Ice cream Van - still a thing

Light hearted!

The ice cream van has just come down our street. I thought they were a thing do the last to be honest.

I can not imagine hearing the bell
And then jumping up and thinking "I'm going to have an ice cream"

Yet we regularly had one as a child's

I think my life is so planned and dull the thought of spontaneous ice cream purchasing seems unhinged!

We’ve always had them about, though they are less spontaneous and more come certain days on a schedule. It was more of an issue before they took card payments as we don’t have a cash machine anywhere, so having cash was an obstacle.

shellyleppard · 14/04/2024 19:04

Ours starts coming round in February 🤣🤣

ByUmberViewer · 14/04/2024 19:06

love the sound of the ice cream man.

he still comes round here. I used to buy the kids one

FlowersInAFlowerBed · 14/04/2024 19:06

There always at the park round here, they don't come to houses or streets here anymore though much to my kids disappointment but they come to the parks several times a day (he circles round the local parks all day)

Itsokish · 14/04/2024 19:06

We had one today. We have always had them in our local villages.
My son who was at Leeds Uni said they were all drug dealers where he was living!

ilovepixie · 14/04/2024 19:06

We have one round here at weekends. I had one the other day.

StedeBonnet · 14/04/2024 19:07

Every Monday! The difference is you have to scrape together seven quid for two small 99s now

K0OLA1D · 14/04/2024 19:08

Ours comes pretty much daily in the summer. I always have to remember to have cash. We have multiple a week! Ours does all manner of juice and bits as well.

I'd be gutted if I moved somewhere with no ice cream van!

NotAllCapesWearHeroes · 14/04/2024 19:09

We had an ice cream from the van yesterday! Was sat on the sofa and heard the tinkly bells. I was out there in the queue faster than you can say Pavlov's Dog!

ZipZapZoom · 14/04/2024 19:10

Ours comes a handful of times a week and there's always one at the local park and often outside most of the local schools in the summer term. I love ours he has a card machine and a 99 is only £1.50 which still seems pretty bloody cheap compared to how much everything else has gone up over the years.

User1979289 · 14/04/2024 19:10

Ours is year round and sells disposable vapes and very small bags of weed 😂

Favouritefruits · 14/04/2024 19:11

Definitely still a thing around here March-October, there’s an elderly man and his wife across the road from us and they get one daily! We call them Mr&Mrs Ice cream as we don’t know their real names!

Needmorelego · 14/04/2024 19:11

@K0OLA1D most Ice Cream vans accept card payments these days......
@thedendrochronologist have you been living in a bunker? Ice Cream vans are everywhere all the time !
(There's even a Lego City set of one 😂)

FortunataTagnips · 14/04/2024 19:11

Ours parks outside our house every day once it’s warm enough!

BouleDeSuif · 14/04/2024 19:11

We have one, he's been round today. It's bloody freezing though so we didn't go out!

SerendipityJane · 14/04/2024 19:12

I thought they were simply a deliveroo for drugs these days ? A back of the cone calculation suggests you'd need to shift a lot of £4.99 cornets to cover insurance, fuel and labour.

Deliberationdivinationdesperation · 14/04/2024 19:12

We have one that comes round most days at the same time! I dashed out with my two year old in my slippers last week to get one for us!

msbevvy · 14/04/2024 19:14

Getting an ice cream from the ice cream van is one of the things on my bucket list. (not very ambitious but less achievable than it sounds)

We have lived in our second floor flat for donkeys years but I have never managed to get down there in time to get it to stop and serve me. I have walked past it several times on the way back from places but never when I had any money on me.

ScarletWitchM · 14/04/2024 19:14

We have about 3 or 4 that do the rounds - in the summer you get one every half hour!

SausageinaBun · 14/04/2024 19:15

I've always assumed they are dealing drugs. You'd have to sell a lot 9f ice creams to make a living from it.

Pashazade · 14/04/2024 19:17

I can hear one, but they never stop on my road it's too busy ☹️

Needmorelego · 14/04/2024 19:17

@SausageinaBun well if you see the queues when they park near a school at home time - I think they are selling plenty of ice cream 😂

CJ0374 · 14/04/2024 19:17

Our garden faces separate cul-de-sacs and little roads. Most weekends, the ice cream van is playing that repetitive music and I can hear it going around all the back streets- it drives me nuts! I saw it come down our road only once- and no one ran out or bought anything.
I recall reading an article about the pipework needing to be meticulously cleaned due to it be dairy and the high risk of bacteria and to avoid when pregnant etc. Even when not pregnant, I wouldn't touch it from one of those vans. 😬

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/04/2024 19:18

They bring us slushies at 5pm on a Sunday evening here. They have added dog ice-cream to their usual offer this year, but if they sell drugs they are not offering me any.

Blanketpolicy · 14/04/2024 19:18

Ours comes very sporadically and always parks across road and the same people come out and then it leaves. I wasn’t sure if they book it to come now as there doesn’t seem to be any pattern.
