Where are all the posh, wealthy folk holidaying this year?

Primroseoil · 14/04/2024 09:57

I'm neither but the wealthy middle class families in the Dc's class are headed to Greece & Ibiza.
One of the families was skiing in Austria at half term, the other family skiing in the French Alps in the Easter hols.
Also they have numerous UK trips to St Ives etc during the summer..

Happy to be getting away to Spain this year. But I do get wanderlust watching where the people with money & means go!

Yeah, even the most committed carnivore is probably 80% vegetarian so I'm not sure why you are exactly touting that as some sort of virtue.

Soigneur - What’s your list of virtuous acts that you do to help with climate change?

And meanwhile, the planet burns ……

It's burning anyway! You might as well see it before it goes up in smoke.

icallitasplodge · 15/04/2024 11:41

I’m just saying from the people I know. I don’t think I know anyone (that doesn’t live there part of the year) who goes to Turkey except for surgery or all inclusive food. The mountains and the ruins and the balloons are nice but again, people go there for the Instagram pictures.

I sort of agree about France. I found Nice to be a little like the English seaside towns but without the arcades. My friend stays in her great grandparents house, this is why I say old money. 30 year old stock brokers aren’t picking Nice are they 🤣

Well. I've got my new pool (thank you everybody). So personally, I'll be splashing about (in the shallow end) with my flamingo rubber ring. Fortunately the pool is heated (thank you again) so it should be really pleasant, although the months ahead do look a little stormy (according to my advisors) but then what do they know!

After all inflation's down (although not on my rubber ring I hope, ha-ha) Labour's in a bit of a pickle with their 'housing policy' whilst the Liberals - well who knows?

Bring on the Li-los, I say!

It's nice that you have a hobby Rishi, you are going to have a lot of free time soon.

I don't have any. I do find it hilarious that someone is stating that because they are "80% vegetarian", that somehow offsets multiple flights a year. It's like those people who stuff their face but then think having an apple afterwards evens everything out.

Maybe 80% is not strictly correct I just threw a number out there but we are not committed carnivores. We don’t eat beef or pork. Lamb mince every few months (not eaten it so far this year), chicken 3-5 times a month, eggs daily, tuna or salmon a couple times a week. I don’t think I’m virtuous at all, but I do think the way we’ve chosen to live our lives (not just a mainly veg diet but also the other parts I mentioned which you have ignored) means I can enjoy travelling without feeling guilty.

The Caribbean is only for winter sailing holidays. The summer months are humid and bring hurricanes, so most tourist resorts are cheap and quiet then.

Fingers crossed for some sun here in the UK. Nowhere nicer in a decent summer.

We’ve been to Barbados many times, inc. in the depths of winter, and in fact I prefer it in the warmer months. In early Feb there just wasn’t that glorious blanket of heat and the sea (Caribbean side) was colder and not as beautifully calm.

Incidentally hurricanes usually miss Barbados, though we did once experience a spectacular storm in October.

Great thread - we know where to avoid this year!

As I've got older Ive preferred to stay in the UK and discover our beautiful Island. Visited Scotland in January and loved it! Lots of push folk around.

I think we will cope without you! 😂🍸

Have you ever tried to get on the BA flight back from NCE on bank holiday Monday?

It is London couples in their 20s and 30s.

I’m working class OP but going to lots of the places you mentioned. Done skiing already this year and got St Ives, Greece and Ibiza booked. Working class doesn’t mean poor 😉

Me too. Earn decently now but definitely wc background. Maybe my kids are mc now, I don't know.

We've been skiing in Italy & Greek island trip booked in May. In summer we'll have a week or 2 away in the U.K. October probably canaries or maybe a European city.

Marchintospring · 15/04/2024 22:42

Rich people fly to Nice. They don't stay there though. They go to their holiday homes all along the Riviera. Many times I get chatting to someone on the plane and they are off to a villa along the coast.

You aren't going to limit global warming by stopping people doing things that make individual lives better. Business travel needs to stop first. Unbelievable amounts of air travel which could be stopped with little detrimental effect to business.

Oh my kids live a very middle class life! But I’ve been on mumsnet long enough to know my place - WC 😂

TunaCrunchy · 16/04/2024 07:57

The MC without loads of money holiday pattern I’ve noticed is.

Cottage in UK with grandparents to keep costs down.

Then cottage without the grandparents.

Then Jersey or France for years.

Then more France.

Then Italy or somewhere further than France plus a city break somewhere in Europe each year.

Throw in the Sicily Isles at some point.

Deliberately avoiding Spain because in their minds, that's where common people go to get pissed in the sun and fight over chips.

SisterAgatha · 16/04/2024 12:13

No I went to jersey every year as a kid. It certainly isn’t MC. Maybe now. We were piss poor. I didn’t even know that bell peppers were a real food till I was 18. We used to eat meat from a tin.

SisterAgatha · 16/04/2024 12:15

It was bloody hard to get to back then too, we used to take a plane from Southampton that had actual propellers. We stayed in a pontins 😂

People who obsess over appearing common sound so bloody dull.
Edited to say - Spain is such an amazing country to explore - to be so narrow-minded to think it's all Benidorm is totally idiotic.

TheaBrandt · 16/04/2024 13:55

There is an annoying type of UMC parent who obviously feel superior going to Cornwall it’s often said with a smug demeanour. So when making polite conversation about summer plans a type of “Cornwall obviously” <smug smile>. Guess they going for the Enid Blyton /wholesome kids frolicking with dog vibe. Annoys me somehow. Enjoy the rain and packed pubs!

TheaBrandt · 16/04/2024 13:55

We flipping love Spain

Bodyshame1980 · 16/04/2024 14:34

@TunaCrunchy France isn’t cheap. We did two weeks last year there and it was £10k (we also did the GPs cottage) and Spain and Gran Canaria!

Crikeyalmighty · 16/04/2024 14:39

@TheaBrandt ha, ha- you are right!! Personally give me pretty much guaranteed decent weather, outdoor terraces , pools and a lovely hotel or villa and restaurants that don't suddenly cancel and I can eat at 9.30 if I want to and jolly waiting staff

Colinfromaccounts24 · 16/04/2024 14:53

The poshest family I know (landed gentry) stay at (one of) their houses in Suffolk all summer, and actually most of the other holidays. Very rarely holiday abroad.
The rich middle class families at school have all done skiing at Easter. Holidays I know of for the summer are Cornwall (in their holiday home), sailing in Greece, Sri Lanka, South of France, Cap Ferrat.

We are non-rich probably lower middle class, and are camping in the Dordogne (summer) and NYC (May half term). We went to Bath Feb half term. Might also try and squeeze in a short break to Cornwall in the summer (camping). Our daughter went to my parents house on the south coast over Easter. But it is their only house and is a very definitely non-posh part of the south coast.
