Where is your oldest coathanger from?

I just realised that one of my coat hangers is from MK One, which I haven't shopped at since I was about seventeen (and hasn't existed for many years Sad).

Does anyone else have any 'vintage' coathangers? I feel weirdly attached to my MK One one, now. We've clearly been through a lot together.

I have a wooden one that's from 'Burton Tailoring' that is probably decades old.

I suspect my dad either stole it from the posh hotel he worked at, or bought it in an antique shop, because that's how he rolled.

This one...nicked from a very posh hotel in Mayfair by my Aunt in the 1930s Grin

I have a couple of MK One hangers too, and one from bay trading from around the same time.
I also have a couple of the old green river island ones with gold wiring from the time when their carrier bags had a globe and lots of faces on

That is so cool

DS1 has some on his own wardrobe, at camp, with his own service number on from when he joined the army in 2014, too. I should ask for one, really and keep them all together.

ChaoticBag · 14/04/2024 23:09

I don't think I still have it but for years I had a gold coloured one with 'The Men They Couldn't Hang' on it. I won it in a Smash Hits competition circa 1986 😄

I'm going to have to go through my wardrobe this evening now!

I have a sudden urge to check for the names on hangers and see where they came from.😁

Same, I think I might have a Principles one 😂

PassTheTrowel · 14/04/2024 23:15

I have several pale pink Dorothy Perkins ones with white lettering. I had a Saturday job there in 1983 and we could take bundles home.

RosesAndHellebores · 14/04/2024 23:19

Apropos previous posters, oh yes the padded ones of the 80s - I've about half a dozen. They are great for knits. We were given a dozen very nice quality wooden o es as a wedding present - nearly 35 years ago.

Twofifty · 14/04/2024 23:25

I have a wooden one from when I was in nursery, it was used for my nativity costume and has my name written in my late mother's handwriting.

Fillybuster · 14/04/2024 23:27

i came across a very smart wooden one last weekend with my late grandfather’s name written on it in pen, from a hotel they visited in the 1950s! We have several of that vintage kicking around!!

I have one covered with felt, with a stuffed teddy bear head on it that was a Christmas present 51 years ago 😁.

Yes! Mine have a rabbits head and I have a blue and a pink one. Circa 1976.

Fillybuster · 14/04/2024 23:29

And in terms of your original intent OP: we also have Clockhouse, BHS, St Michael, Topshop (loads!), Debenhams, and various others. We hold onto our hangars!!

fridaynight1 · 14/04/2024 23:30

I can't say I've ever dated my coat hangers but I do still have the one my wedding dress came with. So the that's 33 years old at least. There are probably some older ones but I couldn't identify them.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 14/04/2024 23:31

I had a wooden one that I think was from the 50s but the hook was too small for modern closet rods. Maybe I should have kept it.

LittleMonks11 · 14/04/2024 23:31

My grandparents' hotel from the 1960s

Delphigirl · 14/04/2024 23:33

We have quite a few 1920s and 1930s hangers on which hang my husbands grandfathers and fathers tweed suits which my husband still wears shooting or racing… nothing is thrown out in that family

purplemunkey · 14/04/2024 23:54

I have a Streets Ahead one from Woolworths, which must be from the 80s.

CheapThrillsMeanNothing · 15/04/2024 00:38

One of Uncle's from WW2 with his name and army number.

Runnerinthenight · 15/04/2024 00:46

I've a Mondi one but not sure how old it is!

Nat6999 · 15/04/2024 03:07

I still have some of the ones that were bought for me as a toddler, 57 years ago.

PilkosPumpPants · 15/04/2024 03:22

B Wise clothing. My parents didn’t have a lot of money and we used to go there for clothes. I hated it and always wanted to go to more fashionable places.

I love the people still have wooden hangers with their names on, might make a couple for my children as a useful item to stay with them.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/04/2024 06:46

Istanbul Hilton circa 1974

Okayornot · 15/04/2024 06:53

I have some my mum bought for me to take to boarding school in 1987.

ShiftySquirrel · 15/04/2024 06:55

Mine is a wooden folding hanger. It belonged to my Indian great grandma. I'd imagine it's from the 1940s and was left in the UK after she visited one of her sons in the 1960s.

Curlyshabtree · 15/04/2024 06:58

Weirdly I was thinking about this the other day. Mine are yellow Johnson’s dry cleaning ones I’ve had for 25 years.
