Where are all the posh, wealthy folk holidaying this year?

Primroseoil · 14/04/2024 09:57

I'm neither but the wealthy middle class families in the Dc's class are headed to Greece & Ibiza.
One of the families was skiing in Austria at half term, the other family skiing in the French Alps in the Easter hols.
Also they have numerous UK trips to St Ives etc during the summer..

Happy to be getting away to Spain this year. But I do get wanderlust watching where the people with money & means go!

There are many things that contribute to climate change.

Large families
High meat diet
Buying plastic crap, fast fashion and new tech every five minutes.
Massive gas guzzling 4x4s.

As I'm childfree, eat hardly any meat, drive a tiny petrol car and buy hardly any 'stuff' I feel no guilt for going on holiday to a sunnier part of Europe two or three times a year.

You are 10000% correct! I'm a vegan so that's my contribution plus I am a massive recycler. Enough with the guilt @Bjorkdidit .Do you have a car? I assume by your post you walk or cycle everywhere you need to go?

Peurto Rico in Gran Canaria or the actual place in Central America?

I’m sorry but Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria really isn’t “posh” at all.

hopsalong · 15/04/2024 00:17

Montenegro, Croatia, Albania, mainland Greece or weird islands that you can only get to by ferry from Athens etc. Austrian and Italian lakes. They like medical spas, too.

In the UK, South Cornwall rather than north, Salcombe, Welsh coast, Lake District, Norfolk, Scotland.

Half-term breaks in very expensive hotels in Venice, Rome, New York, Paris etc.

I don't know where they go skiing because I'm not interested in going myself and don't listen!

Long-haul: South Africa, Cuba. Undoubtedly lots of other places.

Wow all these holidays are quite astonishing. Does anyone on this thread understand climate change at all? Or does everyone just not care?

My husband & I are childfree, our diet is 80% vegetarian, buy sustainable, local food & groceries as much as possible, we haven’t bought new clothes in years except for essentials & we don’t have a car so no I don’t feel bad that I’ve just booked another holiday.

We’re not posh but we earn well. So far we’ve been to Cape Town, Mauritius & Oman. Lake Orta & Zermatt in a few months. We’re thinking of going back to S Africa, but next time to KZN for Christmas.

juggleit · 15/04/2024 03:39

Great thread - we know where to avoid this year!

As I've got older Ive preferred to stay in the UK and discover our beautiful Island. Visited Scotland in January and loved it! Lots of push folk around.

TheaBrandt · 15/04/2024 07:29

Yeah climate change and flight guilt doesn’t seem to be “a thing” for the super rich we know…There we are getting the train to France and they off on third long haul of the year.

We are normal but dd2 has blundered into super rich circles and Dh and I are agog at their lifestyle. They are not normal upper middle class rich but wildest dreams rich. It’s a different world.

What's the appeal in Salcombe? It's just a few shops and a pub. Sheringham isn't that much better unless you're obsessed with steam trains or avoiding lumps of cliff falling onto your head if you decide to have a walk up to Henry Blogg's statue and see the neverchanging lifeboat museum.

We’ve been to Salcombe a few times. I like it as I’m usually the most common person there - I don’t want to be somewhere with arguing couples shouting at their kids to „get here“ with dads walking round with no shirt on. Because that was what I saw in my childhood and it makes me feel really sad.

mitogoshi · 15/04/2024 08:06

Costa Rica, Isles of Scilly, Scotland, south of France are all popular. Most people I know are now past child rearing though. We fall into this category and it's the Shetlands for us, do abroad in the winter

Curtainsforus · 15/04/2024 08:22

We’re doing Norfolk and Wales this year. Holidaying in the Uk is not necessarily a cheap option.

@BoneshakerBike
this article states that a household income over 100k puts us in the top 5%
https://www.chase.co.uk/gb/en/hub/living-on-100k/
admittedly it’s a year old

meanwhile this article suggests that only 4% of individuals earn over 100k
https://upthegains.co.uk/blog/is-100k-a-good-salary-uk

by many measures a household income over 100k is extremely lucky and I’m very aware. By global measures it’s something like the top 2%. Yet we feel far from wealthy, and are pretty staggered by the holiday budgets some on here seem to have. We’re not in London, and don’t have a very big mortgage either.

I think £100k household income is something like top 10% of households.

In any case - income isn’t such an important measure nowadays, compared to wealth!

At a basic level - a third of homes are owned without a mortgage. That would free up a lot of money…!

No, I don't care. The incredibly wealthy don't care, the government don't care, so neither do I.

VenusClapTrap · 15/04/2024 10:03

Round here they’re all going to Puglia or Thailand. I don’t know why Thailand seems to be having a moment, but it is. Seems a bit retro to me! But that’s because I associate it with backpacking in the 90s.

We’re trying to cut back on flying to reduce our appalling carbon footprint, so we’re just driving to France in our electric car.

(And yes, I’m fully aware that that electricity has been generated by fossil fuels, but it’s still considerably less than flying and the first 300 miles will be from our home charge which is all renewable.)

Shetlands · 15/04/2024 10:10

The thing about Salcombe isn't the town, it's the setting (I live nearby). A stunning estuary with little beaches on both sides, excellent sailing, fishing and opps for other watersports eg SUP or pop over to Bantham to surf. A couple of miles up the coast are some great beaches eg Thurlestone. Most people have access to a small boat to travel up the estuary to a waterside pub for lunch or dinner.

I avoid Salcombe between June and October because it's heaving with visitors and overflowing with public school teenagers who can't hold their drink or refrain from bellowing up the street to their mate 'Wanko' (you get the picture). The rest of the year (not holiday weekends) is better, especially if you have a small boat and can go to the estuary beaches inaccessible by road. If you don't fancy the journey down by road, there's a small airfield nearby or join the ranks of those who arrive by helicopter!

blue345 · 15/04/2024 10:21

I love Salcombe too and I don't sail. Beautiful views, really like visiting Burgh Island, nice shops and places to eat. Also good if you're into spotting red trousers.

So posh, wealthy people don't make friends on holiday or need to be entertained? Only poor working class people do? Grin The snobbery on this thread is amusing me.

Well, Tosca at the Staatsoper in Vienna, or the son et lumière at the théâtre antique d'Orange isn't quite the same as a wet t-shirt contest at Butlins now is it?

Yeah, even the most committed carnivore is probably 80% vegetarian so I'm not sure why you are exactly touting that as some sort of virtue.

iloveshetlandponies · 15/04/2024 10:42

I reckon as well that since social media becoming massive, having several holidays a year is now a flex

As people can easily post pics and location so EVERYONE knows where you are . The more holidays in flashy / trendy / expensive places the better the flex

I'm not gonna lie, since becoming more wealthy I do get a buzz out of posting holiday pics, I admit it

Bjorkdidit · 15/04/2024 10:46

IsThePopeCatholic · 15/04/2024 10:38

And meanwhile, the planet burns ……

I hope you don't have children.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jul/12/want-to-fight-climate-change-have-fewer-children

Annual impact of having one child - 58.6 tonnes CO2
CO2 produced for a return transatlantic flight - 1.6 tonnes CO2.

Therefore a childfree person could fly to New York nearly every week and their carbon impact would be less than a person with even one child, everything else being equal.

Want to fight climate change? Have fewer children

Next best actions are selling your car, avoiding flights and going vegetarian, according to study into true impacts of different green lifestyle choices

And meanwhile, the planet burns ……

It does but wealthy people won't change their lifestyle. I know quite a few of them and they buy offsets to make themselves feel better about their huge carbon footprints.

My old money friend goes to the house in Nice or the house in Barbados or the house in Portugal.

My new money friends go to Greece but a small island with zero on it, in a friends apartment.

I only know “negative rich” ie credit card people who go to Turkey.

Istanbul is a fascinating city. Last time we went one of dh's colleagues recommended an eco-resort in Turkey - it was so expensive they didn't even have prices on the website. Ruling out an entire country as low rent suggests a lack of imagination that I can't quite believe. I get that some people have very conservative tastes but the wealthy people I know don't want to go to the well-trodden spots like Nice they sound too boring and lack boasting potential.

Central America. Photos make it look stunning… I’m going to puerto Mogan in Gran Canaria which is just along from Puerto Rico… but I’m not posh or wealthy.

someon · 15/04/2024 11:12

We love Turkey. And we are definitely not ' negative rich'

We are a combination of old and new money.

When we went in April Istanbul and toured around stayed in fabulous hotels saw lots of rich turks enjoying themselves really lovely hospitality better than most in the world and amazing food with their own celeb chefs and they have some nice wine too
i personally think France is so overrated and quiet dull really and never found the french that great but thats personal experience from getting them to do things i don't and never seen the attraction
We are actually thinking of selling up in France to either buy in Italy or even Turkey in next few years.
