We have a lot, including a lido! However, we don't have a train station or a shoe shop

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 12/04/2024 08:34

A lido and Waitrose.

Neversaygoodbye · 12/04/2024 08:55

Somewhere for the 16/17 year olds to hang out, maybe a cafe that stays open later at night.
An M&S and Next (or even a returns facility to save a 20 mile round trip). An Aldi. A banking hub to replace lost banks.
A lido would be lovely, I know there used to be one many years ago and our local pool is pretty small for the population.
A decent Chinese.

Loopytiles · 12/04/2024 08:57

Bus services to the next town.

Clicheinaqashqai · 12/04/2024 09:04

A really good playground. There's a few small ones dotted about but all have broken bits or are very run down, plus have the same few bits of equipment. There's an amazing, huge, new playground in a town about 20 minutes drive away l, but to have one closer would be brilliant.

SpringOfContentment · 12/04/2024 09:09

A bus!

A cut through to the (free) country park, rather than having to drive 5 miles to park and walk back til you can see the edge of town!

A library would be lovely, but the last one burnt down and hasn't been replaced. I can walk to the next town and use theirs tho.

Rocknrollstar · 12/04/2024 09:09

Some nice clothes shops; some shops selling crafts and nice gifts. We did have a toy shop, bookshop and a good shoe shop once upon a time. Most of all, I don’t want Macdonalds which is taking over the biggest site on the Hight Street.

pastypirate · 12/04/2024 09:20

A big boots with parking right outside. Other nearish towns have them but not us. It was so much easier to bulk buy nappies etc when the car was yards away and get the points.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/04/2024 09:26

If I said 'an ice rink' everybody who lives in my town would know where it is. (I don't want an ice rink.)

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 12/04/2024 09:30

I live in Souf Lundun so: a Tube station!

CandidFruit · 12/04/2024 09:59

I have everything I need in my town amenities wise.
So the only thing I’d like that isn’t already here (referring back to thread title) is my mum!

NoCheesesForUsMeeces · 12/04/2024 11:04

A good butcher that sells high welfare, local meat.
A bakery that isn't either Greggs or a high priced cupcake place.
A cafe (like a greasy spoon).

What I'd like less of are cheap/poundland type shops (local town has 3 I think) and fast food places (I'm pretty sure we have McDs, KFC, newly opened BK and a lot of other random kebab and burger shops.

Also, going against the grain of the thread but bloody supermarkets. I live in a decent-ish size town but there are 5 within a 2 mile radius. While it's good to have choices, no town this size needs so many.

MarmiteyCrumpets · 12/04/2024 13:01

Vegan restaurant, good women's health specialist, snow in winter.

AnnaMagnani · 12/04/2024 13:04

Some of you are already spoilt!

I would settle for a bus that went more than twice a week- literally you get 30 minutes in Tesco and back home.

So a bus. A bus to anywhere will do!

A bit of ethnic diversity wouldn't go amiss in our rural Cornish village.

People like to say that on MN. But there was one of those "Where would you most like to live?" threads on here recently and the vast vast majority of the places mentioned were overwhelmingly white, middle class, and dare I say in hushed tones, Tory safe seats.

crackofdoom · 12/04/2024 21:52

Yeah, because the white middle classes have got their paws firmly on all the nicest places! 😆

(This is not a Tory safe seat....it's an extremely wobbly one 🤞)

mewkins · 12/04/2024 22:01

A bookshop, a wool shop and record shop. The town used to have all of these but sadly no more.... we do however have a cinema about to open!

RaininSummer · 12/04/2024 22:03

Nice shops and lovely cafes rather than endless charity shops, turkish barbers and pound shops.

IsleOfPenguinBollards · 12/04/2024 22:11

An indoor sky-diving centre!

Failing that, an auditorium with enough seats to enable big-name acts to appear. Our local theatres are too small to make such performances viable.

user1497787065 · 12/04/2024 22:17

A street light and a pavement.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/04/2024 22:23

One of the old fashioned hardware shops that have everything and know exactly where it is. And when you say you need a thingummybob for doing a whatdyoucallit, he says ‘Oh, you mean a Bludgit, a size two should do, there you go - three quid.’

fishfingersandtoes · 12/04/2024 22:24

A swimming pool and a lido, we have most things tbh

DiamondSS · 12/04/2024 00:22

Another thing that I think would work in most towns but probably not a huge money maker. Just a large space with WiFi and a printer with a good coffee shop at one end where everyone that works from home can come along and not feel any guilt at taking up a seat in a coffee shop for too long. Maybe sections for similar types of work so that people can maybe chat to others doing similar things. I love working from home but do end up going days without any form of adult conversation if my husband is away

Take a flask to the library! 😃

MissingMoominMamma · 12/04/2024 22:28

We have many of the things listed here, but no train station.

Arrestedmanevolence · 12/04/2024 22:30

Bubble tea, vape shops, nail bars. Oh wait no, that's ALL we have.
