at non EU passport control. That could be a bigger issue come the Summer influx, and may affect Brits the most. As a non EU Third Country.

The money rules are the same for Brits as they are for all other Third Countries. Tourists with accommodation and flights are not targeted in general, but it's good to have details on your phone, say your internet bank or such. Just in case....

The exceptionalism of many British never ceases to amaze me. Post Brexit and all.

Desecratedcoconut · 17/04/2024 11:06

There seems to be a fair few posters practically salivating at the idea that Brits will find themselves inconvenienced on their holidays to Spain. I think they'll find the reality of the situation doesn't match up to their punitive fantasies.

BlackStrayCat · 17/04/2024 11:08

Quite.
It could be France, it could be Italy.
Could be America or Canada.

Why the obsession with Spain?

StarlightLady · 17/04/2024 11:40

Similar rules apply to many countries all over the world. For those who voted “leave”, this situation was totally within your control.

They told you it would control our borders. You can therefore expect others to control theirs.

We went to the Dead Sea, it was awful weather, like Blackpool in January. We would have gone on a trip to Jerusalem and Bethlehem but it snowed which was unheard of .

FWIW that sort of grilling is absolutely standard for pretty much every passenger departing an Israeli airport and of course is nothing to do with money..

Even crew on outbound flights can expect to get a minor interrogation about subjects such as where have been on the layover.

Sandwichblock · 17/04/2024 12:18

I'm just back from a long weekend in Rotterdam. I was asked lots of questions about why I was there, how long I was staying and where etc. I'm sure if I was there with any kind of ulterior motive, I'd have had some acceptable answers prepared though, so you have to wonder what the point is.

Chersfrozenface · 17/04/2024 12:24

I've been to Germany three times in the last two years. Every time I amd others I was travelling with have been asked where we were going, where we were staying and for how long. No questions about money, though.
