A thread for moaning about the cost of everything

Just 4 years ago I could get my hair done and nails done for £70 all in all.

It’s now £135 for both of these. Double.
(I understand cost of living drives up the prices for people who are self employed, and I’m not blaming them individually for it)

Bills are up so much this month. The price of everything is just horrendous and I don’t know how some people manage!

'Life admin ' takes so much time !
Especially as the old insurance won't let you cancel it online ( but you can do everything else there )
I had to ring up my old contents insurance people to cancel and listen to half hour of different 'menu ' buttons and then finally talk to someone who advised me I might not be as well covered as I was with them ( for double the money )
Not had a claim ever and you pay an excess if you did , so I'm willing to take a chance my new one might be as good as their one was.
It's just a money making racket and I wished something could be done about all of it
Rant over

And how come the cost of milk is stabilizing and the cost of energy is decreasing but my Yeo Valley yogurt is shrinking and the price is still bolting? 🤷

bakewellbride · 10/04/2024 20:27

@Wasntmeanttobelikethis Nottingham west

bakewellbride · 10/04/2024 20:28

And no it's not near any attractions (that I know of) and wasn't booked last minute.

70sShmeventies · 10/04/2024 20:29

Went to buy a mullet corner the other day, 2 years ago it was 60p, now a pound

Food shop bankrupting us.

We had a meal out the celebrate our 10 year anniversary, we’ve not been out to eat for ages as we have two small children and well CoLC. All the starters were the price of a main! The same meal I ordered 3 years ago was literally double the price and vastly smaller! Ffs.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 20:32

Yoghurts are gone in two spoonfuls
Another thing I've given up on

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 20:33

70s
Mullet corner ! I just realized you mean Muller corner yoghurts.
I was imaging hair for a moment !

Q2C4 · 10/04/2024 20:35

I had a fit when I bought a dress (M&S, not fancy) in my local charity shop last week. I thought it would be £3-5. It was £11!!

Abracadabra12345 · 10/04/2024 20:38

Fruit. Sadly it's something we have had to cut right back on

Meals out and entry fees to attractions. We're on a UK trip and everything costs a fortune. The Premier Inn prices are fine though - we booked well in advance in a less expensive area, including a Sunday night. Saturday night prices are shocking!

Littleelffriend · 10/04/2024 20:45

Bagels from Tesco the other day. £2.50? No way

Thulpelly · 10/04/2024 21:02

I dye my own hair now and leave it way too long between cuts/started trimming the ends myself cos I can’t afford it anymore.

LunaandLily · 10/04/2024 21:02

I’m obsessed with the fact that dove deodorant is now £4.50, garnier micellar water (the biphasic one) is £9. For what reason??

Just had a family member staying with me and she was delighted at how cheap eating out here is and the price of food ,they said it's really expensive in America.

I'm in the USA now and food in the UK is cheap compared to here.
Utilities and mobile costs are also much lower.
The UK has a lot of price rises to come to catch up with other countries particularly in relation to food costs.

Is it because you are looking at the branded section or a particular line of clothing? I think that their own clothing lines are good value - but perhaps that's because I buy the cheaper, more basic lines.

It’s their own brand. I always thought they were really good value until I was looking this week. It seemed like prices had shot up.

And Tesco announce record profits of £2 billion plus. Coincidence??

Was just about to post this, it is shocking, they are making a killing from all this. I do not shop there, I hate all that clubcard "I've got the power" crap and the exploitative two tier pricing.

Anjelika · 10/04/2024 21:38

ItsallIeverwanted · 10/04/2024 17:53

@Anjelika unless you want the brand new trendiest stuff (which I'm not sure is in Next...) then I'd go on Vinted, and search for Next items in your size, you may be very surprised, it's a brand that sells a lot on Vinted for good prices. I've just got a linen jacket on there for £12 including postage, £8 price. Next jeans and trousers also appear there a lot. If you like brand new, then search brand new with tags, brand Next, I've resold Next stuff on there that has never been worn.

I like the ease of returning stuff to Next and I always order at least 2 different sizes as their sizing varies a bit. I’d only use Vinted if it was a particular item that I knew would fit in a particular size. I bought a Didriksons coat on Vinted as I’d tried it on in Blacks and knew my size.

Suchardchoccy · 10/04/2024 21:38

Idk why everyone is so obsessed with tesco... It's one of the most expensive supermarkets. And most of the "clubcard prices" are the standard price in say Asda

Dancemum83 · 10/04/2024 21:39

Driving lessons!!!!

£40 Per hour.
2hr lessons - so £80 a week

I use Dove roll on, much cheaper.

ehb102 · 10/04/2024 22:01

Terry's chocolate orange. It used to be 75p. For years it was £1, then £1 on special. Now £1.50 or £1.99 depending on your outlet. I keep using it as a reason why prices for school PTA events need to go up. Costs have doubled in the last five years.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 10/04/2024 22:05

TiredCatLady · 10/04/2024 19:26

I used to be able to spend £25/week and have enough to cook two of us fresh meals all week with a bottle of wine on top. Lucky if I can manage on £50 now. We earn ok but when a can of Heinz soup is £1.90?!? Even the own brand stuff is now 70p. Stopped shopping at Lidl and Aldi because the fresh stuff is rubbish and works out more expensive than the local grocers by the time half of it has been chucked in the bin.

Don't get me started on hairdressers etc.

£25 a week to cook fresh meals for two people? As in a weekly shop? I haven't had that low a spend since I bought my first flat in 1993, and it didn't include a bottle of wine.

When I was really skint after DD was born in 2011 I could do a measly shop for two adults for £40, but it was all absolute basics and special offers.

Agree that prices are crazy now, though. Especially hairdressers at £100+ for a cut!

Love the comment from PP about nails and 'growing their own' I do, too. I'd imagine anyone who's pinched for cash is absolutely going to cut the nails (pardon the pun) out first, when looking at their finances.

RespiceFinemKarma · 10/04/2024 22:09

Amazon clothing has been a real eye opener for me - I remember when they had a cheap range but now even their basics are £20 for a 2 pack T shirt, and they aren't great quality. T shirts used to be a few quid about 5 years ago!

RespiceFinemKarma · 10/04/2024 22:11

And seeing a chicken for £19 the other day in the supermarket. That was a real shocker for me.
