Weird shit from an 80s childhood

Reading through the retro sweets thread reminded me of some other random stuff from growing up in the early 80s.

Who else remembers the garbage pail kids? (I mean, Cabbage patch kids was bad enough!)
Now that is some seriously weird shit!

Mind you, I bet anything if you have the full set, you’ll probably be able to pay off your mortgage 😂

@KitKatChunki agree with the better adverts, but it wasn’t a very good decade for naming businesses!
It was quite unoriginal shall we say… Tie Rack, Sock Shop, The Sweater Shop…😂

Did anyone else get their first duvet in the 80s? During the early 80s our beds were made with layers of itchy wool blankets with possibly a candlewick bedspread thrown on top. Your Mum would have to spend a good ten minutes tucking you in and you were virtually entombed in layers and layers of heavy fabric. Probably with a hot water bottle too if you didn't have double glazing or central heating like we didn't.

Then one day Mum produced a duvet that went inside a duvet cover. Instead of the candlewick bedspread you could have a picture of a cute animal or Roland Rat on it. It was so light and so warm! And possible to make your bed without the help of a friend. Stuff VHS players and computers, this was truly the greatest technological leap of the decade.

Edited

Yes! It was a birthday present and they put it on whilst I was at school. It was covered in blue flowers. I was so excited and it was so much better than sheets and blankets!

@Morethanthis71 I'd love to smell white musk again 😊

CandidFruit · 08/04/2024 22:52

Aah that’s a nice one @SmallIslander
Although your mention of a candlewick bedspread has just brought back a memory from 40 plus years… My mum had a pea green one, but over time it became less candlewick, and more a sheet, shall we say, as me and my partner in crime sister periodically picked out those little tufts of candlewicking and pretended they were “peas” when we were playing chip shop 😳
Our poor mum, lumbered with us two reprobates, ruining her lovely, albeit pea green bedspread 😆

Now, who remembers Fraggle Rock?
And compact discs to go in your Sony Walkman?!

@CandidFruit my first Walkman was a cassette player 🫣

Loved the Garbage Pail Kids!

Did anyone else have a Boglin?

@YesYesAllGood I was terrified of boglins. My brother and his friends used to put the on the door handles and then shut me in a room so I couldn’t get out because I was so scared!

Popple- I think mine was green and purple.

Doing PE at primary school in vest, pants, and bare feet. We were made to wear shoes without socks to walk from the classroom to the assembly hall, past the other classes, who would laugh. We did things like pretending to be the Ugly Duckling, following instructions from a posh voice in the cassette player. (I have loads of other memories of school from then.) Cool and unusual punishments: some boys who laughed when told off were then made to laugh in a mirror. Another who messed about in assembly was asked “would you like to sit in a pushchair, as you’re behaving like a baby?” Children being yanked by the arm, especially when being told off.

I read Stig of the Dump.

To me, “boglins” were collectible rubber monsters in the 90s, which in groups of “the greedies”, “the freaks”, “the rudes dudes” etc.

And another relic of the late 80s: the BBC Chronicles of Narnia, with the Beavers so obviously people in costumes. The White Witch was scary! There was also a radio version of The Magician’s Nephew.

Yes, mine too, but the 80s gave us CDs!

Another thing is Mixed Tapes 😅
Who made these for their friends and vice versa?
I bloody loved a mixed tape!

Did anyone read the ‘Indian in the cupboard’ at school? I was obsessed with it
Also remember the hymn practice singing in assembly every morning
I remember having to wake up really early for school in the dark and eating cereal, watching Batfink

ChishiyaBat · 08/04/2024 23:14

Ahh Fraggle rock, we sung the theme tune like this...
Down in Fraggle Rock, grab a Fraggle by his cock. Swing him round and round til his bollocks touch the ground😂
There was more, but I can't remember what it was!

Oh I'm glad someone else came to lower the tone before me.

Our version was:

Down at Fraggle Rock
Grab a fraggle by its cock
Swing it round your head
Now the fraggle's dead

Different times...

😬

I love it😂. You are welcome, i'm very good at lowering the tone, I blame the 80s😂.

Haha hope we didn't kill the thread. Maybe time to reminisce about the Goonies or something to get it going again 😆

SmallIslander · 08/04/2024 23:29

And yes to a walkman! Although we were a bit poor, so mine was a Sanyo or something. Eventually got my hands on a midi hifi with not one but two cassette players! Tape to tape baby! Who wants a copy of my recording off the radio of Especially for You by Kylie and Jason????

It was all those video nasties, corrupting everyone.

No one ever made me a mix tape.

ChishiyaBat · 08/04/2024 23:29

@SmallIslander One of my daughters favourite films because I brought her up right😂.

Lifesprettyweird · 08/04/2024 23:30

I used to put beer bottle tops on my shoes 🙈I remember my dad went and got specific beer bottles (beer he didn’t drink) so I could put the tops on my black, lace up shoes I think 😂

I remember Grotbags and a show about a house and a horse lived there, it was really strange but I loved it. Also Wakaday tv with annoying Timmy mallet and a Saturday morning show where the girl skated around the house on Roller blades
I remember 5 star and think it was them on a Saturday morning show when someone rang in asked ‘why are you so shit’ or something to them 😂it was very controversial at the time

Yes like killer klowns from outer space, me and brothers go to weekend video shop titles😂. No one ever made me a mix tape either, but I made loads, I think I still have some in my attic!

Fragglecide probably quite tame compared to Freddie Kruger, Predator, Running Man and Grease.

If I had known you I would have taped you a copy of Irene Cara's Fame that I got free with Weetabix vouchers.

Rentaghost? Bonkers programme.
