ps I don't feel one little bit sorry for her

DollyPartonsLeftnip · 13/04/2024 16:15

Can anyone please put the link to the first thread? I would love to read from the beginning?

PineappleTime · 13/04/2024 16:18

People are discussing whether the case is covered by adverse possession on the joke thread 😆🤦🏼‍♀️

I'm inclined to volunteer my son and his friend to write the musical for you all.

(They've already written one which has just had its second amateur production, the sky's the limit! 😁)

As long as they include a song about adverse possession, which became an obsession, I think that would be fine.

Thanks for the condolences x

Sorry, but this movie would be rubbish. I mean, great first act setting the scene of couple with a sad past looking for new house. We obviously need to delve into the past to get the emotions going and how important new house purchase is. Second act will be dealing with garage thief and really get the audience riled up. This will be resolved satisfactorily and just before the ad break we are gearing up for allotment thief. Sadly, after the ad break Babs will be going to a solicitor who sets her straight, pats crazy parsnip lady gently on the arm saying "there there" and the rest will be over very quickly.
Otoh, I would love to watch a movie full of mn references: pom bears in a bowl; beaker of water next to the bed being eyed suspiciously; sneaky neighbours returning from a holiday in Mexico etc

Sadly, after the ad break Babs will be going to a solicitor who sets her straight

Obvioudly that’s not the whole story.

Obviously she wouldn’t have spent all that time on the allotment, knowing that her friend had sold her house if there weren’t something going on in the shed or underneath the potatoes.

I’m wondering if we need to think beyond drugs/murder/theft and think more along the lines of alien invasion?

"Also I want to know about the elderly Korean lady. What was that thread?"

Here you go:

I only read the OP's posts but what a lovely little story. Thank you.

Is this another Chris’s horse type thing?

WiddlinDiddlin · 13/04/2024 16:37

Babs shed is in fact a portal to a secret tunnel network, leading to her Evil Overlord headquarters, where she plots how to win the village 'Largest Leek' competition, and co-ordinates the illicit use of garages for the village smuggling ring. Relinquishing control of the allotment will bust the whole thing wide open.. she'll fight tooth and claw to retain her Empire!

AwBlessm · 13/04/2024 16:37

Barbara doesn't own it, and Barbara doesn't think she owns it. Barbara is a chancer, hoping to make a claim based on (from the 1st post of thread 1):

-the previous owner (a “very dear friend” of hers apparently) let her use it
-she’s been using it for 10 years
-she’s cultivated this patch for several years
-she grows all her veggies here
-it’s her sanctuary
-she paid for the shed

She doesn't think the previous owner gave it to her (even if she thought that, it's clear that hasn't been done in any official way). She knew the house and plot were sold. She planted things anyway in a land grab attempt.

The OP has very wisely instructed a solicitor to deal with it and made a record of the current condition of the plot.

suicune · 13/04/2024 16:39

At the end of the day, if the place meant so much to you and was your “sanctuary”, surely the first thing you would do when you saw the house go on the market was offer to buy the plot?

The neighbour is a CF. She should have bought the plot as soon as the house went on the market, or even if that wouldn’t work, she could have came round, politely introduced herself and asked permission to continue using the plot, or share the plot, even until the end of this year.

Yes, “Troll hunting “ is a serious no no on MN and can get people suspended.

Eg saying outright that you think a thread is a fib.
One is meant to just “ Report” the thread.

It’s unusual that land and a garage aren’t mentioned in an estate agent’s blurb as both add substantial value to a property-
( Depending where in the country it is, of course)
A Garage in Chelsea would easily be north of £250,000

Neither the parcel of land nor the garage were listed as part of the sale, and it just so happens that there are problems with vacant possession of both. How do you list a property for sale with an EA and ‘forget’ that you have a garage and extra land ? Good job the solicitor was on the ball, or OP would never have known - and I suspect that was the plan.

PrettySenior · 13/04/2024 16:07

I'm not sure Babs would know it's not her land. Her friend gave it to her and therefore didn't advertise it as part of the house sale. Not everyone is knowledgeable enough about the legal system to realise it would depend on what was on the deeds, not on what was advertised for sale on Rightmove and by the estate agent. I do feel sorry for her.

But according to thread one, episode 2 (ep one was the CF in the garage) Babs and the seller both said that Babs had been allowed to use it...no mention of a gift...surely if Babs had been gifted the land, no matter what the facts turned out to be, the first words out of Bab's gob would have been "she gave it to me" and NOT "she let me use it" M'lud I rest my case.

You're really dragging this out, eh.

Dragging this out? If someone was squatting on your land without your consent wouldn't you want them gone?

No the old home owner should have sorted all that out long before packing up and moving. The only good thing is the allotment has at least been maintained. But the old owner shouldn't have just assumed the new one would be happy with the situation.

Projectme · 13/04/2024 16:58

Just to placemark and say I'm happy to have a non speaking extras part in the Hollywood film. Im quite good at leaning on a fork or shovel whilst contemplating the surrounding land...Thanks.😁

Any adult and quite a few children would know that a transfer of ownership would need to be in writing, even in the unlikely case that they knew nothing about deeds and land registry.

You need Jilly Cooper to screen write this for you and add a bit of, 'allotment bonking' to the mix.

Is your husband by any chance, swarthy or handsomely dishevelled?

<squints at DH>

I mean he’s a bit smelly and pink faced from our walk today. Does that count?

Have you found out yet why your solicitor didn't look at the Title? Ie why your solicitor didn't do the first thing any conveyancer has to do?

What do you mean? Why do you think they didn’t look at the title?

I worked in a local authority and we had to monitor things local communities did, including some gardening, titivating buildings, managing graves, pruning shrubs, placing planters etc etc and if I started the job believing people who told me that they had had permission from an individual, now absent, who was their 'very dear friend' I learned my lesson. Some of the 'very dear friends' told absolute horror stories once they knew they were safe.
