Weird shit from an 80s childhood

Reading through the retro sweets thread reminded me of some other random stuff from growing up in the early 80s.

Who else remembers the garbage pail kids? (I mean, Cabbage patch kids was bad enough!)
Now that is some seriously weird shit!

Mind you, I bet anything if you have the full set, you’ll probably be able to pay off your mortgage 😂

@CandidFruit I was just thinking of Athena posters and tennis girl. My brother had lots of car ones.

I had a giant Swatch on my wall and a poster of a soldier that said Why.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 08/04/2024 07:10

E.T. being absolutely everywhere - lunch boxes, pencil cases, disgusting-looking bright green 'E.T.' biscuits for sale in the Co-Op.

Similar for Ghostbusters a couple of years later.

Loved the garbage pail kids 😁 Anyone remember those ' slime slurp' jelly sweets. They were sealed in a mould and were usually some creature/ alien thing. They are discontinued and I looked everywhere for some. They tasted so yummy

Not read full thread, but you can get these in home bargains! I always buy a pack when I go in (and eat them all on the way home haha)

Trickymaths · 08/04/2024 07:13

Tiny little dolls that came in a matchbox.

Garbage pail kids always freaked me out a bit.

I have two little Care Bears I bought as an adult as I secretly liked them as a child but was too sensible to like fun things. I might buy a my little pony one day too!!

RichardsGear · 08/04/2024 07:13

I had a burgundy velour pedal pushers with matching bolero worn with a white blouse with a huge ruffle down the front. Wtaf - I must've looked like a cut price Little Lord Fauntleroy.

Then we all went mad for tucker boots - I had a burgundy suede pair (sensing a theme), worn with baggy trousers rolled up at bottom and a nice batwing jumper knitted by my mother.

My brother and I used to spend hours on a rainy day playing the pong tennis thing on the TV - how easily we were entertained! I was always madly jealous of my friend over the road who had a vast collection of Smurfs.

Cadburys chocolate ‘dispensers’ you put 2 p in to get a tiny chocolate.

Does anyone remember Keepers? I had Sheldon the turtle.

Keepers, Keepers, what’s inside those Keepers?

I still have Diamond the horse and her little friend Dash!

What about those weird sticky hands that you sort of slapped onto a window?! They got covered in fluff and it was completely disgusting 🤢

We had ones in the shape of an octopus, you threw them at the window and they would „walk“ down the window.

we also collected Constance Carroll lipgloss in various favours. Cola was a favourite.

Slightlylostalongtheway · 08/04/2024 07:31

Point Horror books! I loved them and keypers...I had the Swan and the cygnet my sister had the rabbit
The 80s was a crazy but awesome time

CandidFruit · 08/04/2024 07:05

Now let’s talk Athena posters! No 80s childhood/teenage bedroom was complete without one of these bad boys.
Question is, which one graced your walls?

I had this one…

DH of course had the tennis girl one.

Good grief, we are such cliches 🤣

Groan - had this one on my wall, along with ‘The kiss’ 🤦🏽‍♀️

Does anyone remember Grannys Garden? I remember using this in school as out computer lesson, we had to take it in turns and then do writing tasks about it. I still have the booklet with stars stuck on the page if you got it right!

Fashion ...Ra ra skirts, puffball skirts, jelly-bean shoes, leg-warmers, pixie boots. Crimpers for hair and the side ponytail. 😂

TV shows...Heman/Shera (?) The A-Team, Number 73, Fragile Rock, Inspector gadget. The family would sit around to watch 'Miss World'. Magnum PI😂

Ah - life in the 80s was very different.

Going live once had a Smelly Vision episode. You had to get hold of a scratch and sniff card (maybe with Smash Hits?) and they went round some old house or something, like a medieval castle(?) and directed you which bits to sniff as they went. @SmallIslander

Yes I remember this!!! I definitely remember getting a scratch and sniff card from a magazine and following live on TV. I think the magazine might have been the BBC's once popular but now long missed Fast Forward magazine (could be wrong thought)...

(I give up)

Morethanthis71 · 08/04/2024 07:43

I reminder the 'video man' coming round our house; he had a suitcase full of videos that my Dad would choose from, typically anything I wanted to watch was Beta max not VHS. He was round every Friday night.

I cleared out my parents house last year and my Mum kept EVERYTHING from 1959 onwards. I found my entire collection of Smash Hits, in pristine condition, and basically anything I had ever owned apart from my deely boppers ....

Found my rubix cube cheat book though.

I miss my deely boppers, many a time since they would have come in handy.
I miss the lovely floral notepaper I used to write on and my 'smelly' pen toppers. And White Musk from the Body Shop. Found some of that and it still smells the same. I miss fitting into clothes that were a size 12 which are nowhere near as big as the size 12 in the shops these days. And not sure how my feet have grown 2 sizes since then either. Nearly all my clothes from back in the day were 100% cotton and made in Britain, times have changed. I remember clothes being so expensive.

Most of all though, I miss wearing the colour peach. It's really hard to find peach clothes nowadays.

It was a real labour of love to rehouse and sell most of it ... I've got 6 shellsuits left though .......................

Threewheeler1 · 08/04/2024 07:46

For some reason I'm singing the Blankety Blank theme tune.
That's going to be my earworm for the day.
It was the Young Doctors the other day.
Also remember watching Miss World as a family 😮
Seems unbelievable now!
Magnum PI and his tiny shorts, fnarp 😶

Thepeppapigfanclub · 08/04/2024 07:56

Oh what about the TV show 'MiniPops' 😮

Apparently peach is the pantone colour of the year, so this should be about to get easier....

Dancing to war of the worlds in my gym knickers round and round in circles in the hall for 'PE'

Getting sent to be whacked with a ruler by the Head

A polystyrene cake and a packet of opal fruits on your birthday, handed out in assembly

Oh my goodness - yes dancing about to all the different planets!! Mars we had to be angry 🤣

a ruler?! Blimey didn’t know anyone doing that in the 80s!!! 😳

ITV also did a version of this, the card was in the TV Times. The smells weren't very exciting, e.g. mown grass.

Bowlercoaster · 08/04/2024 08:03

I loved Garbage pail kids.

And sticker albums and swapsies for stickers "got, got, got, NEED!". There was a girl in my class that completed the Neighbours sticker album and she was the playground celebrity.

I had a keypers lunch box in year 1!

I loved point horror. I’m trying to get a collection of those and goosebump books for my daughter to read now.
