What should I drink at the pub?

Despite my username I rarely drink alcohol. When I do (maybe 6 times a year?) it will tend to be good champagne- quite likely Bollinger (but not for breakfast). As a student 25 years ago my standard drink was vodka and orange or sometimes vodka and coke. I love a posh cocktail but on the rare occasions I'm in a pub (the kind that doesn't have a cocktail menu) I never know what to order. I can't drink gin. Can't drink wine if it's not super expensive as 1. I don't enjoy it 2. I'll get a headache. Can't afford to order super expensive wine in a pub even if they had any. Recommendations please!

Bacardi and Diet Coke

Nicetobenice67 · 09/04/2024 14:33

Prosecco

NavyPeer · 09/04/2024 14:34

As a nice long drink, I really like vodka and cranberry juice with a wedge of lime.

I don’t have it often- but i find it really refreshing when i do.

If I’m out to get drunk/go clubbing= Long Island Ice Tea
Drink to enjoy= Nice gin and Fever Tree
Non-Alcohol= Lime and Soda

Devilsmommy · 09/04/2024 14:35

Whiskey all the way, with coke if that's your preferred mixer

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 09/04/2024 14:37

I like vodka preferably grey goose or similar , soda water, ice and lots of fresh lime in a tall glass. Refreshing and don't seem to get headaches, avoid cheap vodka though or will give you a hangover from hell.

Revelatio · 09/04/2024 14:38

Lime soda
Tonic water
You can add vodka to them if you wanted an alcoholic drink.
Do you like anything else like cider, beer, other spirits?

CrushingOnRubies · 09/04/2024 14:39

Brandy or run with ginger ale or ginger beer?

What's your go to cocktail ? Do you prefer fruity cosmos or more martini or negroni type things?

ATGforever · 09/04/2024 14:40

If I'm in an old man pub, I get a vodka and coke.

I also prefer cocktails and champagne. I don't like gin either. I also hate bitter horrible tonic. I don't mind prosecco but if it's too cheap, which is usually is, it's horrible. Somewhere that's a step up from an old man pub, I'll try and get a French Martini.

Thanks for the speedy answers. This thread is proving more popular than my recent bathroom related one 😂

forgot about Bacardi yum...

Also forgot to say I can't bear sweeteners. So nervous of ordering mixers as I don't want to sound like an arse interviewing the bar staff on ingredients. Diet Coke is out sorry!

I don't have mixers myself, so a decent single malt scotch is perfect if you can handle straight liquor 😜

NCForQuestions · 09/04/2024 14:44

Carry on with the good branded vodka and orange juice - perfectly normal drink!

Highly recommend Bacardi Tiki rum with orange juice. That tastes like a cocktail.

Or try some spiced rum - Kraken with ice and a small dish of coke. If you drown it as a long drink, you need to have a double shot. Only full fat coke, it tastes dreadful in diet stuff.

Bollingerforbreakfast · 09/04/2024 14:45

@ATGforever i should go drinking with you. I also love a good Prosecco but can't hear a cheap one.

old man pub is a great distinction - this is the kind of place I am stuck for what to order. If I go out in London then there will invariably be a cocktail menu or a decent wine by the glass option

Do you like beer? Most pubs now have decent alcohol free beers, if you prefer not to have alcohol, and far less sugar than mixers.

Bollingerforbreakfast · 09/04/2024 14:46

@Devilsmommy i absolutely can't handle near spirits in any way!

Tequila, soda and orange

Bollingerforbreakfast · 09/04/2024 14:47

@Rosesanddaisies1 no I've only ever been able to tolerate beer if I'm already drunk. That last happened many many years ago...

All alcohol is ethanol. There's very little difference between types except strength.

DuchessOfSausage · 09/04/2024 14:47

Smirnoff Ice or Wkd

Blanketpolicy · 09/04/2024 14:47

Double Vodka and Coke is my go to, obviously vodka will mix with anything from coke, lemonade, orange/cranberry, or any juice, ginger ale etc

Some others I have are -

Bourbon (Bulleit) and Coke
Captain Morgan's and Lemonade
Southern Comfort and Coke

Most pubs will do basic cocktails - but possibly missing the slice of orange, fancy glass etc
Melon Ball - Vodka, Orange juice, Midori (ridiculously sweet)
Vodka, cranberry/orange, peach schnapps (sex on beach)
Vodka, Cointreau, cranberry juice (Cosmopolitan)
etc

Nicetobenice67 · 09/04/2024 14:48

You can drink Bacardi with orange juice or pineapple juice

Bollingerforbreakfast · 09/04/2024 14:50

Ok Bacardi and orange or pineapple sounds like a plan.

I'm absolutely fine with sweet drinks if it's sugar btw but ideally looking for a more complex and sophisticated flavour than vodka or rum and fruit juice.

french martinis are one of my faves but not something you feel you can ask for in some venues?

It's not the ethanol I'm considering here it's the ethanol delivery system, to quote Ron Swanston. It's making it taste wonderful on the way down
