Ice cream Van - still a thing

Light hearted!

The ice cream van has just come down our street. I thought they were a thing do the last to be honest.

I can not imagine hearing the bell
And then jumping up and thinking "I'm going to have an ice cream"

Yet we regularly had one as a child's

I think my life is so planned and dull the thought of spontaneous ice cream purchasing seems unhinged!

How can you tell which ones sell ice cream and which ones sell drugs? Do the regular ones play Greensleeves and The Entertainer, and the others are all Snoop Dogg and Green Day tunes?

calligraphee · 14/04/2024 19:20

Yes we sometimes go to the ice-cream van, if the mood strikes.

OutOfTheHouse · 14/04/2024 19:20

The one on our estate never stops as far as I can tell. One day I will go out and get one.

Shityshitybangbang · 14/04/2024 19:20

Love the tune of ice cream van on a summers night, childhood memories lol

Alicenwonderland · 14/04/2024 19:20

Ours comes around daily and it is the SAME ice cream man I had growing up. His name is Mario. I am 46 so goodness only knows how old he is!!

thedendrochronologist · 14/04/2024 19:21

Yes I have the Lego ice cream van - no bunker but surprised they still do the residential rounds

I am as surprised they were still financially viable - seems they have diversified!

Nota sure my street of either kids or elderly would be interested in weed or vapes so pretty sure it still sell ice cream too.

Although if you saw the toaster thread I'm suffering from "analysis paralysis"I probably am not their target market!

We have one that sits outside the parks and is very popular. Last time I saw one coming down my road on a hot summer's day with the bell on, I was surprised. Despite having several families in the road, nobody went outside so I don't think it will come again!

thedendrochronologist · 14/04/2024 19:23

Can understand the parks, seaside, events and schools etc in summer

Driving round residential streets strikes
Me as odd! A relic from the past!

But it's not the past, because it's happening now!

It's nice, doing things spontaneously is fun.

OpalOwl · 14/04/2024 19:36

Every Sunday at approximately 5pm the ice cream van practically parks on my drive. All year round.
Never even occurred to me that they'd be selling drugs!
99 with strawberry sauce does me fine.

thedendrochronologist · 14/04/2024 19:42

@calligraphee yes it's me who finds this odd rather than it being odd.

Maybe I'll push the boat out and have a 99 next Sunday.

One drives down my street every day playing his music. At dinner time. In winter. 🧐

And people go out to him!

Needmorelego · 14/04/2024 19:11

@K0OLA1D most Ice Cream vans accept card payments these days......
@thedendrochronologist have you been living in a bunker? Ice Cream vans are everywhere all the time !
(There's even a Lego City set of one 😂)

I aren't actually sure if ours does. I send the kids 🤣 But I shall ask them to check next time he comes!

It's never stopped here.

We don't have the pop man anymore. Though our milkman does do the pop that the pop man used to do!

thedendrochronologist · 14/04/2024 19:48

We used to have a fish man, milk man, pop man and ice cream man! We use them all.

We have one, he comes down our street at about 5pm every day. We only actually buy ice cream every few weeks, usually when the kids were already playing outside when it comes. They're proper old school mr whippy with hundreds & thousands and monkeys blood

SoapCollector · 14/04/2024 19:57

We have one, but there's no set time or pattern for it's arrival and by the time you've got some money and your shoes on he's driven off again!!

Crowgirl · 14/04/2024 20:04

Itsokish · 14/04/2024 19:06

We had one today. We have always had them in our local villages.
My son who was at Leeds Uni said they were all drug dealers where he was living!

That's not exclusive to Leeds it's just students are more aware of this. I mean they definitely need an additional income given the climate.

Sprogonthetyne · 14/04/2024 20:10

Actually, having read some of these answers, I think mine may be a drug dealer. The ice cream prices don't seem to have gone up in 10-20 years, still £1 or £1.30 if you want a flake. Presumably that doesn't cover the costs of running the van.

potatoschpotato · 14/04/2024 20:13

Ours is in the street right now jangling his bells. All I can think of is that the parents of young kids must really hate him!

ItsMintUpNorth · 14/04/2024 20:16

Not had one near me for about 15 years but there is one that still does where my in laws live pretty much all year round! He is from the village so as long as it's not raining at 3pm he will set off on his round no matter the temperature, MIL will often give him enough money so that when he gets to SIL's the grandkids ice creams have been paid for.

I want to know this, too! Other people are feeling nostalgic for whipped ice-cream ... some of us may be feeling nostalgic for the unofficial merchandise 😂
